Yes, in some tested mixes—but not as a general rule. Recycled textile fibers can help concrete retain or improve particular strength measures, while other measures, such as flexural strength or workability, may fall. Whether a mix is more sustainable also depends on the fiber, how it is processed, and what the environmental comparison includes.
What does “without weakening it” mean?
Concrete strength is not a single measure. Compressive strength describes resistance to crushing; tensile strength describes resistance to pulling apart; and flexural strength measures performance when a specimen bends. A mix can match its control in one test and perform worse in another, so a claim that recycled fabric “doesn’t weaken concrete” needs to identify the property, test age, and comparison mix.

The available studies concern particular laboratory formulations and case studies. They do not establish that textile fibers are interchangeable, that a mix will suit every structural use, or that laboratory results demonstrate code approval or long-term field performance.

A 2024 mix that matched compressive strength
In a 2024 experiment, Haigh et al. tested concrete containing recycled polyester textile fibers alongside silica-fume-treated kraft fibers. The combined-fiber mix reached 44 MPa compressive strength at 28 days, matching the control in that experiment. Its reported tensile strength was 3.58 MPa, compared with 3.41 MPa for the control—about 5% higher. However, the study reported reduced flexural strength across its fibrous mixes. The result supports retaining selected properties in a designed mix, not improving every measure. Read the study in Structural Concrete.

A separate textile-waste study found a workability trade-off
A different 2024 study reported improved tensile and compressive strengths and strain resistance in its textile-waste fiber concrete, alongside reduced flowability. Its abstract also describes lower greenhouse-gas emissions than other non-polymer fibers, but does not provide a numerical result or enough detail to apply that comparison broadly. Read the study in Construction and Building Materials.
Reduced flowability matters on site because it can affect placement and handling. Strength results alone therefore do not show whether a proposed formulation is practical; its workability and any required mix adjustments also need evaluation.

Does recycled fabric make concrete more sustainable?
Using a waste material does not by itself prove an environmental benefit. Processing the fibers and the material they displace affect the result, as do transport and the life-cycle boundary used for comparison. The environmental claim must be tied to a specific formulation and assessment rather than inferred from the recycled content alone.
What one Tex-Crete case study reported
A 2025 Tex-Crete case-study assessment examined a mix with 2.5% textile fibers and 5% silica-fume-treated kraft fibers. The authors reported compressive and tensile strength comparable to conventional concrete, with cradle-to-gate carbon emissions 3.38% lower and production costs 2.56% lower for the assessed mix and case studies. Those figures describe that assessment, not all textile-fiber concrete or its full life-cycle impact. Read the Tex-Crete assessment in Applied Sciences.

- High-Strength Fiberglass: These 0.75-inch chopped fiberglass fibers offer high tensile strength, lightweight structure, and excellent resistance to corrosion, acids, and alkalis, ensuring long-term stability in harsh outdoor or industrial conditions. Designed to disperse efficiently in the concrete mix, they form a dense multi-directional network that enhances impact and seismic resistance, reduces shrinkage cracking, and improves overall concrete toughness.
- Superior Crack Control: Blended into the cement matrix, our concrete fiberglass chopped strands prevents cracks, shrinkage, and deformation while increasing density, water resistance, and anti-seepage performance. Ideal for damp or moisture-prone areas such as basements, patios, and gardens, it strengthens concrete to better withstand external forces and daily wear, ensuring long-lasting durability for floors, walls, and other concrete surfaces.
- Quick and Easy Use: Simply incorporate our fiberglass additive into your cement or mortar by first blending it with sand and cement, then adding the appropriate amount of water, and stirring thoroughly. No special tools or prior experience are required. This straightforward process saves labor and time while enhancing mortar toughness, simplifying reinforcement, and improving overall efficiency.
- Packaging Includeds: The package contains a 8-pack of concrete fiberglass reinforcement, each weighing 2.2 lb (1 kg), for a total of 17.6 lb. The fibers are 3/4 inch (approximately 19 mm) long, making them suitable for both small residential projects and large commercial construction sites. The well-balanced packaging ensures easy handling, providing a convenient and reliable reinforcement supply for contractors and builders.
- Versatile Applications: Our anti-crack concrete fiberglass works with cement mortar, gypsum, stucco, and concrete mixtures to provide reliable reinforcement for a variety of concrete projects. Ideal for moisture-prone areas such as basements, patios, and gardens, and suitable for driveways, walkways, and industrial floors. Perfect for DIY home projects or professional construction, offering long-lasting support for diverse structural applications.
Why durability needs separate evidence
Initial strength does not establish how a material will perform as it ages. A 2024 study tested cement-based matrices reinforced with recycled aramid nonwoven fabric from end-of-life protective clothing under accelerated aging. After wet-dry aging, the authors reported average reductions of 40% in post-cracking toughness and 11% in strength. These results apply to that material and test protocol; they are not a forecast of service life and should not be transferred to polyester or other fibers. - Specification:240g 39" X 5Y Carbon Fiber Cloth.
- Product:the fabric is soft, carbon cloth fabric features flexibility of the finished cloth, light and strong, and its construction is difficult to bulge; This carbon fiber fabric is a Plain Weave fabric, with vertical and horizontal bidirectional strength, uniform force, will not bend easily and simple to cut.
- Application: carbon fiber sheets can be widely applied in many fields, such as wrapping complex shaped structures, reinforcing concrete walls, basements, boat structures, or simply as stronger alternatives to fiberglass.
- Features:Use with Epoxy Resin, Carbon fiber fabric can be used for obtaining a beautiful look for car hoods, dashboards, modeling, aircrafts and more. Apply epoxy resin to add a glossy clear coat on top of it.
- Tip: We often fold pre cut materials in the production process, folding does not damage the glass fiber. Glass fiber is very flexible, very tough!!! Anyone with experience will agree that this allows us to maintain competitive market prices while maintaining high quality product quality.
- Fiber details: material type, source, dimensions, preparation, and recycling process.
- Separate strength results: compressive, tensile, and flexural values, with test age and control mix identified.
- Fresh-concrete behavior: workability or flowability and any mix-design changes needed for placement.
- Durability evidence: the aging method, exposure conditions, and property measured.
- Environmental comparison: life-cycle boundary, functional unit, transport and processing assumptions, and what material or reinforcement the fiber replaces.
- Evidence stage: whether findings come from laboratory specimens, a pilot element, or an in-service structure.
These details matter because the cited work covers different fibers, recipes, tests, and comparison boundaries. A result for one combination cannot establish how another will perform.
