Then let the motor cool for 3–5 minutes before pressing the red reset button. If it still will not run, check the circuit breaker or fuse; persistent leaks or faults need qualified service.
Start safely before troubleshooting
- Turn the disposer off before investigating a jam. If you need to check power, use the wall switch; do not put your hand into the disposer.
- Use a flashlight to look for visible objects and remove them with tongs or pliers. InSinkErator’s official jam-clearing instructions say: “Do not place your hand in the garbage disposal at any time.”
- If you are unsure how to isolate power safely, stop and contact a qualified service professional.
Badger 5 hums, is stuck, or stops while grinding
A hum without grinding, a stuck grinding plate, or a sudden stop can indicate a jam. The Badger 5 manual describes using the supplied self-service wrench from the bottom of the unit to free it.
- Switch the disposer off.
- From beneath the sink, insert one end of the supplied wrench into the centered hole on the bottom of the disposer.
- Work the wrench back and forth until it completes one full revolution. Remove the wrench.
- Use a flashlight to inspect for visible debris. Remove any reachable object with tongs or pliers, not your hand.
- After clearing the jam, follow the reset steps below.
If the supplied tool is missing, InSinkErator’s support instructions say a standard 1/4-inch Allen wrench can be used instead. Follow the manual for your installed model rather than assuming every disposer has the same procedure. If the jam returns or the wrench will not turn the mechanism, stop and arrange service.
Reset the Badger 5 after clearing a jam
The Badger 5 manual directs users to let the motor cool for 3–5 minutes after clearing a jam, then lightly press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposer.

- Wait 3–5 minutes for the motor to cool.
- Lightly press the red reset button on the disposer’s bottom.
- Switch the disposer on and check whether it runs normally.
- If it remains off, check the electrical service panel for a tripped breaker or blown fuse.
The 3–5 minute interval is the Badger 5 manual’s instruction. A separate InSinkErator reset support page describes the overload button as sitting about 1/4 inch (5 mm) down when tripped, but that is not a substitute for the model manual’s cooldown directions.
If the Badger 5 is still without power
After resetting the disposer and checking the service panel, do not repeatedly force the reset button or dismantle electrical components. If the breaker trips again, the unit remains inoperative, or you cannot confidently identify the electrical issue, stop using it and contact qualified service. Electrical work beyond your experience should be handled by a qualified professional.

If the disposer is leaking
The available official Badger 5 instructions do not provide a complete leak diagnosis or model-specific leak repair. Stop using the disposer and, without touching internal parts, note whether the visible water appears to come from a plumbing connection or the disposer body. Persistent leakage or a leak whose source is unclear warrants qualified inspection; do not assume that sealing or dismantling the unit is an appropriate fix.
Reduce repeat jams, buildup, and odors
Use water correctly
InSinkErator recommends running the disposer with a moderate flow of cold water and letting cold water continue for a few seconds after grinding. Hot water is acceptable between grinding periods. Do not pour grease or fat into the disposer or drain.

Clean the grind chamber and baffle
The Badger 5 manual says food particles can build up in the grind chamber and baffle. Its cleaning method is to half-fill the sink with warm water, add 1/4 cup of baking soda, then release the stopper while the disposer runs. Follow the manual’s instructions for your installed unit.

Warranty terms depend on the product and document edition. InSinkErator’s current US Badger 5 product listing describes the listed 1/2 HP model as having manual-reset overload protection and a 5-year “We Come to You” in-home limited service warranty. The surfaced Badger 5 manual edition lists a 2-year in-home full-service warranty. These are not interchangeable terms for every Badger 5 sold: check the unit label and serial number, purchase records, and warranty applicable to your location before paying for repair or buying a replacement.

If replacement is being considered, verify the exact model and revision, power-cord configuration, electrical connection, mounting and plumbing compatibility, warranty eligibility, and repair cost. The current product listing does not establish that every older Badger 5 is identical or compatible without those checks.
