For seed starting and transplanting, the best paper planter depends on the seedling’s size and how you plan to move it: choose a ready-made recycled-paper pot for convenience, a molded-pulp pot or tray for a different fiber format, or make newspaper pots at home. Paper planters are temporary growing containers, not durable decorative flowerpots. No single option is established as best overall, and the available product claims do not prove a quantified environmental advantage over plastic or peat alternatives.

Paper planter options at a glance

Option Best suited to What to check
Ready-made recycled-paperboard pots Gardeners who want a ready-to-fill pot with stated sizes and transplant features. Size, base design, current availability, and the maker’s material and disposal instructions.
Molded-pulp pots and trays Gardeners considering paper-fiber formats beyond rolled newspaper. Product-specific sizing, planting directions, and whether home compostability is claimed or certified.
DIY newspaper pots Gardeners who have newspaper and want to make temporary pots without buying ready-made containers. How wet the paper gets, how securely the base holds, and when to pot up the seedling.

These are different formats, not interchangeable guarantees of strength, planting method, or end-of-life performance. Product descriptions are the source for the specific features below; they are not a standardized comparison of wet strength, lifespan, or environmental impact.

Ready-made recycled-paper pots

Botanical Interests Recycled Paper Pots For Seedlings

Botanical Interests lists 1.5-, 3-, and 4-inch pots for different seedling uses. Its product page identifies the larger sizes for larger seedlings and some varieties that are sensitive to root disturbance. The pots have a perforated base that the company says can be torn away when wet to help with transplanting. These are product-specific features; do not assume every paper pot has a tear-away base or is intended to be planted intact.

The manufacturer describes the pots as made from 100% recycled, food-grade paperboard, produced with low-water and low-energy methods, and biodegradable in a garden or compost bin. Those are Botanical Interests’ claims, not independently verified comparative lifecycle findings. The product page showed one variant sold out when checked, so confirm current stock before choosing a size: Botanical Interests Recycled Paper Pots For Seedlings.

Molded-pulp pots and trays

Pulp-Tec describes recycled-material pots and trays in multiple sizes and says they are home compostable, biodegradable, and suitable for direct planting. These claims should be checked against the documentation for the specific product you are considering: the terms do not establish the same thing, and the supplier page does not provide a standardized comparison of performance or decomposition time. See Pulp-Tec’s garden products.

DIY newspaper pots and a reusable pot maker

Make pots with newspaper

A newspaper pot is a no-purchase option if you have suitable paper. The Associated Press describes folding newspaper into a strip, rolling it around a can to form a cylinder, folding the paper at the base, and securing it if needed. A University of Florida IFAS activity plan similarly describes wrapping paper around a rolling pin or bottle, forming the base, then placing the pots in a seed tray and filling them with growing medium. IFAS specifies recycled newspaper with environmentally safe ink and glue and recommends poking holes in the pot at planting to encourage decomposition. See the AP’s newspaper-pot guidance and the University of Florida IFAS seed-starting activity plan.

Use a paper-pot maker for convenience

Burgon & Ball’s Paper Pot Maker kit forms newspaper pots listed at 3 cm, 4.75 cm, and 6 cm in diameter, using FSC-certified hardwood, according to the maker. Burgon & Ball says the finished pots can be planted directly without removing them. The tool is optional; rolling paper around a cylinder is another way to form a pot. The product page stated a £12.99 price and acceptance of orders from mainland UK addresses only when checked; price and availability can change. Check the current details at Burgon & Ball Paper Pot Maker.

How to choose a paper planter

  • Match the size to the seedling and schedule. Choose a pot that suits the plant’s current size and the expected time before transplanting. Small pots may be suitable early on, but seedlings need a larger container as their roots grow.
  • Check how transplanting is meant to work. A product may be designed for direct planting, have a tear-away base, or require different handling. Follow that specific product’s instructions rather than treating all paper pots alike.
  • Look beyond the word “paper.” Prefer a clear material description. “Paper” or “biodegradable” alone does not document coatings, additives, inks, or certification.
  • Consider watering and wet strength. Newspaper can become soggy if saturated. Product pages do not establish a standardized wet-strength or lifespan comparison, so avoid assuming one format will hold up longer than another.
  • Separate end-of-life terms. Biodegradability, home compostability, and suitability for direct planting are distinct claims. Look for product-specific disposal and planting instructions, and for certification where that matters to you.
  • Check regional availability. Stock and delivery areas can restrict your options; verify them on the current product page before purchasing.

Watering and potting up

For newspaper pots, the AP’s Jessica Damiano recommends keeping the soil surface moist with a spray bottle to avoid soaking the paper through conventional watering. Monitor seedlings as they grow and move them into larger containers when their roots need more room. The AP says newspaper pots can be planted whole when stepping up; use that approach only when it suits the pot and the planting instructions. The tear-away base described by Botanical Interests is a different, product-specific transplant option.
