Performance can vary with roof pitch, gutter size, rainfall rate, tree species, installation quality, and local weather. Before choosing, ask each installer to explain how the proposed system is expected to handle the debris and rainfall at your home. Confirm that any existing gutters are sound and correctly pitched before treating an over-gutter installation as a like-for-like alternative to replacement.

Ask each contractor to itemize the same scope, including:
- Gutter condition, any repairs, and whether replacement is included
- Gutter length, downspouts, and removal and disposal of old materials
- Cleaning or preparation work and any other included services
- Number of stories and access requirements
- Any roof, fascia, or gutter work, and how it may affect existing warranties
Compare the written warranties, not sales summaries
LeafFilter’s brand-authored comparison says its warranty covers clogs and resulting interior water damage. In its description of LeafGuard, LeafFilter says that warranty covers certain material deterioration but does not guarantee against clogs, and characterizes the transfer terms differently. These are one manufacturer’s summaries of competing warranties; they are not substitutes for the current contracts for your quoted installation.

Check what is covered, exclusions, required maintenance, available remedies, transfer rules, and any limits related to installation or existing gutter condition. Get written confirmation of how proposed work affects any existing roof, fascia, or gutter warranties.

Yes, plan for occasional inspection and upkeep rather than assuming either product eliminates maintenance. The systems have different designs and maintenance tradeoffs, but neither should be treated as maintenance-free. Ask the installer what debris is likely to collect on your roof or guard, how to inspect the system safely, and what upkeep the warranty requires. If you would rather not do that work yourself, local professional cleaning or maintenance is another option.
