For a sunny wall or arch, consider a climbing rose; for a spacious sunny border, a peony; for a sunny, well-drained edge, lavender; and for a shaded wall, climbing hydrangea. Check those conditions before choosing plants, because none of these options suits every garden.
Start with your garden’s conditions
Before buying plants, note how many hours of sun each area receives, whether water drains freely, how much border space is available, and whether a wall faces north, east or another direction. Also allow for each plant’s mature size and any structure it will need. These practical details determine whether a romantic planting will thrive more reliably than appearance alone.
The growing advice below comes from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and is UK-oriented. If you garden elsewhere, check local hardiness, planting windows and cultivar suitability with a regional horticultural authority or nursery.
Which plants suit a romantic garden?
| Plant | Best role | Light and soil | Space or support | Season and care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Climbing rose | Fragrant vertical feature | Sun or light shade; fertile, well-drained soil | Wall, fence, pergola, arch or, for less vigorous types, obelisk | Many repeat-flower from early summer into autumn; water generously in summer and choose pruning by rose type |
| Herbaceous or intersectional peony | Large-flowered border focal point | Full sun; fertile soil improved with compost | Allow about one square metre per plant | Give it room and avoid competition; flowering time varies by local conditions |
| Lavender | Fragrant border edge or container | Sunny, freely draining site | Border edge or a suitable container | Fragrant summer flowers; prune without cutting into old wood; hardiness varies by type |
| Climbing hydrangea | White-flowering vertical feature for shade | Sun or shade; avoid excessively wet or chalky soil | Sturdy support while establishing; allow for a heavy mature plant | White summer flowers grow on last year’s growth; prune after flowering |
Choose a climbing rose for a sunny vertical feature
Climbing roses bring height and can cover walls and fences or grow over pergolas and arches. Many are fragrant, and many repeat-flower from early summer into autumn, but fragrance and repeat flowering are not guaranteed for every cultivar. Less vigorous varieties can be trained on an obelisks or similar support. See the RHS guide to climbing roses when comparing options.

Give a rose fertile, free-draining soil in sun or light shade. The RHS general rose guidance recommends at least four hours of sun daily and around 60 cm spacing; these are RHS recommendations, not universal guarantees for every rose or site. Avoid waterlogged ground and very dry, poor soil. A wall can cast a rain shadow, leaving the soil dry and potentially affecting later flowers, so check moisture near the base and water generously in summer. Newly planted roses need regular watering as they establish. Planting time depends on whether a rose is bare-root or container-grown; avoid frozen or waterlogged ground and drought conditions. The RHS rose-growing guide covers general siting and planting, while its rose pruning guide explains why pruning should be matched to rose type.
Give peonies room to be border focal points
Herbaceous and intersectional peonies suit a spacious, sunny border, where their large, sumptuous blooms can serve as focal points. The RHS recommends full sun and fertile soil improved with compost. Large plants need about one square metre each without competition, so they are a poor fit for a narrow strip or crowded planting. The RHS guide to herbaceous and intersectional peonies provides growing advice; local flowering dates are not fixed by that guidance.

Use lavender where sun and drainage are right
Lavender adds aromatic foliage and fragrant summer flowers, making it a natural choice for a sunny border edge or a suitable container. It needs free-draining soil: heavy clay and waterlogged ground are poor matches. Prune without cutting into old wood, and remember that hardiness and longevity differ among lavender types. The RHS overview of lavender and its profile of pink English lavender, Lavandula ‘Rosea’ offer more specific guidance.
Choose climbing hydrangea for a shaded wall
For a wall or fence that is too shaded for a sun-loving focal plant, climbing hydrangea is an option: the RHS says it grows in sun or shade and suits east- and north-facing walls and fences. It produces white flowers in summer on growth from the previous year. Support the plant while it establishes; mature plants become heavy. When planting against a wall, allow roughly 45 cm clearance, as recommended by the RHS. Prune after flowering in summer; pruning later can remove the wood that would flower the following year. Avoid excessively wet or chalky soil. See the RHS climbing hydrangea guide for growing and pruning details.

Build a layered planting without promising continuous blooms
Combine roles rather than trying to make every plant do the same job: use a rose or climbing hydrangea to add height, peonies as border focal points, and lavender as a fragrant edge where drainage allows. Aiming for flowers at different points in the season can create a changing display, but these plants do not guarantee continuous bloom in every climate or cultivar combination. Match varieties and planting times to local conditions, and leave enough room for mature spread and airflow.
