To choose a front-control dishwasher, first measure the cabinet opening and compare it with the exact model’s installation instructions; “24-inch” is a nominal size, not a fit guarantee. Then compare total delivered and installed cost, the model’s EnergyGuide estimate, noise rating, drying approach, and rack layout against how your household uses the kitchen. Front controls are visible on the closed door, but control location alone does not indicate cleaning quality.
This guide uses current manufacturer and ENERGY STAR information, not independent appliance testing. Model availability, prices, installation service, and local connection requirements vary, so verify them before ordering.

Which front-control dishwasher should I buy?
There is no single best choice established by this research. Compare specific models against your measured opening, budget, sound preferences, dish loads, and service options. Bosch’s catalog, for example, listed two front-control models at different price points when checked on October 5, 2026; those are manufacturer-displayed prices, not guaranteed transaction prices or test-based recommendations.
| Example | Manufacturer-listed information | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Bosch SHE41CM5N, 100 Series | $729 catalog price when accessed October 5, 2026 | Exact dimensions, finish, current price, availability, EnergyGuide estimate, and installation service |
| Bosch SGE53C55UC, 300 Series | $1,099 catalog price when accessed October 5, 2026 | Exact dimensions, finish, current price, availability, EnergyGuide estimate, and installation service |
| Bosch SHE53CE5N | 33 7/8 × 23 9/16 × 23 3/4 inches; 46 dBA; ENERGY STAR certified | Confirm the model and finish match your needs and compare its installation sheet with your opening |
Bosch Home Appliances reported the catalog prices and SHE53CE5N specifications on pages accessed October 5, 2026. Product codes, prices, and stock can change. These examples are not a ranking based on comparative testing.

Will a 24-inch dishwasher fit my opening?
Not necessarily. A 24-inch dishwasher is in a nominal size category; actual appliance dimensions and the opening a model is designed for can differ. Whirlpool describes a typical standard built-in as about 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 35 inches high, while Bosch cites 24 inches wide and 34 inches high for a standard unit. KitchenAid’s current guidance gives typical dimensions of 24 inches wide, 34–36 inches high, and 24 inches deep. These are approximate manufacturer guidance, not interchangeable guarantees.
- Measure opening width at the top, middle, and bottom.
- Measure opening height at both sides and the center, and measure depth to any obstruction.
- Check toe-kick and finished-floor conditions, door swing, and clearance from adjacent cabinets or handles.
- Compare your measurements with the exact model’s installation sheet, not only its nominal size or product listing.
- Confirm the appliance can pass through the delivery route and that its connections suit the installation instructions.
Compact models are a separate size category. Check the precise product dimensions and installation requirements rather than assuming that a nominal width will fit.
How much does a dishwasher cost to run?
Use the model’s EnergyGuide label to compare estimated annual energy use and cost, rather than estimating from the purchase price alone. ENERGY STAR’s buyer guidance gives about $50 per year as a program-level estimate for a standard certified dishwasher and says buyers can save about 5,800 gallons of water over the appliance lifetime. Those figures are not a guarantee for an individual home; actual use and local utility rates affect operating costs.
| ENERGY STAR category | Maximum energy use | Maximum water use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 240 kWh per year | 3.2 gallons per cycle |
| Compact | 155 kWh per year | 2.0 gallons per cycle |
ENERGY STAR says these criteria became effective July 19, 2023. Check a specific model’s certification and EnergyGuide information; a category threshold is not a model-specific operating-cost estimate.

Compare the same information for each candidate. A feature is useful only if it fits your kitchen and the way you wash dishes.
| Comparison point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Fit | Exact appliance dimensions, measured opening, obstructions, delivery path, and door clearance |
| Total cost | Delivered price, installation, haul-away, connection parts, and any extra labor offered for your location |
| Operating cost | Model-specific EnergyGuide annual energy use and estimated cost |
| Noise | Advertised dBA rating, compared across models; room layout affects how noticeable sound is |
| Racks | Third-rack usefulness and adjustability for your plates, glasses, utensils, and cookware |
| Drying | The model’s drying approach and whether it suits your loads, especially plastic containers |
| Cycles and service | Cycles you will use, warranty terms, parts or service access, and local installation availability |
What does 46 dBA sound like?
A lower dBA rating means a quieter rated dishwasher, but the number is best used to compare models, not to predict exactly how loud a machine will seem in every room. Whirlpool says typical dishwashers fall in the 40s and 50s; Bosch describes around 40 dBA as very quiet and notes that noise can matter more in open-plan kitchens. If a model’s exact rating matters to you, verify it on the manufacturer’s current specification page.

For example, Bosch lists the SHE53CE5N at 46 dBA. Treat that as a manufacturer specification, not an independent measurement or a guarantee of perceived loudness in your kitchen.
Front-control vs. top-control dishwashers
Front-control models put buttons on the face of the door, where they remain visible when it is closed. Top-control models put controls along the top edge, hidden when the door is shut. Choose based on visibility and preference: control location alone says nothing about cleaning quality.

Whirlpool identifies features such as noise, drying choices, cycles, and adjustable or third racks as points that can differ between models. Compare those specifications and your actual needs rather than assuming one control layout or a longer feature list is automatically better.
Installation: what to check before checkout
Installation requirements vary by appliance, existing connections, location, and local rules. Follow the model’s installation instructions and ask the retailer or installer what is included before placing an order. A GE product page for the GDF550PGRWW, for example, described it as no longer manufactured, temporarily out of stock online, and unavailable for installation service when checked. That illustrates why model availability and service eligibility need checking; it is not a current-buy recommendation.
- Confirm opening measurements, flooring and toe-kick conditions, clearance, and delivery access.
- Check the water supply, shutoff, drain route, and electrical connection against the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Ask whether delivery, old-unit removal, installation, new connection parts, and extra labor are included and available in your area.
- Ask the local installer or authority about applicable plumbing and electrical requirements; do not assume one connection method or code rule applies everywhere.
- After installation, follow the manual’s test and leak-check instructions.
Do not treat a national installation price as a reliable quote: the research reviewed did not establish a standard national installation fee. Obtain a job-specific total that identifies appliance, delivery, installation, haul-away, parts, and additional work separately.

Are front-control dishwashers better than top-control dishwashers?
Neither layout is inherently better. Front controls keep buttons visible when the door is closed; top controls are hidden when it is shut. Choose the layout you prefer, then compare fit, features, cost, and operating estimates.

How do I know whether a dishwasher will fit?
Measure the opening at multiple points, check depth and door clearance, and compare those measurements with the exact model’s installation sheet. A nominal 24-inch designation does not guarantee fit.
How much does dishwasher installation cost?
The research reviewed does not establish a standard national installation price. Ask for a location-specific quote and confirm whether delivery, removal, installation, parts, and extra labor are included.
How much does a dishwasher cost to run?
Check the model’s EnergyGuide estimate for annual energy use and cost. ENERGY STAR gives about $50 per year as a program-level estimate for a standard certified dishwasher, not an individual household guarantee.
Does a lower dBA rating mean a dishwasher will seem quiet?
A lower rating means quieter relative to a higher-rated model, but room layout and household conditions affect perceived sound. Use dBA as a comparison and check the exact model’s specification.
