For a shower caddy, choose a bath-specific adhesive caddy system rather than a generic roll of double-sided mounting tape. 3M says its Command Bath Shower Caddy (BATH11) uses water-resistant strips, supports up to 6.5 lb, and is intended for several listed surfaces. Those are manufacturer claims for this modelโnot a universal rating for tape or every shower wall. If you already own an over-shower caddy, 3Mโs Command Bath Shower Caddy Hanger (BATH19) is a purpose-built alternative, subject to its fit and surface guidance.
Why ordinary double-sided tape is a risky shower-caddy fix
A shower exposes an adhesive to repeated moisture, and a loaded caddy puts continuing force on its wall attachment. A tape listing that mentions tile or glass does not, by itself, show that the tape is designed for direct, repeated shower exposure or for carrying a wet caddy.
For example, 3Mโs Scotch-Mount catalogue includes general-purpose products and an indoor tape entry that lists tile and glass. The catalogue does not establish shower suitability for those tapes. 3Mโs U.S. product page describes the BATH11 as a shower caddy supplied with water-resistant adhesive strips. 3M states that it holds up to 6.5 lb of bathroom necessities and lists glass, mirror, tile, fiberglass, wood, and painted surfaces. These are product-specific manufacturer claims; they do not establish that every finish, textured tile, grout line, damaged surface, or load is suitable. 3M also describes the system as removable without holes or sticky residue. Its โHolds Strongly, Removes Cleanlyโ wording is a branded product claim, not independent comparative test evidence. If damage-free removal matters, follow the productโs removal instructions rather than prying the mounting bases off the wall.
Installation timing matters
The BATH11 instruction sheet gives a specific sequence: โUse shower once and wait 24 hours to allow adhesive to build. Then slide caddy back onto the mounting bases.โ Follow the instructions for the exact product you buy; do not apply this timing rule to unrelated tapes or adhesive systems. Rather than attaching a generic tape roll to an existing basket, consider the BATH19 hanger. 3M describes it as using water-resistant strips to place most over-shower caddies on listed surfaces, including glass, mirror, tile, fiberglass, wood, and painted surfaces. โMostโ does not mean every caddy: check the hangerโs instructions, the shape of your caddy, and the load it will carry. - Identify the product. A bath-specific caddy strip, a dedicated caddy hanger, and general-purpose mounting tape are not interchangeable.
- Check the exact wall finish. Match it to the productโs listed surfaces; do not assume that a broad term such as โtileโ covers every texture, grout placement, or damaged area.
- Check the real load and fit. Include the caddy and its contents, and use only a capacity stated for the exact product. The BATH11 figure should not be transferred to another model.
- Follow the installation and removal directions. For BATH11, observe the shower-use and 24-hour wait sequence in its instruction sheet.
- Do not treat a generic tape label as proof. If the maker does not establish repeated shower exposure and suitability for the intended load, its use for a shower caddy remains unverified.
What about epoxy or drilling?
People discussing ways to hang a basket on shower tile sometimes suggest adhesive caddies, hooks, epoxy-mounted hardware, or drilling. These are options people mention, not proof that a particular installation will hold. Drilling may be appropriate when a mechanically fastened installation is needed, but it can damage tile or create a water-intrusion risk if penetrations are not properly planned and sealed. Choose a fixing method based on the wall assembly and hardware instructions; for uncertain tile or waterproofing conditions, consult a qualified installer.

What the available evidence doesโand does notโshow
The cited evidence supports comparing named 3M bath products with 3Mโs general mounting-tape catalogue. It does not provide an independent head-to-head test of generic tapes for shower-caddy use. So there is no evidence-based basis here to call a generic double-sided tape the objectively best shower option, or to promise that any adhesive will work on every surface or with every load.
