Sometimes—but vinegar is not safe for every washing machine. Check the cleaning instructions for your exact make and model before adding it. Some manufacturers warn that repeated vinegar use can damage internal rubber parts; others describe vinegar use for specific models or cycles. If your manual advises against vinegar, use the washer cleaner and cleaning cycle it recommends instead.
Why the answer depends on your washer
Manufacturer guidance conflicts. Bosch, Whirlpool, and Maytag advise against or caution against putting vinegar inside the washer, citing possible wear or damage to rubber seals, hoses, or other components over time. Samsung’s US support guidance allows vinegar in a Sanitize cycle on applicable models, while Haier publishes a vinegar procedure for washer odors. Those instructions are not interchangeable: follow the manual for your own model and cycle.
Bosch Home Appliances says it does not recommend vinegar and identifies Bosch descaler for limescale or hard-water deposits and Bosch washing machine cleaner for greasy residues. Whirlpool and Maytag also advise against pouring vinegar into the drum. Their concern is potential damage from repeated exposure, not a claim that one use will necessarily cause immediate failure.
By contrast, Samsung’s US guidance describes vinegar use in the Sanitize cycle for applicable models, and Haier’s odor guidance describes a vinegar procedure. Use either only if your washer’s manual permits it.

How to decide what to use
- Find the exact model’s manual. Check its washer-cleaning or odor-removal instructions, including any restrictions on vinegar, bleach, or other cleaners.
- Follow the specified cycle and product. If the manual discourages vinegar, run the recommended cleaning cycle with a washer cleaner approved for your machine. Whirlpool and Maytag mention washer-cleaner tablets; Bosch recommends its washing machine cleaner for Bosch machines.
- Use vinegar only when the manual allows it. Follow the model’s cycle directions and the stated amount; do not transfer a recipe from another brand’s support page.
- Leave the washer empty when instructed. Cleaning cycles commonly have specific load requirements, so follow the manual rather than adding laundry by habit.
Brand-specific instructions are not universal recipes
Samsung: Sanitize is distinct from Self Clean
For applicable models, Samsung says up to six cups of distilled white vinegar or bleach may be added directly to the tub for a Sanitize cycle to help with odors. This is a model- and cycle-specific instruction, not permission to use vinegar in every Samsung cleaning cycle. Samsung gives separate guidance for Self Clean, Self Clean+, and Pure Cycle; check the manual and follow any third-party cleaner’s label when using one.
Haier: use its procedure only if your model permits vinegar
Haier’s washer-odor guidance describes an empty hot-water wash with a quart of distilled white vinegar, followed by a soak, a complete wash/rinse cycle, and wiping the surfaces. Treat that as Haier-specific guidance, not a general washer recipe, and confirm your own model’s manual allows it before proceeding.

Whirlpool: limited surface cleaning is different from a drum cycle
Whirlpool describes limited use of diluted vinegar on removed dispenser drawers and on exterior surfaces. Clean a removed drawer separately and rinse it; wipe exterior surfaces with the diluted solution. This does not mean vinegar should be poured into the drum. For a tub-clean cycle, Whirlpool describes washer-cleaner tablets and says to consult the washer guide before considering bleach.
Never combine vinegar and bleach
Do not mix vinegar with bleach, either in the washer or in a cleaning solution. Whirlpool warns that the combination can create toxic chlorine gas. Samsung’s model-specific reference to vinegar or bleach means one or the other where permitted—not both together.

What to do if your washer smells
Start with the manufacturer’s cleaning-cycle instructions rather than choosing vinegar by default. Clean the dispenser and door area as directed, and leave the door or lid open to dry if your manufacturer recommends it. If odor continues after the approved cleaning procedure, consult the manual’s troubleshooting guidance or the manufacturer’s support service; the cited manufacturer instructions do not establish vinegar as a universally effective disinfectant.
