If food is freezing in your Samsung refrigerator’s fresh-food compartment, first turn off Power Cool if it is active, move food away from cold-air vents and cold spots, and check the temperature setting and room conditions. Samsung recommends requesting service if the problem continues after these checks. The symptom alone does not identify a failed part.
Why is my Samsung refrigerator freezing food?
Samsung’s U.S. troubleshooting guide for “Items freezing in the fridge compartment” points first to cooling settings, food placement and airflow, and the room environment. These checks can address common causes, but they do not diagnose an internal fault. The exact controls and suitable temperature setting depend on your refrigerator model.
What to check first

Turn off Power Cool
Check the display or app for Power Cool. Samsung says this function raises refrigerator-compartment cooling to its maximum, which may be colder than needed. Turn it off if it is on; consult your model’s manual or on-screen instructions for the control steps, since they vary by model.

Move food away from vents and cold spots
Samsung identifies the back, bottom, and areas in front of vents as the coldest places. Move food that is freezing to a different shelf or drawer, and use the designated drawers for produce where appropriate. Foods with high water content, such as meat, fruit, and vegetables, can freeze more readily near cold-air vents.

Keep interior vents clear
Check that food or containers are not blocking the vents. Samsung advises leaving about 2 inches of clearance around interior vents. If vents are blocked or covered in frost, airflow can be affected and food may freeze. Heavy or recurring frost should not be dismissed as a simple storage problem.

Review the temperature setting
Check the displayed setting and compare it with the guidance for your exact model. Samsung’s Korean service guidance also recommends checking the set temperature. Do not assume a single temperature setting is right for every Samsung refrigerator.

Consider the room environment
Samsung’s U.S. issue-specific guidance says the refrigerator may not cool properly in a room above 110°F or below 50°F. Check the room conditions and your model’s manual for its operating requirements.
Use the freezing pattern as a clue, not a diagnosis
- Food near a vent, the back, or the bottom freezes: Reposition it and make sure nearby vents have clearance.
- One shelf or drawer is affected: Check what is stored nearby and whether airflow is obstructed.
- Food freezes throughout the compartment, or the issue remains after the checks: The cause is not established by the symptom alone. Contact Samsung or a qualified appliance technician rather than guessing at a component.
A refrigerator thermometer can help you observe conditions in a particular location, but it is optional and does not diagnose a mechanical fault. Placement matters: a reading from an unrepresentative spot may not reflect conditions elsewhere in the compartment.

When to request service
If food continues freezing after you have checked Power Cool, food placement, vent clearance, temperature settings, and room conditions, Samsung advises requesting service. Samsung’s U.S. support page says: “If your food items are still freezing after performing the above steps, visit the Support Center to request service.” A technician can inspect the appliance; without a model, measured temperature, error code, or inspection, there is not enough evidence to identify a failed sensor, damper, control board, or other part.
