No—don’t bend a damaged plug prong back into shape or keep using the plug. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that bending plug blades can cause worse overheating later. Take the appliance out of service and follow its manufacturer’s repair instructions; whether a replacement plug is suitable depends on the cord and appliance.
What to do with a damaged plug prong
Unplug the appliance if you can do so safely, and stop using it until the plug or cord has been properly repaired or replaced. A broken, loose, or damaged prong is not something to patch with glue, tape, or another improvised fix. Damaged electrical parts should be repaired or replaced before use, as the CPSC’s home wiring guidance and its reseller safety guide advise.
If the blade is bent but still attached
Do not bend it back. The CPSC says, “Do not bend the blades of a plug because this usually causes worse overheating later.” Arrange an appropriate repair or replacement instead.
If a blade is broken or missing
Do not plug in the appliance. Have the cord or plug replaced only if the product’s instructions allow it and the repair preserves the required electrical ratings and grounding. Otherwise, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional.

Can you replace just the plug?
Sometimes. A cord-end replacement plug is appropriate only when the appliance and cord are designed for that repair and the replacement matches the electrical and mechanical requirements. A plug that looks right is not necessarily compatible.
For example, Leviton describes its 3W101-OR as a 15 A, 125 V, NEMA 5-15P, three-wire grounding plug for compatible tools, appliances, and extension cords. It is one product for a bounded use case, not a universal replacement. Leviton’s installation instructions specify copper wire, require wire type and size suitable for the application and load, and advise consulting an electrician if unsure.

Check compatibility before any replacement
- Match the plug pattern, number of conductors, grounding, and polarization required by the appliance.
- Check voltage and current ratings against the appliance label, manual, and cord requirements.
- Confirm the replacement accepts the cord’s type, wire gauge, and conductor material, and provides suitable strain relief.
- Follow the appliance maker’s instructions and applicable local electrical requirements.
If the cord is integrated, sealed, damaged, or its specifications are uncertain, do not assume a generic plug will work. Ask the manufacturer or use a qualified repairer. Leviton’s instructions put it plainly: “If you are not sure about any part of these instructions, consult an electrician.”
Could the wall outlet be the problem?
If a plug feels loose in the receptacle, the outlet may be worn rather than the appliance plug being defective. The CPSC advises comparing other plugs: if most also fit loosely, have a qualified electrician assess the receptacle. If only one appliance plug is loose or damaged, its cord or plug may be the issue.
