You can use a window, but cannot mount an AC in it
A portable refrigerant AC may suit this situation, provided its exhaust hose can reach an outdoor opening and the supplied window kit fits. The hose is part of the cooling system’s heat-rejection path, not an optional accessory. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact unit and opening: DOE describes adjustable window brackets, but that does not establish that every model supports a wall, door, or custom installation.
There is no suitable opening, but permanent installation is allowed
A ductless mini-split is the relevant room-cooling option to investigate. It has an indoor unit and an outdoor compressor connected by refrigerant pipes, so it avoids a portable AC’s window exhaust setup but requires installed equipment. Seek qualified local installation guidance before choosing a system or making building changes.

Regulatory note for U.S. shoppers
DOE’s portable-air-conditioner page lists a proposed determination notice published May 16, 2025, that would withdraw the agency’s prior determination that portable ACs qualify as covered products under EPCA. The same page lists a standards final rule published January 10, 2020, with compliance required beginning January 10, 2025, and a test-procedure final rule published May 15, 2023.
