Best BLACK+DECKER Microwaves for Real Kitchens: Countertop, Over-the-Range, and Remodel Picks

For most homeowners, the best BLACK+DECKER microwave is not the biggest one or the one with the longest feature list. It is the one that fits the kitchen layout, has enough wattage for the way the household cooks, can be installed safely, and does not create a ventilation or cabinet problem later.

On our kitchen and bath projects, we usually treat BLACK+DECKER as a practical value brand. It is a strong fit for countertop microwaves, rental turnovers, secondary kitchens, basement bars, offices, ADUs, and budget-conscious over-the-range replacements. It is not usually our first recommendation for a premium built-in wall installation or drawer-style microwave where cabinetry integration and long-term serviceability matter more than appliance price.

If you want the short answer: a 1.1 cu. ft., 1000W BLACK+DECKER countertop microwave is the best all-around choice for most kitchens. A 0.7 cu. ft., 700W unit is fine for coffee, leftovers, and small spaces, but it is slow for family meal prep. A BLACK+DECKER over-the-range microwave can make sense when counter space is tight, but only after confirming cabinet width, mounting height, electrical access, and whether the unit can vent outdoors.

Best BLACK+DECKER Microwave Picks by Kitchen Use

The right microwave starts with placement. A countertop model is the simplest and least expensive. An over-the-range model saves counter space but becomes a real installation project. A built-in look requires cabinet planning, trim compatibility, airflow clearances, and a more disciplined approach to dimensions.

Here is how we would sort BLACK+DECKER choices for a typical homeowner comparing models in 2026.

Best use Recommended BLACK+DECKER type Typical size and power 2026 appliance cost range Best fit
Compact budget pick Countertop compact 0.7 cu. ft., 700W About $80-$100 Apartment, dorm-style space, office, coffee station, guest suite
Best everyday countertop pick Mid-size countertop 1.1 cu. ft., 1000W About $80-$135, often around $90 at major retailers Main kitchen, rental kitchen, ADU, family leftovers
Best small-kitchen upgrade Over-the-range microwave Roughly 1.6-1.9 cu. ft., 1000W Commonly several hundred dollars before labor 30-inch range opening where counter space is limited
Best rental turnover Countertop 0.9-1.1 cu. ft. 900W-1000W About $108-$160 for many 0.9 cu. ft. listings; 1.1 cu. ft. often lower when on sale Durable, inexpensive replacement with simple controls
Best remodel integration OTR only if layout supports it 30-inch class, 1000W, vented if possible $250-$1,200 installed for many over-range projects Kitchen remodels where cabinets, electrical, and ducting are already being touched

For a family kitchen, we usually start at 1.1 cu. ft. and 1000W. That size class is large enough for normal dinner plates and common storage containers, while still being compact enough for most countertops. BLACK+DECKER’s EM031MB11-style 1.1 cu. ft. countertop model is commonly listed with 1000W output, 10 power levels, 6 pre-programmed buttons, a child lock, a 12.4-inch turntable, and dimensions around 20.2 inches wide by 15.6 inches deep by 12.1 inches high.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those dimensions matter. A microwave that is 20 inches wide still needs usable counter on both sides, door-swing clearance, rear clearance, and a safe landing zone for hot dishes. We like to see at least 15 inches of usable counter near the microwave when the kitchen allows it. The appliance itself is only part of the workflow; the real safety issue is where a hot bowl goes when someone pulls it out.

Countertop BLACK+DECKER Microwaves: The Value Sweet Spot

Countertop models are where BLACK+DECKER makes the most sense. They are simple, inexpensive, and easy to replace. In 2026, common BLACK+DECKER countertop sizes include 0.7 cu. ft./700W compact models, 0.9 cu. ft./900W models, and 1.1 cu. ft./1000W models.

The 0.7 cu. ft. units are usually about $80-$100. They work in tight spaces, but there is a tradeoff. A 700W microwave heats more slowly and tends to be less forgiving with frozen meals, dense leftovers, and larger portions. For a single renter or office kitchenette, that is acceptable. For a household reheating family dinners, it becomes irritating quickly.

The 0.9 cu. ft. size is a middle ground. Current marketplace listings often land around $108-$160 new, with some open-box examples around $66-$71 depending on seller and condition. We use that size when space is tight but the client wants a step above the smallest compact unit.

The 1.1 cu. ft., 1000W class is usually the best value. Retail pricing commonly falls around $80-$135, and some major retailer listings have been around $90. That combination of price, size, and wattage is why it often makes more sense than saving $10 or $20 on a smaller 700W unit.

What 1000W Actually Changes

Microwave wattage is not just a marketing number. A 1000W unit generally reheats faster, handles frozen foods better, and gives more predictable results with packaged cooking instructions, which are often written around higher-wattage microwaves. A 700W compact model may need 25% to 40% more time on some foods, and the results can be uneven if the container is crowded or the food is dense.

For homeowners, our rule is simple: choose 1000W for a primary kitchen when the space and budget allow it. Choose 700W only when compact size matters more than speed.

Countertop Placement Rules

A countertop microwave still needs planning. Do not wedge a standard countertop unit into a cabinet opening unless the manufacturer specifically lists it for built-in use with the correct trim and ventilation kit. Microwaves reject heat through their casing and vents. Blocking that airflow can shorten appliance life and create a service problem.

Set the microwave on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Confirm the door opens fully without hitting a wall, tall pantry panel, or refrigerator handle. Keep the cord from crossing behind hot appliances or being pinched by the cabinet. If the receptacle is old, loose, ungrounded, or overloaded with multiple kitchen appliances, have it evaluated before the microwave becomes part of daily use.

Over-the-Range BLACK+DECKER Microwaves: Good Fit or Compromise?

BLACK+DECKER over-the-range microwaves typically fall in the roughly 1.6 to 1.9 cu. ft., 1000W range. Some related models are promoted with 400 CFM ventilation and sensor or one-touch cooking features. Appliance-only pricing is commonly several hundred dollars, but the installed cost can vary much more than the microwave price.

An over-the-range microwave solves one problem immediately: it frees counter space. But it also combines three systems into one location: appliance support, electrical supply, and range ventilation. That is why we treat OTR microwave selection as part of the kitchen plan, not just an appliance purchase.

Before specifying one, we verify the cabinet width, upper-cabinet depth, stud layout, backsplash height, range or cooktop clearance, and duct path. A standard range opening is often 30 inches wide, and many OTR microwaves are designed around that width. But the surrounding cabinet faces, filler strips, tile thickness, and uneven walls can still create installation problems.

Vented vs Recirculating

Exterior venting is better when the home layout allows it. A ducted over-the-range microwave can remove heat, moisture, cooking odors, and airborne grease from the kitchen. A recirculating setup pulls air through filters and sends it back into the room. Charcoal filters help with odor, but they are maintenance items and they do not remove moisture from the home.

For light cooking, recirculating may be acceptable. For households that sear, boil pasta often, cook with oil, or use the range daily, we push for exterior venting where feasible. The difference is noticeable, especially in tighter homes with less natural air leakage.

Duct layout matters. Shorter, straighter duct runs perform better than long runs with multiple elbows. Wall caps and roof caps must be properly flashed, sealed, and protected from backdrafts. Poor ductwork can make a 400 CFM-rated appliance perform like a much weaker system.

When a Range Hood Is Better

An OTR microwave is convenient, but it is not always the best ventilation tool. In a serious cooking kitchen, a dedicated range hood plus a countertop, drawer, or built-in microwave often performs better. The hood can be sized for the cooking equipment, mounted at the proper height, and ducted more efficiently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For accessibility projects, we are also cautious with OTR microwaves. They put hot liquids above shoulder height for many users. For aging-in-place work, a lower built-in microwave or drawer microwave may be safer, even if it costs more.

Installed Cost: Appliance Price Is Only One Line Item

Microwave projects look inexpensive until the installation conditions are exposed. A countertop replacement might be as simple as setting the appliance in place and plugging it into a suitable receptacle. An over-the-range replacement may require two installers, wall mounting, cabinet drilling, duct alignment, electrical checks, and old appliance removal.

Professional microwave installation labor commonly runs about $122-$255 nationally based on service-market averages. Other 2026 cost guides place average microwave labor around $100-$400, with standard over-the-range replacement often around $100-$300. Those figures assume a fairly straightforward job.

Full installed project ranges are wider. Countertop microwave projects can land around $100-$580 including appliance and labor. Over-the-range projects commonly range from $250-$1,200. Built-in microwave projects can run $500-$2,500. Drawer microwave projects often land around $1,260-$2,430. Combination wall oven projects can reach $2,600-$5,200 or more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Project type Typical 2026 installed range Main cost drivers
Countertop replacement About $100-$580 Appliance size, receptacle condition, delivery, removal
BLACK+DECKER 1.1 cu. ft. countertop setup Often appliance cost around $80-$135 plus minimal setup Counter space, outlet condition, shelf or cart if needed
Over-the-range replacement About $250-$1,200 Mounting, cabinet drilling, duct alignment, electrical, old unit removal
Built-in microwave About $500-$2,500 Cabinet modification, trim kit, ventilation clearance, electrical work
Drawer microwave About $1,260-$2,430 Premium appliance cost, base cabinet work, dedicated electrical planning

The largest cost drivers are not usually the microwave buttons or finish. They are the conditions around the appliance: a new dedicated circuit or receptacle, GFCI or AFCI breaker updates, cabinet modification, filler panels, wall blocking, exterior duct routing, roof or wall cap installation, old appliance disposal, tile backsplash repair, permit fees, and regional labor rates.

For a remodel, we document the circuit and breaker protection in the project file. That helps inspectors, future appliance swaps, and service calls. It is a small step, but it prevents confusion when the next homeowner or technician opens the panel years later.

Electrical, Code, and Safety Notes Homeowners Should Not Skip

Microwaves are common appliances, but they still place real demand on a kitchen electrical system. A 1000W cooking-output microwave can draw significantly more input power from the circuit than its cooking wattage suggests. If the same circuit is also serving a toaster, coffee maker, air fryer, or refrigerator, nuisance trips and overheated connections become more likely.

For over-the-range units, many manufacturers call for a dedicated grounded branch circuit. We verify the installation manual for the exact model and check local code requirements before rough-in. In kitchens, modern GFCI and AFCI requirements may apply depending on receptacle location, circuit type, adopted code cycle, and local amendments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ventilation also has code implications. Residential exhaust systems must be installed with proper materials, terminations, and clearances. Kitchen exhaust ducts should not be treated like a casual flex-hose project. If a duct penetrates the roof or exterior wall, the weatherproofing details matter as much as the appliance.

Make-up air can also enter the conversation on larger kitchen exhaust systems. Many jurisdictions use thresholds around high-capacity kitchen exhaust fans to decide when make-up air is required. A typical OTR microwave fan may not trigger that by itself, but remodels involving larger hoods should be reviewed before equipment is ordered.

Federal microwave energy rules focus mainly on standby and off-mode power, not how efficiently the unit cooks a bowl of soup. Amended standards taking effect June 22, 2026 lower standby limits, including 0.6W for microwave-only and countertop combination products and 1.0W for built-in and over-the-range combination products according to appliance standards summaries. For homeowners, that is useful background, but day-to-day performance still comes down to size, wattage, controls, ventilation, and installation quality.

When to DIY vs When to Hire a Pro

A countertop microwave is usually a reasonable DIY purchase and setup if the receptacle is grounded, the counter is stable, and the unit has proper clearance. Measure first. Confirm width, depth, height, door swing, cord reach, and turntable diameter. If the microwave will sit on a shelf, verify the shelf rating and avoid placing it above shoulder height.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hire a pro when the project involves an over-the-range microwave, new electrical work, cabinet modification, exterior ducting, tile repair, or a questionable existing outlet. OTR microwaves are heavy, awkward, and mounted over a cooking surface. A poor installation can damage cabinets, loosen over time, vent badly, or create an electrical issue.

A like-for-like OTR swap may take a professional crew about 1.5 to 3 hours when the mounting bracket, cabinet, outlet, and duct location cooperate. A new OTR installation with ducting, cabinet drilling, blocking, and electrical updates can become a half-day or full-day project. If roof work, masonry, or backsplash repair is involved, the schedule can stretch further.

Permits depend on the scope and local jurisdiction. Replacing a plug-in countertop microwave usually does not require one. Adding a new circuit, modifying kitchen wiring, cutting a new exterior vent, or changing cabinetry during a larger remodel may require permits and inspections. The safest answer is to check with the local building department before work starts, not after the wall is open.

Common Buying Mistakes We See

The first mistake is buying by exterior size only. Homeowners see a microwave that fits the counter but miss the interior capacity, dinner-plate clearance, turntable diameter, or door-swing conflict. A 12.4-inch turntable, like the one commonly listed on BLACK+DECKER’s 1.1 cu. ft. 1000W countertop model, is more useful in a family kitchen than a cramped compact cavity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The second mistake is choosing 700W for a main kitchen to save a small amount of money. That can be fine in a studio apartment, office, or guest room. In a busy kitchen, the slower heating becomes a daily annoyance.

The third mistake is assuming an over-the-range microwave is automatically a good range hood. It may be adequate for light cooking, especially if ducted outdoors, but it is still a compromise compared with a properly selected dedicated hood. If the household cooks heavily, ventilation should drive the decision.

The fourth mistake is forcing a countertop microwave into a cabinet. Unless the model is specifically listed for that use with the right trim and airflow clearances, that installation can trap heat and shorten the appliance’s life.

The fifth mistake is ignoring the landing zone. Microwaves handle hot liquids, heavy bowls, and awkward containers. A beautiful appliance location that gives the user nowhere safe to set food down is not a good kitchen detail.

Our Bottom Line

For most kitchens, the best BLACK+DECKER microwave is the 1.1 cu. ft., 1000W countertop class. It gives the best balance of price, speed, capacity, and easy replacement. It is the model type we would look at first for rental units, ADUs, break rooms, basement bars, and homeowners who want a practical microwave without turning the appliance into a construction project.

Choose a 0.7 cu. ft., 700W BLACK+DECKER only when the space is genuinely small and the use is light. Choose a 0.9 cu. ft. model when you need a compact footprint but want better performance than the smallest units. Consider a BLACK+DECKER over-the-range microwave when counter space matters and the existing opening, circuit, and vent path are already favorable.

In a remodel, do not pick the microwave in isolation. Match it to the cabinet plan, counter workflow, electrical circuit, ventilation strategy, user height, and long-term maintenance expectations. That is how a budget-friendly appliance becomes a good kitchen decision instead of a frustrating one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which BLACK+DECKER microwave is best for a family kitchen?

A 1.1 cu. ft., 1000W BLACK+DECKER countertop microwave is the best starting point for most family kitchens. It has more practical cooking power than a 700W compact unit and enough interior space for common plates and containers.

Is a 700W BLACK+DECKER microwave powerful enough?

Yes, for light use. A 700W model is fine for coffee, leftovers, office kitchens, small apartments, and dorm-style spaces. For daily family cooking or frozen meals, 1000W is usually faster and more consistent.

Can a BLACK+DECKER countertop microwave be installed inside a cabinet?

Do not install a standard countertop microwave inside a cabinet unless the model is specifically listed for built-in use with the correct trim and ventilation clearances. Blocking vents can cause overheating and shorten appliance life.

How much does it cost to install an over-the-range microwave in 2026?

A standard over-the-range microwave installation often runs about $250-$1,200 installed, depending on appliance price, electrical work, cabinet conditions, ducting, old unit removal, and local labor rates.

Does an over-the-range microwave need a dedicated circuit?

Many over-the-range microwaves require or strongly recommend a dedicated grounded branch circuit. The exact requirement depends on the model instructions and local electrical code, so it should be verified before installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a recirculating over-the-range microwave good enough?

It can be acceptable for light cooking, but exterior venting performs better. Recirculating filters help with odor, but they do not remove moisture from the home and require periodic filter replacement.
