The company was not abandoning its traditional bladed Swiss Army Knives, either. Here’s what the announcement established—and what remains unknown.
What Victorinox said about blade-free pocket tools
In a May 7, 2024 report by Melvin Backman for Quartz, republished by Gizmodo, a Victorinox spokesperson told CNN: “We are in the early stages of developing pocket tools without blades.” The wording describes an early-stage project, not a confirmed product release. The report provided no final design, tool list, launch date, or current availability information. Read the May 2024 report.
The concept was framed as a way to serve customers in England and some Asian markets where carrying knives was less welcome. The report mentioned possible British legislation as context; it did not establish that a particular law change caused the development decision, nor does it provide legal guidance for carrying a knife in any location.
Will Victorinox stop making bladed Swiss Army Knives?
No. The 2024 report expressly said Victorinox would not discontinue its bladed version. Its proposed direction was an additional kind of pocket tool, not a replacement for the established knife family.

How a blade-free tool compares with a traditional Swiss Army Knife

Backman’s 2024 account traces the knife’s roots to 1880s Germany, says Karl Elsener moved production into Switzerland, and reports that Victorinox and Wenger merged in 2005. It also says Victorinox made its 500 millionth Swiss Army Knife in 2017. These are historical details as presented in that report.

The same article described the Swiss Champ XXL as a $395 model with 73 features, including a fish scaler, tweezers, and wood saw. That is a 2024 article detail, not a current price, inventory claim, or description of the proposed blade-free tool.
