It also needs humid air and good ventilation. Water according to how quickly the potting mix dries—not a fixed weekly schedule—and feed monthly with half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer while the plant is actively growing.
Identify the lemon button fern
The common name is associated with Nephrolepis cordifolia ‘Duffii’. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) profiles the plant as Nephrolepis duffii and lists Nephrolepis cordifolia ‘Duffii’ as a synonym; NC State Extension lists Lemon Button Fern among the common names and cultivars of N. cordifolia. Because “button fern” can be used for different plants, check the botanical name on a nursery label. NC State Extension; RHS.

UConn describes its fronds as golden green with rounded, button-like leaflets and gives an approximate height of 12 inches. That is a profile description, not a guaranteed mature size for every plant or growing condition. UConn Home Garden Education Center.
Choose bright, filtered light
Place the fern where it receives bright indirect light or filtered light, rather than harsh direct midday sun. NC State and the RHS recommend these light conditions for indoor growing. Neither source specifies a window direction, distance from glass, or measurable light level, so use the plant’s exposure to direct sun as the practical guide. NC State Extension; RHS.

Keep the mix moist without waterlogging it
The target is evenly moist, well-drained potting medium—not soil left persistently soggy, and not a mix allowed to dry severely. NC State describes moist, well-drained conditions as preferred. The RHS recommends moderate watering with soft water during the growing season. Water when the mix needs it, and make sure excess water can escape from the container; how often that happens depends on the pot and room conditions. NC State Extension; RHS.
Use a draining pot and suitable medium
Choose a container with drainage holes and a potting medium that can hold moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. The RHS recommends peat-free multipurpose compost. It also offers an alternative mix of one part loam, two parts sharp sand, and three parts leaf mould. This is an RHS option, not a requirement that every lemon button fern use that exact recipe. RHS.

Provide humidity and airflow
NC State describes high humidity as preferred; the RHS recommends moderate to high humidity and good ventilation. UConn’s indoor-fern guidance also characterizes lemon button fern as needing high humidity. The sources do not establish a specific relative-humidity target for this cultivar, so focus on avoiding persistently dry indoor air while keeping air moving around the plant. Feed during active growth
Apply balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength once a month during the growing season, following the RHS guidance. Use the plant’s active growth—not a universal calendar date—to determine when that period applies, since the reviewed guidance does not specify one season schedule for every climate. RHS.

NC State lists division and spores as propagation methods for Nephrolepis cordifolia. For a home gardener, division is the more approachable route: separate a portion of the plant with roots and fronds attached, then pot it into suitable, draining medium.
