An automatic rice cooker with a timer can have rice ready at a chosen time, but the timer may schedule when cooking finishes rather than when it starts—and it may not work with every menu. Zojirushi’s Micom NS-TSC10A/18A family is one documented example: its two-setting delay timer schedules a finish time, while Quick, Mixed, and Steam menus are excluded. Check the timer’s operation and menu limits in the exact model’s manual before buying.
What an automatic rice cooker timer actually does
“Timer” does not always mean “start cooking at this time.” In the Zojirushi NS-TSC10A/18A operating instructions, the delay timer sets the cooker to finish cooking by a specific time. The clock must be accurate for the scheduled finish time to be accurate.
That distinction matters when planning a meal: choose the time you want the rice to be ready, rather than assuming you can select a delayed start. The NS-TSC10A/18A family has two delay-timer settings, but the instructions do not describe this as a universal start-time control.
Timer features to compare before choosing a cooker
- What the timer schedules: Confirm whether it schedules a finish time, a start time, or both.
- How many settings it offers: The documented NS-TSC10A/18A models list a two-setting delay timer. Do not assume other cookers offer the same controls.
- Which menus support it: A timer may be unavailable for particular cooking modes. Check the manual for each menu you expect to use.
- Maximum scheduling window: Zojirushi’s FAQ says 12 hours is the maximum for most of its rice cookers, but directs owners to the specific manual for the accurate recommended maximum. That is manufacturer guidance for its products, not a rule for all rice cookers.
- Capacity and cup definition: Compare the manufacturer’s stated capacity and the size of its measuring cup; rice-cup measures are not necessarily standard kitchen cups.
- Everyday convenience: Keep-warm, reheating, and removable parts affect routine use as much as the timer does.
A documented timer-equipped example: Zojirushi NS-TSC10A and NS-TSC18A
Zojirushi lists the Micom Rice Cooker & Warmer NS-TSC10A/18A family with two delay-timer settings, multiple cooking menus, keep-warm functions, reheating, and a detachable inner lid. These are manufacturer-listed features, not the result of an independent comparison or hands-on test.

Zojirushi defines its rice cup as approximately 180 mL and bases the stated capacities on raw short-grain white rice; capacity can vary for other grains. The listed menus include white/sushi rice, mixed rice, quick cooking, long-grain white rice, steel-cut oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, and steaming. The timer is not available for Quick, Mixed, or Steam settings, according to the NS-TSC10A/18A operating instructions.
The manufacturer also lists a rice measuring cup, spatula, spatula holder, and steam basket among the included accessories. These are listed as included items, not separate required purchases.

How to decide whether this kind of cooker fits your routine
Choose capacity for the grain you cook
Use the maker’s rice-cup definition and capacity basis when comparing sizes. The NS-TSC10A is the smaller stated capacity; the NS-TSC18A is the larger one. Because the figures are based on raw short-grain white rice, they should not be treated as an exact cooked yield for every grain or recipe.
Match the timer to the meal you want scheduled
If you need a particular menu to be ready at a particular time, verify both that the cooker schedules a finish time and that the chosen menu permits timer operation. On the NS-TSC10A/18A, Quick, Mixed, and Steam are not timer-compatible, so a household relying on one of those settings should not assume the delay timer will cover it.

Weigh convenience features against the controls you need
Keep-warm and reheating can help after cooking, while a detachable, washable inner lid is a concrete cleaning feature to compare. These conveniences do not change the timer’s menu restrictions, so assess them separately.
