If the toilet bowl is rising, stop flushing and stop adding water. Prevent an overflow first; then, if the clog appears to be soft waste or toilet paper and no other fixtures are backing up, you can consider a cautious household workaround. For a stubborn blockage, use a toilet-specific auger—or call a plumber if the warning signs point beyond the toilet.
What to do first if the toilet is clogged
- Do not flush again. Repeated flushing can push the bowl closer to overflowing.
- If the water is rising, stop the incoming water. Lift the tank float to stop the refill temporarily, and turn the shutoff valve at the wall clockwise if needed. Roto-Rooter describes these steps for reducing overflow risk: Roto-Rooter’s guide to unclogging a toilet without a plunger.
- Wait for the bowl level to fall. Do not pour in a bucket of water when the bowl is already near the rim.
- Decide whether it looks like a toilet-only clog. If flushing has also caused water to back up in a sink or shower, skip home remedies and contact a plumber.
Which no-plunger method fits the situation?
There is no controlled head-to-head evidence establishing success rates for these approaches. Choose based on what may be blocking the toilet, how high the water is, and whether other fixtures are affected.
| Situation | Reasonable next step | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Likely soft waste or toilet paper; bowl level is safely low; no other fixtures are affected | Consider the cautious hot-water-and-soap workaround described below, recognizing that professional sources disagree about it. | Use very hot, not boiling, water; this is not a guaranteed fix. |
| Clog persists, but there are no signs of a wider drain problem | Use a toilet-specific auger (also called a closet auger), following its instructions. | Feed it gently to avoid scratching the porcelain. |
| A solid object may have fallen in, the toilet clogs repeatedly, or another fixture backs up | Stop DIY attempts and call a plumber. | A household workaround or consumer auger may not address the underlying obstruction. |
| Bowl is near the rim or rising | Stop flushing and prevent more water entering before attempting anything else. | Do not add water or continue testing with flushes. |
Can hot water and dish soap unclog a toilet?
Some sources suggest this as a low-effort attempt for a suspected soft clog, but it is not universally endorsed. Roto-Rooter and This Old House describe hot water and dish soap as possible methods; Oatey’s technical guidance advises against hot water and dish soap as substitutes for a plunger or auger, citing potential harm to the toilet or user. Follow the toilet and product makers’ safety guidance, and do not treat this as a proven professional fix.
If you choose to try it
- Only proceed when the bowl has enough room that adding liquid will not put it near the rim.
- Use very hot water, never boiling water. This Old House warns boiling water can crack porcelain.
- Add the water gradually, a few cups at a time, and pause briefly to see whether the level changes. Roto-Rooter describes this cautious approach, followed by soap and more hot water.
- If you see no improvement, do not keep pouring or flushing. Move to an appropriate toilet auger or call a plumber, depending on the symptoms.
How to use a toilet auger safely
For a stubborn toilet-only clog, a toilet auger (or closet auger) is a purpose-built mechanical option. Prefer it to a generic sink snake, which is not designed to protect the toilet’s trap and finish. Oatey’s auger instructions emphasize careful feeding and controlled movement: Oatey’s guide to unclogging a toilet.

- EXTENDABLE 3-FOOT TO 6-FOOT DESIGN: Adjustable length provides versatility for shallow and deep toilet clogs with maximum reach
- HYBRID OPERATION: Manual operation for toilet unclogging plus drill chuck compatibility for added power on tough clogs
- QUICK-RELEASE HANDLE: Easily switch between manual and drill operation with convenient handle storage when using drill attachment
- DUAL-LOCK COIL STORAGE: Secure coil clip prevents debris spread after use and keeps coil stored for hygienic handling
- PORCELAIN PROTECTION: Protective boot guards toilet from marring and scratching during use
- Read the auger’s instructions and position its protective sleeve against the bowl so the cable does not scrape the porcelain.
- Feed the cable carefully into the drain. Turn the handle clockwise while gently advancing it; do not force it through resistance.
- Work the cable through the trap as directed by the tool maker. This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey describes advancing through the trap as, “You’re pushing it through, pushing it through, up and over.”
- When you reach the obstruction, work the auger according to its instructions, then retract it slowly. Trethewey describes pulling back the caught obstruction: “You would suddenly pull it back through, and hopefully, you would have it at the end of the auger snake.”
- After removing the tool, check that the bowl drains normally before returning the toilet to regular use. If it remains blocked, stop rather than forcing the cable.
What not to put in a clogged toilet
- Boiling water: It can crack porcelain, according to This Old House.
- Caustic drain cleaner: Oatey advises against drain cleaners for toilet clogs. Chemical residue can also endanger someone who later works on the drain. This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey puts the limitation this way: “Chemicals rarely clear a stoppage—they only make a small hole. A full stoppage requires mechanical clearing.”
- Metal coat hangers or other forceful metal improvisations: They can scratch porcelain. A toilet-specific auger is a safer mechanical tool.
- Vinegar and baking soda as a substitute for a tool: Oatey advises against relying on this approach for clearing a toilet clog.
When to stop and call a plumber
- The clog does not clear after a cautious, appropriate attempt.
- The toilet clogs repeatedly.
- You suspect a toy, hygiene product, or other solid object was dropped into the toilet.
- Flushing the toilet causes water to back up in a sink or shower.
- The bowl keeps rising or you cannot safely prevent an overflow.
Cross-fixture backups can indicate a branch-line or main-sewer-line problem, not just a blockage in the toilet. Roto-Rooter identifies this pattern as a reason to consider a wider drain issue. A plumber can diagnose the source rather than simply pushing at the toilet trap.

When drainage is restored, remove any remaining standing water safely, return the tank float and wall shutoff valve to their normal positions if you changed them, and verify that the tank refills and the toilet drains normally. Avoid repeated test flushes if the bowl begins rising again.
