Externally Vented Over-the-Range Microwaves: What to Buy, What to Avoid, and What It Really Costs

Choose an externally vented over-the-range microwave by checking its exact factory vent setup, installation manual, duct route, and cabinet clearances. Budget separately for the appliance, installation, and any new ductwork or site modifications.

Choose an externally vented over-the-range microwave by confirming that its manual supports the exhaust direction your kitchen needs and that its duct, cabinet fit, and electrical setup are compatible. A model labeled “convertible” may be factory-set for recirculation rather than outside exhaust. Budget separately for the appliance, installation, and any new ductwork or other site modifications.

External exhaust sends air outdoors through a duct; recirculation filters air and returns it to the kitchen. Before buying, check the specific model’s installation instructions and measure the existing opening, duct route, and clearances rather than relying on nominal width or a CFM label alone.

What an External Vent Microwave Actually Does

An externally vented microwave draws air from above the cooktop and exhausts it outdoors through ductwork. A recirculating microwave instead passes air through filters and returns it to the kitchen; it does not provide external exhaust.

Many over-the-range models support more than one installation mode, but their factory setup can differ. GE’s JVM3162DJWW is listed as externally vented from the factory, while Hotpoint’s RVM5160MPSA is listed as convertible to external venting but factory-set for non-vented recirculation. Check whether the chosen model needs reconfiguration or specific parts before installation.

How to Compare Models

Compare specific models using their manufacturer specifications and installation manuals. These examples illustrate why configuration, size, power, filters, and price all matter; they are not hands-on recommendations or an exhaustive ranking.

Model Listed price Capacity and power Airflow Width Factory vent setup
GE JVM3162DJWW $339 MSRP 1.6 cu. ft.; 950 W 300 CFM 29 7/8 in. Externally vented
Hotpoint RVM5160MPSA $299 MSRP 1.6 cu. ft.; 1,000 W 300 CFM 29 7/8 in. Convertible to external venting; factory-set for recirculation

Manufacturer list prices are not installed prices and can differ from local dealer prices. The GE comparison says a compatible charcoal filter is a separate requirement if that model is converted to recirculation; Hotpoint lists a filter as included with its factory recirculation setup. Verify the exact model’s filter and conversion-part requirements.

What to Check Before You Buy

Measure the full installation, not just the nominal appliance width. Check cabinet opening, unit height and depth, door-swing clearance, mounting points, electrical location, and the route and direction of the existing duct. For example, GE lists its JVM3162DJWW at 29 7/8 inches wide and 16 7/16 inches high; dimensions vary by model.

Photograph and measure the existing duct, including its material, size, route, and outdoor termination. Confirm that the selected model supports the desired rear or vertical exhaust direction and that its manual allows the existing duct and cap. A model’s CFM rating by itself does not establish compatibility or installed performance.

Ask these questions before ordering:

  1. Does the installation manual support the exterior exhaust direction the kitchen requires?
  2. Is the unit factory-set for external exhaust, or does it need reconfiguration or parts?
  3. Does the duct size, material, route, and exterior cap match the manufacturer’s guidance?
  4. Do the cabinet, mounting, door, and electrical clearances work for this exact model?
  5. Which installation and site-work items are included in the written quote?

Duct Routing and Installation

Follow the exact appliance manual and local requirements. GE’s guidance specifies rigid rectangular 3 1/4 by 10 inch duct or rigid round 6 inch duct for its instructions, recommends using the specified size, and sets a 140-foot equivalent-length design limit for those duct types. It assigns equivalent lengths to fittings, including 40 feet for a wall cap and 24 feet for a roof cap. These are GE’s instructions, not universal limits for every microwave.

Whirlpool’s May 2025 installation instructions recommend rigid metal venting, a short and direct route with fewer elbows, uniformly sized duct, and a roof or wall cap with a backdraft damper. Check the selected model’s manual for permitted materials, transitions, and route limits.

Do not discharge exterior exhaust into an attic, crawl space, wall or ceiling cavity, garage, or shared duct. GE warns against attic or crawl-space discharge and connection to common ductwork; Whirlpool also warns against exhausting to concealed spaces when set up for exterior venting. GE states: “Microwaves cannot be ducted into a common duct work.”

Decide on the duct route before cabinets or finishes are finalized. A new exterior route, wall or roof penetration, cabinet changes, or electrical work may require additional trades and repairs. Retailer installation may cover an appliance placed in the same opening using existing electrical service and an existing exterior duct, but added or modified utilities and structural changes can fall outside that scope. Get a written quote that lists those items separately.

What It Really Costs

Separate the budget into three lines: appliance price, installation service or labor, and site modifications or materials. The cited GE and Hotpoint examples list MSRPs of $339 and $299, respectively; their manufacturers say local dealer prices may vary and that installation and delivery are excluded.

Cost item Published estimate What it describes
Microwave installation $155 average (Angi, 2026) National average based on 1,765 verified projects
Vented microwave ductwork installation $150–$600 (Angi, 2026) Estimated ductwork installation cost; scope may vary
GE JVM3162DJWW appliance $339 MSRP (GE Appliances, checked 2026) Manufacturer-listed appliance price, not installed total
Hotpoint RVM5160MPSA appliance $299 MSRP (Hotpoint, checked 2026) Manufacturer-listed appliance price, not installed total

These figures describe different scopes and should not be added together as a guaranteed total. A like-for-like replacement with compatible existing ductwork and electrical service may fit a retailer’s base installation scope. A new exterior penetration, duct conversion, electrical changes, cabinet work, structural changes, delivery, disposal, or patching and finishing can add costs. Ask for a site-specific written quote.

What to Buy and What to Avoid

Buy a model whose manual supports the exterior route your kitchen can accommodate and whose dimensions, duct connection, and electrical requirements fit the site. Use manufacturer-specified duct components and exact model-specific conversion parts when needed.

Avoid buying on nominal 30-inch width alone, assuming “convertible” means factory-ready for outside exhaust, or reusing unknown-size or unsuitable flexible duct without checking the manual. Do not vent into concealed spaces or a shared duct, and do not assume basic retailer installation includes a new exterior duct run or cabinet and electrical work.

Bottom Line

The right externally vented over-the-range microwave is the one that fits the cabinets and cooking area and can exhaust outdoors through a route allowed by its installation manual. Confirm the factory vent setup, duct compatibility, clearances, and electrical requirements before buying.

Use appliance prices, installation estimates, and ductwork estimates as separate budget lines, not as a promised installed total. If the project needs a new exterior route or changes to utilities or cabinets, get a site-specific quote that spells out the extra work.

FAQ

Do over-the-range microwaves actually vent outside?

Some are factory-set for external exhaust; others can be configured for it, and some arrive set for recirculation. Check the exact model’s manual and configuration. For external venting, the unit must exhaust through compatible ductwork to outdoors.

Does “convertible” mean the microwave is ready to vent outside?

Not necessarily. Hotpoint lists the RVM5160MPSA as convertible to external venting but factory-set for non-vented recirculation. Confirm whether the model needs reconfiguration or parts for the route you plan to use.

What duct size should I use?

Use the size, material, transitions, and route limits specified in the selected model’s installation instructions. For its guidance, GE specifies rigid rectangular 3 1/4 by 10 inch or rigid round 6 inch duct; that is not a universal rule for every brand.

How much does over-the-range microwave installation cost?

Angi’s 2026 guide reports a $155 average microwave installation cost based on 1,765 verified projects and estimates $150–$600 for vent ductwork installation. These are separate broad estimates, not a guaranteed combined quote. New duct routes, electrical or cabinet changes, and other site work may add cost.

Can I vent the microwave into an attic or shared duct?

No. GE warns against venting into an attic or crawl space and against connecting a microwave to common ductwork. Whirlpool also warns against discharging into concealed spaces when exhausting outdoors. Follow the selected model’s instructions and local requirements.
