This guide compares the two constructions and shows what to verify before buying.
Solid or multiwall: which construction fits your project?
Polycarbonate sheet is not one interchangeable product category. Manufacturers offer distinct solid and multiwall ranges, and the intended application and product instructions should guide the choice. Exolon lists its solid products separately from its multiwall variants in its solid-sheet product finder and multiwall product finder.

Multiwall geometry can be relevant when considering a panel system’s insulation-related design, but this alone does not establish the thermal performance of a particular sheet or assembly. Use the product’s documented properties and the project design rather than assuming that all multiwall panels perform alike. How should you check UV protection and orientation?
Outdoor UV protection is specific to the sheet. Some multiwall products protect one surface; others may protect both. Check the product documentation and markings to identify the protected face before installation. The Plast-X guide instructs installers to face the UV-protected surface up or toward the sun. Follow the directions for the exact sheet you buy rather than transferring an orientation rule from one product to another.

Which specifications should you compare before buying?
Compare like with like: the same construction, thickness, color and product range. Published values are product specifications, not universal properties of every polycarbonate sheet.

- Construction and geometry: Confirm whether the panel is solid or multiwall, and record its thickness and, for multiwall, wall arrangement.
- Dimensions and support: Check available sheet size and the manufacturer’s requirements for support and project design. Do not infer a suitable span from thickness alone.
- Color and light transmission: Compare figures only for the exact color and thickness under consideration.
- UV protection: Confirm whether protection is on one or both sides and how the protected face is marked and oriented.
- Installation system: Verify compatible profiles, edge treatment and installation instructions for that product. Do not assume a profile from another system will fit.
- Written warranty: Read the terms and exclusions for the exact product and applicable region; warranty length and coverage should not be generalized across brands.
What do the published figures mean for a specific 25 mm sheet?
Gutta Werke’s product page for its 25 mm polycarbonate multiwall sheet lists approximately 58% light transmission for clear and approximately 49% for white-opal. For that same cited product, it states temperature resistance of −40 to +120 °C and linear thermal expansion of 0.065 mm/m °C. These are manufacturer specifications for that particular product, not generic values for polycarbonate sheets; Gutta notes that specifications may change. Check the current 25 mm product page and documentation before relying on the figures.

- Define the application and whether a solid or multiwall construction is appropriate to investigate.
- Check the project’s support and exposure conditions against the exact product documentation; use qualified design for structural or overhead applications.
- Compare thickness, dimensions, color and performance data for the specific sheet rather than comparing unlike products.
- Confirm the UV-protected side, correct orientation, compatible installation components and written warranty before purchase.
