Choose by the siding’s finish and the joint you are sealing: Sherwin-Williams recommends acrylic latex caulk matched to the stain for cracks in stained cedar, but advises against caulking siding overlaps because doing so can trap moisture behind paint. Before buying, confirm that the siding and finish manufacturers allow the product for your specific repair.
Start with the repair location
Cracks in the cedar
For cracks in stained cedar, Sherwin-Williams recommends acrylic latex caulk matched to the stain. That guidance is specific to the finish and repair described; it does not establish that acrylic latex is suitable for every cedar coating or joint. Check the stain and siding manufacturers’ instructions before applying a product. Sherwin-Williams’ exterior product-selection FAQ
Siding overlaps
Do not caulk where cedar siding overlaps unless the siding manufacturer directs you to. Sherwin-Williams warns that caulking an overlap can trap moisture behind paint and contribute to peeling. Its guidance also notes that moisture needs a way to escape, including through gable, roof, and eave vents. A visible gap at an overlap is not, by itself, a reason to seal it.
Trim and other exterior joints
A crack in a board, a joint at trim, and an overlap between siding courses serve different purposes. Use a sealant only where the siding instructions or project specification call for one; do not assume a product marketed for siding should be applied to every seam. If a specification names an exterior joint-sealant standard, verify that the exact product meets it.

Choose the sequence for the cedar stain
For stained cedar cracks, Sherwin-Williams gives different application sequences depending on the stain type. Follow the relevant sequence, and confirm compatibility with the specific stain and caulk before starting:
- Semi-transparent stain: Stain first, then caulk. Sherwin-Williams cautions that semi-transparent stain does not cover caulk well.
- Solid-color stain: Caulk first, then stain.
Sherwin-Williams suggests matching the acrylic latex caulk to the stain; its answer also says clear caulk can work. Do not assume that paintable means stainable: confirm the product’s technical information for the coating you plan to use.

Product examples to compare
These are manufacturer-described options, not independently ranked winners. Product suitability depends on the joint, finish, siding instructions, and current label.
| Product | Manufacturer-described features | Application details to check |
|---|---|---|
| DAP DYNAFLEX 230 | DAP describes it as paintable and suitable for windows, doors, siding, and trim; cedar tan is listed as a color. | DAP says to remove old caulk, clean the area, and ensure the surface is clean and dry. Tool the bead before it skins over, approximately 2–5 minutes after application. Verify compatibility with the intended stain or coating. DAP product information |
| DAP DYNAFLEX 800 | DAP describes it as an exterior elastomeric sealant for siding, windows, and doors; cedar is listed as a color. DAP says it meets ASTM C920 Class 25. | DAP lists a surface-temperature application range of 0°F–120°F. For gaps deeper than 1/2 inch, it instructs users to install foam backer rod. Check the current label and technical sheet for the job’s conditions and dimensions. DAP product information |
| DAP DYNAFLEX 920 | DAP describes it for exterior joint sealing, including siding and window use, and says it meets ASTM C920 Class 25. It is paintable after cure. | Consider it when the joint specification or project calls for the stated standard; that specification alone does not make it a cedar-specific recommendation. Confirm coating compatibility and application requirements in DAP’s current product information. DAP product information |
Check the label before applying
Even when a product appears suitable for exterior siding, its current label and technical sheet—not a general product description—should govern the specific job. Confirm:
Rank #3
- Interior/exterior use
- 35 year limited warranty
- Water clean-up
- Energy efficient
- Made in the USA
- Whether the product is approved for the joint material and location, and whether the cedar siding manufacturer permits sealing there.
- Whether it is compatible with the existing or planned stain, paint, or other finish. Paintability alone does not establish stain compatibility.
- Color against the actual cedar and finish; a listed “cedar” shade may not match your wood.
- Surface preparation, temperature limits, joint dimensions, cure time, and when the product can be painted or coated.
- Whether a backer rod is required for the gap depth. For DYNAFLEX 800, DAP specifies foam backer rod for gaps deeper than 1/2 inch.
Prepare and apply the repair
- Identify the joint. Distinguish a crack or specified trim joint from a siding overlap. Do not seal an overlap by default.
- Identify the finish. Determine whether the cedar is bare, painted, or stained, and whether the stain is semi-transparent or solid-color.
- Choose a compatible product and sequence. Follow the siding and finish makers’ directions; for stained cracks, use Sherwin-Williams’ finish-specific sequence above as guidance rather than a universal rule.
- Prepare the surface. For DYNAFLEX 230, DAP directs users to remove old caulk and leave the area clean and dry. Follow the chosen product’s current preparation instructions.
- Respect joint depth and application conditions. For DYNAFLEX 800, DAP calls for foam backer rod in gaps deeper than 1/2 inch and gives an application surface-temperature range of 0°F–120°F. Check the current label for all other limits.
- Apply and finish the bead as directed. For DYNAFLEX 230, DAP says to tool before the bead skins over, approximately 2–5 minutes after application. Do not transfer one product’s timing or instructions to another sealant.
How to make the final choice
For a crack in stained cedar, begin with the stain manufacturer’s compatibility guidance and the appropriate stain-first or caulk-first sequence. DYNAFLEX 230 is one manufacturer-described paintable option for siding and trim, but its paintability and cedar-tan color do not prove compatibility with every stain. For an exterior joint where the project calls for an elastomeric siding sealant or a stated joint-sealant standard, compare DYNAFLEX 800 or 920 against that exact specification and the current product sheet. For a siding overlap, the default is not to caulk it; follow the siding maker’s instructions if they differ.
