Plan Drainage and Mounting
Drainage and attachment are central to a sound installation. Make sure water can leave the box, and do not let brackets or other installation details block drain openings. Choose brackets and fasteners for the box, its expected load, and the wall material. Follow the product directions rather than assuming one method fits every siding or structure.

On a framed wall, the attachment needs to reach suitable framing or backing; masonry requires hardware appropriate to the masonry. If you are unsure what is behind the cladding or how to fasten the box safely, get qualified help before drilling.
Seal mounting holes as directed. Lowe’s installation guidance recommends silicone at mounting holes to help keep water from entering the stud, and This Old House includes sealing pilot holes in its installation steps. Use a sealant suitable for the product and exterior, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

DIY Installation: A Careful Approach
Tools and materials vary by box and wall. Lowe’s lists a drill/driver, stud finder, fasteners, and silicone caulk among the items for its installation guidance. Check the product instructions for the appropriate hardware and method for your cladding.
- Inspect the intended location and confirm the wall and window are suitable for the box.
- Read the box and bracket instructions. Check the dimensions, mounting options, drainage openings, and any load guidance supplied by the manufacturer.
- Lay out the mounting points according to the instructions, using a stud finder where appropriate on a framed wall.
- Drill and fasten using hardware suited to the wall and the product. Do not block drain openings.
- Seal mounting holes as directed, using exterior silicone where appropriate to the installation.
- Fit the box and confirm it is secure and that water can drain before planting.
Installation details vary with siding and structure. If the location is difficult to access, the wall is damaged, or you cannot identify an appropriate attachment method, use a qualified installer.

Planting and Appearance
Choose plants for the light and conditions at the window, and use a potting mix and planting approach suitable for the box. Keep the drainage path clear, and make sure plants do not prevent the window from operating as intended.

How do I keep water from getting into the wall?
