Deadhead a flower by removing its faded bloom without damaging healthy leaves or unopened buds. Pinch soft stems; cut tough stems with scissors or secateurs. Whether this produces another flush depends on the plant, so leave flowers that you want to set seed, feed birds, or form decorative seedheads or fruit.
1. Remove blooms as they fade
Deadheading means removing flowers that are past their best. Check plants regularly and remove fading blooms as they appear; this is routine maintenance, not an emergency. The Royal Horticultural Society says a delay of a few days or about a week will not greatly affect flowering performance. RHS guidance on deadheading plants explains the timing and technique.
2. Choose the right cut for the stem
- Soft stem: Pinch or snap off the spent flower with your finger and thumb.
- Tough, thick, or stringy stem: Use clean scissors or secateurs to make a neat cut. A tool is useful for stems that resist pinching, but many flowers can be deadheaded by hand.
On most plants, remove the flower stalk just above the next healthy leaf, bud, or side shoot. Avoid cutting away healthy foliage when only the flower stalk is spent. The right point varies by plant; some spent stalks are cut nearer the base.
3. Keep unopened flowers on multi-flowered stems
If one stalk carries several flowers or buds, remove individual spent flowers where practical rather than cutting off the whole stalk while healthy blooms remain. Once the entire flower head has finished, cut the stalk back above a suitable lower bud, leaf, or side shoot. Follow the plant’s growth habit: perennial advice from University of New Hampshire Extension describes cutting back to a lateral bud or leaf, while the best cut on other plants may be lower.

4. Deadhead for your goal—and the plant’s response
For another flush of flowers
Removing spent blooms can reduce seed development and encourage more flowering in plants that respond to deadheading. Many annuals, including petunias, zinnias, and geraniums, often respond well, according to University of Illinois Extension. Some perennials may flower longer or produce another flush, but deadheading does not make every plant rebloom. A later flush may also have fewer or smaller flowers, as Penn State Extension’s guidance on herbaceous plants notes.
For seed, birds, or winter interest
Leave flowers in place when you want to collect seed, encourage self-seeding, provide food for birds, or keep decorative seedheads or fruit. Some plants also self-clean or do not need deadheading. The RHS advises leaving plants valued for their seeds and fruits rather than removing them automatically. For a plant-specific decision, check its growth habit and flowering pattern; a gardener’s question about lavender, hostas, bee balm, and cosmos illustrates how much the answer can vary by plant (Ask Extension, July 5, 2021).
