A ductless, recirculating, or non-vented range hood filters some grease and odors, then returns the air to your kitchen. It does not exhaust heat or humidity outdoors, so it is a constrained option when outdoor ducting is impracticalโnot an equivalent substitute for a ducted hood. Before choosing one, confirm that the exact hood supports recirculation, that its required filters and components are available, and that you have another plan for kitchen heat and moisture.
What a Ductless Range Hood Does
A recirculating hood draws kitchen air through filters and sends the treated air back into the room. The grease filter and charcoal filter serve different purposes: grease filters collect grease and need regular cleaning, while charcoal filters are used for odor control. Filter arrangements and instructions vary by model.

Recirculation does not remove cooking heat or humidity from the kitchen. It also should not be assumed to remove pollutants just because a hood has a fan or charcoal filter. If you need to exhaust air outdoors, choose a compatible ducted installation with an approved termination. Never discharge a duct into an attic, wall, ceiling, garage, or crawlspace.
When Does a Ductless Hood Make Sense?
A ductless hood can make sense when an outdoor duct cannot reasonably be installed, cooking and odor-control expectations are modest, and compatible replacement filters remain available. Because the air returns to the room, consider how the kitchen will otherwise exhaust heat and moisture.

Compare the actual installation options rather than treating ductless and ducted operation as equivalent. There is no reliable head-to-head product testing or comparable price information in the research for this guide, so a model winner or price ranking would not be justified.

Check Whether Your Hood Can Be Converted
Some range hoods support both ducted and recirculating installation with model-specific parts; others are designed as non-vented units. Do not assume a generic conversion kit will fit. Check the exact model number and its manual before buying a charcoal filter, deflector, or conversion kit.
For example, Broan’s ARKBWP optional non-duct kit is for compatible Broan BWP series hoods in 24-, 30-, and 36-inch widths. Broan specifies FILTERBWPTS charcoal filters for that kit. This is a product-specific example, not a universal conversion solution.
Installation: Follow the Exact Manual
Mounting height and clearances vary by hood and cooking appliance. Use the hood and range manufacturers’ instructions rather than applying a single height across models. For outdoor-exhaust installations, use the specified duct size, keep the route short and straight with few turns as Broan advises, and terminate outdoors. Haier warns against venting into concealed spaces, where grease and moisture can accumulate.

- Confirm whether the model supports ductless operation and identify every required filter or conversion component.
- Check mounting height, clearances, electrical requirements, and the intended air outlet against the hood and range instructions.
- If ducting outdoors, verify the specified duct route and outdoor termination; do not vent into a concealed space.
- For local project requirements, check with the building department and the professionals responsible for the remodel.
Filters and Everyday Use
Keep grease filters installed in the positions required by the manual and clean them on the schedule specified for your model. Charcoal filters are not interchangeable by default: use the part identified for your hood, and follow its replacement instructions.

Service guidance differs by manufacturer and model. Whirlpool says its charcoal filter may last up to six months with normal use; GE says its charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and should be changed when odors pass through. These are manufacturer-specific instructions, not a universal replacement interval. Whirlpool also advises starting the hood before cooking and letting it run for several minutes afterward to clear smoke and odors.
- Check the manual for how to remove and clean the grease filter and whether it is dishwasher-safe.
- Identify the correct charcoal filter by hood model; do not treat filters as universal.
- Replace the charcoal filter as directed by the manufacturer or when the manual’s stated condition for replacement is met.
- After installation or filter service, confirm that filters and any recirculation components are seated as the manual directs.
What Performance Claims Can Tell You
Airflow alone does not establish how well a hood captures cooking emissions. If comparing products, look for a capture-efficiency rating measured under a stated test method, along with documented sound ratings and clear model-specific filter information. The available research does not provide comparable results for individual residential models.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor AirPlus Verification Requirements Version 2, published in July 2024, recommends at least 70% capture efficiency for range hoods and microwave-range hoods tested under ASTM E3087 or an equivalent method. This is dated program guidance, not a universal code requirement. The document also describes a narrow multifamily exception involving an electric cooktop, a charcoal-filter recirculating hood, and specified continuous kitchen exhaust to outdoors; it does not establish that recirculating hoods meet every home’s exhaust needs.

Code and Project Requirements
Whether a recirculating hood is acceptable depends on the project and applicable local requirements. The EPA Indoor AirPlus multifamily provision is specific and should not be read as a general approval for every home or remodel. Check the adopted local code, project requirements, and appliance manual before relying on a ductless hood.

Do ductless range hoods actually work?
They filter some grease and odors and return air to the kitchen. Their usefulness depends on the model, compatible filters, maintenance, and your expectations; they do not exhaust heat or humidity outdoors.

Do ductless range hoods remove heat and humidity?
No. A recirculating hood returns filtered air to the room rather than carrying heat and humidity outside.
How often do I replace a charcoal range hood filter?
