For brushing interior walls, choose a flat, square-cut brush about 3–4 inches wide with synthetic nylon or polyester bristles for typical water-based latex paint. Use an angled sash brush for corners, ceiling lines and trim. For broad, uninterrupted wall surfaces, a roller is usually more practical than a brush.
Choose bristles to match the paint
For water-based interior latex paint, use synthetic bristles. Sherwin-Williams says blended nylon and polyester combine nylon’s durability with polyester’s ability to retain its shape; it also notes that polyester brushes hold shape and stiffness in latex paint. Sherwin-Williams’ brush guide covers these material distinctions.
Benjamin Moore also recommends synthetic bristles for water-based interior paints, describing soft nylon or polyester as flexible and capable of reducing brush marks. For oil-based paint, stains and varnishes, Sherwin-Williams recommends natural China bristle. Benjamin Moore identifies natural White China bristles for woodwork, enamels and marine applications. Check the paint label and brush packaging when selecting a brush for a particular coating.
Match the brush shape to the job
Flat brushes for larger, flat sections
A flat, square-cut brush holds more paint than a small detail brush and is suited to larger flat areas, including wall sections and paneling. Manufacturer recommendations differ by task: Benjamin Moore describes 3–4-inch flat brushes for large flat surfaces such as walls, while Sherwin-Williams gives 4–5 inches as a rule of thumb for larger areas. These are selection ranges, not a universal standard.

Angled sash brushes for edges and details
The slanted bristles of an angled sash brush help guide paint along corners and edges. It is a useful choice for cutting in at the ceiling, painting trim, and working around molding or other detailed surfaces. Sherwin-Williams suggests 2½–3 inches for trim and corners and 1–2 inches for small spaces and fine detail; a narrower brush may offer more control in a confined area.
See Sherwin-Williams’ homeowner guidance and Benjamin Moore’s brush-selection guidance for their respective descriptions of brush shapes and uses. Sherwin-Williams’ contractor brush guide gives additional material and width guidance.

Brush or roller for an interior wall?
For a large, flat wall, a roller is generally the practical way to cover the surface. Benjamin Moore recommends a roller cover for large, flat surfaces such as walls and ceilings, and reserves brushes for raised, recessed or finer details. A brush makes most sense for edges, touch-ups, detailed areas, or when you specifically prefer to brush the wall. See Benjamin Moore’s interior-project brush guidance.

Bob Vila’s product review names the Purdy XL Swan Flat Paint Brush as its best-for-walls pick. The review describes it as a 3-inch, square-cut brush with nylon/polyester bristles and reports testing comfort and coverage. That makes it a relevant example of a synthetic flat wall brush, not a universal winner for every paint, wall or painter. The assessment and testing belong to Bob Vila’s review.
