Before buying, measure the appliance location and door clearance, then verify plumbing, drainage, power, rental permissions, and the exact model’s capacity and efficiency information.
Which apartment dishwasher format fits your kitchen?
“Apartment dishwasher” describes several formats with different space and installation demands. The right choice is the one that fits both the available footprint and the way your kitchen can supply and drain water.

Whirlpool describes compact built-ins as typically 18 inches wide, but that label does not establish that a particular unit will fit your opening. Compare the machine’s full dimensions and installation instructions with your kitchen, not just its category name. What should you measure before buying?
Measure the real space in three dimensions and account for how the appliance will be used. A machine that fits its parking spot can still obstruct a narrow kitchen when its door is open.

- Width, depth, and height: Measure the cabinet opening for a built-in or the counter footprint for a countertop unit. Include any clearance required by the manufacturer.
- Door and working clearance: Measure the space in front of the appliance with its door open, leaving room for someone to load and unload. This is especially important in galley kitchens and tight walkways.
- Portable storage: For a wheeled model, identify where it will stand while operating and where it can be stored when not in use.
- Capacity: Match place settings to the household’s actual dish load. A smaller machine may mean more frequent cycles; capacity alone does not tell you how much water or energy your household will use overall.
What hookups and permissions are required?
Built-in compact
A built-in needs a compatible opening along with water supply, drainage, and electrical access. Because installation can involve plumbing or electrical work, renters should review the lease and obtain any required landlord approval before making changes.
Floor-standing portable
A portable model uses a faucet connection while running, so confirm that the selected unit’s connector works with your faucet and that its hose can reach the sink without creating an unsafe obstruction. Plan for the floor footprint and storage location as well as the connection.

Countertop compact
Countertop models commonly connect to a faucet and drain into the sink, but the precise arrangement depends on the model. Check the instructions for faucet compatibility, hose routing, and clearance around the machine. The GE Profile PZF560HGWBB product page, for example, describes a countertop installation that attaches to a faucet and drains into the sink.
How do capacity and efficiency affect the choice?
Compare the capacity and energy and water information for the exact model you are considering. “Compact” is a size category, not a guarantee that the machine will use less energy or water for your household’s dishes.

Under ENERGY STAR criteria effective in 2023, a compact dishwasher must meet maximum limits of 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle to qualify. ENERGY STAR also notes that compact dishwashers may use more energy over time when their smaller capacity leads to more loads. Check the model’s ENERGY STAR dishwasher information and EnergyGuide label, and consider how often you expect to run it.

GE’s product page identifies the PZF560HGWBB as a compact dishwasher with countertop, built-in, and under-sink installation options. GE lists six place settings, six wash cycles, ENERGY STAR qualification, and dimensions of 17.3 inches high by 21.7 inches wide by 20.125 inches deep. Those specifications make it a useful example of why a model’s actual dimensions and installation options matter more than the word “compact.”

How to choose and verify a model
- Choose the format from the space and installation constraints: built-in for a compatible permanent opening, floor portable for a faucet-connected wheeled unit, or countertop when the counter footprint is workable.
- Measure the full installation area: record width, depth, and height, then check open-door and loading clearance.
- Confirm the specific connections: check water supply, drain route, electrical access, and faucet fit as applicable in the manufacturer’s installation guidance.
- Resolve rental approval first: get required permission before plumbing or electrical changes.
- Compare capacity and efficiency information: use the model’s stated place settings, EnergyGuide, and ENERGY STAR information rather than assuming all compact machines perform alike.
- Verify current availability and specifications: check the manufacturer’s live page and confirm the exact model number with the retailer, since listings and product status can change.
