Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA kitchen timer with a clock keeps the time of day and a cooking reminder visible in one place. Choose one that is easy to read and set, whose clock stays visible while timing, and that can be placed where you can hear it; use its alarm as a prompt to check food, not as a guarantee against burning or a reason to leave cooking unattended.
There is no verified best model or tested feature ranking in the available research. Compare display legibility, control simplicity, alarm audibility and duration, how easily a countdown can be set or reset, clock visibility during a countdown, placement, power source, and cleanability. If food safety depends on its internal temperature, use a food thermometer as well: a timer measures elapsed time, not temperature.
What to Look for in a Kitchen Timer With a Clock
The right choice depends on how you cook and where the timer will sit. Check the following before buying rather than relying on an unverified model ranking.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Display | Can you read the clock and countdown from your usual cooking position? Does the clock remain visible while a timer is running? |
| Controls | Can you set, start, stop, and reset a countdown without confusing steps? |
| Alarm | Can you hear it from the places you normally move around? How long does it sound? |
| Placement | Can it sit or mount in a visible spot where you can hear it, away from heat, splashes, and flammable items? |
| Power and upkeep | Does its power source suit the intended location, and can it be kept clean? |
These are practical comparison questions, not proven indicators that one design prevents burns or fires. The reviewed sources do not test timer models or establish a best type.

How to Use a Timer as a Cooking Reminder
Set a countdown when you begin a cooking step, and treat the alarm as a reminder to check the food. The National Fire Protection Association advises people who are simmering, baking, or roasting to check food regularly, remain in the home, and use a timer as a reminder. Indiana Department of Homeland Security guidance likewise recommends using a timer to remind you to check cooking food.
- Choose a visible, audible place for the timer, away from heat and splashes.
- Set the countdown when you start the cooking step, rather than planning to set it later.
- When the alarm sounds, check the food and decide what it needs; do not assume it is done just because the time elapsed.
- If cooking continues, set another reminder and keep checking as appropriate.
- Stay in the home while food is cooking, and keep flammable items away from the stovetop.
A timer can help you remember to check, but it does not guarantee food will not burn and does not make it safe to leave active cooking unattended.

Timer or Food Thermometer?
They answer different questions. A timer tracks elapsed time; a food thermometer checks temperature. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service says a food thermometer is the only way to know whether food has reached a safe internal temperature. Follow the thermometer maker’s directions: some oven, cord, wireless, or smart probes are designed to remain in food while it cooks, while instant-read types are used near the end.
| Tool | What it tells you | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen timer | How much time has elapsed or remains in a set countdown | Whether the center of food has reached a safe temperature |
| Food thermometer | The temperature at the measured point in food | How long a cooking step has been running unless it includes a timer function |
USDA FSIS lists safe minimum internal temperatures of 165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meats, 145°F for fish and shellfish, and 145°F followed by a three-minute rest for whole cuts of beef, pork, veal, and lamb. Measure with a food thermometer and apply the guidance to the listed food categories.

FAQ
Do I need a kitchen timer if my oven has one?
Not necessarily. An oven timer may be enough if you can see and hear it where you cook and it suits your routine. A separate timer with a clock can be useful if you want a visible reminder in another cooking area or want to track another task at the same time.
Can a kitchen timer help keep food from burning?
It can remind you to check food, which may help you notice when it needs attention. It cannot guarantee that food will not burn. Set it when you start cooking and check food regularly.

What timer is easiest to read while cooking?
Look for a display you can read from your usual cooking position, with controls you can set and reset easily. Check whether the clock remains visible while the countdown is running, and choose a placement where the alarm is audible.
Can I leave food cooking if I set a timer?
No. A timer is a reminder, not permission to leave cooking unattended. NFPA advises people simmering, baking, or roasting to check regularly and remain in the home while food is cooking.

- 4 TIMING FUNCTIONS IN ONE: Unlike basic count-up/down timers, this one adds a 12-Hour Clock and Daily Alarm. The Clock lets you quickly check the current time without reaching for your phone or another clock, and the Daily Alarm helps keep a daily task or routine on schedule—so you can use one device for more of your everyday time needs—not just track elapsed or remaining time
- LOUD OR SILENT—CHOOSE HOW YOU'RE ALERTED: From busy kitchens to focused classrooms and meetings, switch between two alert modes—sound and light—to fit the moment. In Sound Mode, the 70–90 dB alarm is loud enough to be heard from another room, helping prevent overcooking while you multitask; in Light Mode, button presses stay silent while a flashing light helps keep lessons, meetings, and focus sessions on track without breaking the quiet
- SEE IT CLEARLY—PLACE IT YOUR WAY: Stop working around a timer that's hard to see or awkward to place. Large digits on the 2.8-inch LCD make time easy to check at a glance—without stepping closer or breaking your rhythm. 3 strong rear magnets, a fold-out stand, and a built-in hanging hole offer 3 flexible placement options—attach it securely to a magnetic surface, stand it on a desk or counter, or hang it—so you can position it to suit the task, with the display in clear view and controls close at hand
- LONGER TIMING RANGE FOR MORE TASKS: Count up or down for up to 24 hours—far beyond timers limited to 99 minutes 59 seconds—so this timer handles a wider range of timing needs, from short everyday tasks to hours-long cooking, including slow-cooker meals and smoking meats
- ONE BUTTON, ONE JOB—FASTER SETUP: Dedicated Hour, Min, Sec, and Clear buttons make setting and resetting simple and direct—no button combinations to remember. For longer countdowns, press and hold the Hour, Min, or Sec button for 3 seconds to quickly advance the numbers instead of tapping the same button again and again, making longer countdowns faster and easier to set
Can a timer tell me whether meat is safely cooked?
No. A timer tracks time, not internal temperature. USDA FSIS recommends using a food thermometer to know whether food has reached a safe internal temperature.
