A suitable wall stud is the strongest option when it lines up with the desired position. If it does not, use a wall-specific hanger or anchor with a published rating that covers the load.
Start with the piece, the wall, and the frame
Before choosing a hook or anchor, establish three things:
- Weight: Weigh the complete framed piece, including its glass or mirror. Choose hardware for the actual load, not an estimate based on appearance.
- Wall material: Identify whether the fixing point is drywall, plaster, brick, concrete, or another substrate. Hardware that is intended for one material is not automatically suitable for another.
- Frame hardware: Check whether the frame has D-rings, picture wire, a French cleat, or another attachment. The wall-side fixing must work with that arrangement.
The Home Depot’s guide to hanging pictures identifies mounting into a suitable stud as the strongest and safest approach for heavy wall art. Whatever method you choose, follow the instructions for both the frame hardware and the wall fastener.
Choose a mounting method that suits the wall

For drywall without a stud, check the exact product rating
3M says its CLAW picture hangers are designed for drywall only and do not need a stud. The current US product range lists 15, 25, 45, and 65 lb versions. Those figures are 3M’s stated ratings for the individual products on drywall; they are not established as universal capacities for other wall materials, nor as independently verified safety limits. Do not add two CLAW ratings together. 3M permits using two only when the frame has two separate attachment points, and says the object’s weight must still remain within the package rating of one hanger. A drywall-specific product is not a recommendation for plaster, brick, or concrete; select hardware intended for the actual substrate.
Match the installation to the frame attachment
D-rings
Measure from the top and sides of the frame to each D-ring, transfer those positions to the wall, and check that the marks are level. Use wall fixings suited to the substrate and load. For a heavy mirror, have another person support it while you position and seat the rings.

Picture wire
Use wire intended for the frame and the load, with a suitable stated gauge. Two wall hangers can distribute the load, but the wall fixings and frame attachments must still be suitable for the complete piece. Check wire periodically for stretching or signs of wear.
French cleats
A French cleat supports a piece along a wider, interlocking mounting edge and is an option for some large or heavy frames. Select a cleat whose instructions cover the piece’s weight and wall material, and install both halves as directed; a general weight range for cleat sizes is not a substitute for the rating of the particular cleat.

Install carefully and consider where the piece could fall
- Weigh the complete piece and identify the wall material. Check the frame’s existing hardware and any manufacturer instructions.
- Look for a suitable stud at the intended position. If one is available, choose a rated fastener that works with the frame’s attachment.
- If there is no stud, select a fixing for the actual substrate. On drywall, use a drywall-rated hanger or a correctly selected anchor; for plaster or masonry, choose specialty hardware made for that material. Do not use the 3M CLAW outside its stated drywall use.
- Mark and install the frame-side arrangement accurately. Measure D-rings, wire, or cleats as appropriate; keep the piece level and use a helper for a heavy mirror.
- Check the finished installation. Confirm the frame is seated securely, and inspect picture wire periodically for stretching.
Where practical, avoid positioning a large picture or mirror above a bed, chair, or couch, where it could fall onto someone. FEMA’s 2008 safety sheet, “Mount Framed Pictures and Mirrors Securely,” is an additional source on secure placement; its search-result excerpt advises that large pictures and mirrors are more stable on two hooks than one.
What a weight rating does—and does not—tell you
A number on a package applies to the specified product and conditions, not to every hanger that looks similar or every wall. The 3M ratings cited here are manufacturer claims for its drywall products. The Home Depot’s 50–400 lb French-cleat figure describes a range across sizes. Neither figure should be transferred to a different product, substrate, or installation. The sources cited here do not establish independent comparative testing or failure rates.
