For a cordless angle grinder, choose by wheel size and mount first, then check whether it fits your battery platform, controls, and intended material. Bosch’s GWX18V-13CN and Makita’s XAG26Z are manufacturer-documented 18V X-LOCK options, while Makita’s XAG04Z, XAG11Z, and XAG20Z offer other wheel and control combinations. The cited manufacturer pages are US listings; their specifications are not comparative test results.

Models to compare

Model Wheel and mount Speed and weight Controls and stated features Purchase details
Bosch GWX18V-13CN 5–6-inch wheels; X-LOCK 9,000 no-load RPM; 5.1 lb Slide switch; BITURBO Brushless technology, KickBack Control, Electronic Clutch Control, restart protection, X-Brake, vibration-control auxiliary handle Bare tool. Bosch says X-LOCK wheels click into place and release with a lever; its claim of changes up to five times faster is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent test. Bosch product details
Makita XAG26Z 5-inch wheel; X-LOCK accessories only 8,500 no-load RPM; 5.99 lb net weight with battery Paddle switch; AFT, electric brake, bind-up control Battery and charger sold separately. Makita lists grinding and cut-off wheels, guards, and a side handle as included. Makita product details

How to choose the right grinder

Start with wheel size and mounting interface

Match the grinder to the diameter and mount of the discs you intend to use. A 5-inch wheel is not interchangeable with a 4-1/2-inch wheel simply because both are angle-grinder accessories. X-LOCK is a specific mounting system, not a universal interface: Makita explicitly limits the XAG26Z to X-LOCK accessories. Confirm the wheel, guard, and tool are approved for one another before use.

Factor in your battery platform and kit contents

If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, a bare tool may be practical; otherwise, include the cost of those items when comparing purchases. Bosch identifies the GWX18V-13CN as a bare tool, and Makita says the XAG26Z’s battery and charger are sold separately. Verify what comes in the exact retailer configuration, since model suffixes and kit contents can differ.

Choose controls for the task

The listed models differ in switch style and speed control. Bosch’s GWX18V-13CN has a slide switch; Makita’s XAG26Z and XAG11Z have paddle switches, and the XAG20Z adds a variable-speed dial. The XAG04Z and XAG11Z list Automatic Speed Change. These distinctions may help narrow a choice, but the specifications alone do not establish which grinder removes material faster or feels better in hand.

DEWALT 20V MAX* Angle Grinder Tool Cordless Brushless, 4 1/2 Inch, with Paddle Switch and Kickback Brake, Tool Only (DCG413B)
  • Brushless motor of the angle grinder requires no brush changes.
  • DEWALT grinder's brake stops wheel in 2 seconds or less on average
  • Kickback Brake engages when a pinch, stall, or bind-up event is sensed and the electronic brake engages with maximum force to quickly stop the wheel, reduce the movement of the metal grinder and shut the grinder off.
  • Features E-Switch Protection - When the ON/OFF trigger switch has a no-volt release function. In the event of a power outage or other unexpected shut down, the trigger switch will need to be cycled (turned off and then on) to restart tool.
  • Two stage trigger requires two actions to activate tool.

Match the model and wheel to the material

Makita describes the XAG04Z for grinding, cutting, and sanding materials such as tile, concrete, pipe, and conduit. That is an application description, not permission to use any wheel on any material: select an accessory rated for the task and material, and follow the tool manual for allowed accessories, guards, and operation.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you

“18V” identifies a battery platform, not a measure of grinding capacity. Bosch lists 9,000 no-load RPM and a 5–6-inch wheel range for the GWX18V-13CN; Makita lists 8,500 RPM and a 5-inch wheel for the XAG26Z. No-load speed figures do not establish performance under load, runtime, or job speed, and RPM alone is not a sound basis for ranking these tools.

Safety-related features also vary. Bosch lists KickBack Control, Electronic Clutch Control, restart protection, and X-Brake for the GWX18V-13CN; Makita lists AFT, electric braking, and bind-up control for the XAG26Z. These are manufacturer-stated features, not guarantees against injury. Use the correct guard and accessories, inspect them before use, and follow the manual and safe operating practices.

Makita XAG25Z status
