The best anti-tip bracket is one that is designed for the furniture or TV you need to secure, can be fastened correctly to both the item and the wall, and has clear instructions. There is no universal kit that fits every piece. Check whether the furniture came with its own restraint, follow the product-specific instructions, and check current recalls before installing.
What anti-tip brackets do—and what to look for
“Anti-tip brackets,” “furniture restraints,” “tethering kits,” and “anchoring kits” are related terms for devices that connect furniture or a TV to a wall to reduce the risk of a tip-over. They are a safety measure, not a guarantee that furniture cannot tip.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends anchoring top-heavy furniture and TVs. Existing furniture can be secured with anti-tip brackets, and new furniture may include a device. How to choose a suitable kit
Do not choose on the product name alone. Compare the restraint with the specific furniture or TV and the wall where it will be installed. Anchor It! recommends searching by both the device and what it will secure, for example, “furniture anti-tip kit” or “tv anti-tip kit.” Flat-screen TVs and older, deeper TVs can require different approaches, so a furniture strap should not be assumed to suit every object. - Recall status: Search for recalls and warnings for the exact kit before use; a familiar product category is not proof that an individual product is safe.
How installation depends on the furniture and wall
Follow the instructions from both the furniture maker and the restraint-kit maker. The right attachment location and hardware vary with the furniture’s construction and the wall. For example, Ethan Allen’s guidance places the wall bracket at a stud using suitable hardware, and the furniture bracket where its screws reach solid wood, then connects the brackets with the strap. CPSC staff describes common tether installation as involving a stud finder, drill, and screwdriver. Those tools may be needed, but the kit’s instructions determine the actual tools and hardware for your installation. [CPSC staff tip-over report]

- Identify the item and kit. Confirm the kit is intended for your furniture or TV and read its instructions before drilling or fastening anything.
- Locate the specified attachment points. Follow the instructions for finding a suitable wall attachment and a furniture attachment that can hold the prescribed fastener.
- Use the specified hardware. Do not assume a supplied screw or anchor is suitable for every wall or furniture material; use the hardware and method specified for your installation.
- Connect and check the restraint. Attach the strap or tether as directed, then verify each connection against the kit instructions.
Recall checks matter
On March 26, 2026, CPSC recalled 4our Kiddies plastic tip-restraint kits made with plastic brackets and a plastic cable tie. The agency said the plastic could break or degrade and the restraints failed the industry standard. CPSC reported at least 150 incidents in which consumers said the kits broke, including three reported tip-over incidents. The notice instructed consumers to stop using those recalled kits and seek the free replacement restraint described there. Check CPSC recall information for the exact product name and model before installation, and again if you learn of a safety notice. Do not keep using a kit identified in a recall; follow the remedy in the notice. [CPSC recalls]

Other steps that reduce tip-over risk
Anchoring is one part of a safer room setup. CPSC advises keeping tempting objects off furniture and placing heavier items lower. If a TV cannot be anchored, CPSC’s fallback advice is to put it on a sturdy, low base and push it as far back as possible; that advice is specific to TVs and is not a substitute recommendation for leaving an unanchored dresser in use. The scale of the hazard is reflected in several figures, which describe different populations and periods and should not be treated as directly comparable. CPSC reported 581 furniture, TV, or appliance tip-over fatalities since 2000, of which 472 involved children, in a 2022 release. [CPSC 2022 release] Anchor It! reported an estimated 11,300 children treated in hospital emergency rooms yearly for furniture, TV, and appliance tip-overs between 2017 and 2019, based on CPSC data.
