It costs more, requires careful installation and curing, and may be unsuitable where water must drain through the joints. Conventional paver joint sand is easier to replenish or remove and may suit permeable systems when specified for them. Choose according to the paver system, joint dimensions, drainage, and how you expect to maintain the surface.
What is the difference between polymeric and regular paver sand?
Polymeric sand is graded sand blended with a dry binder or other additives. Water activates the binder, and the filled joint firms as the material cures. Conventional paver joint sand has no bonding agent and remains loose; its stability depends more on the fit and friction between the pavers.
“Regular sand” can mean several different materials. This comparison is about sand intended for joints between pavers—not play sand, masonry sand, bedding sand beneath the pavers, or the compacted aggregate base. Those are separate materials with separate jobs. Belgard describes the base, bedding, pavers, and jointing material as distinct installation layers: Belgard’s paver installation guide.
Which material is better for your project?
| Consideration | Polymeric sand | Conventional paver joint sand |
|---|---|---|
| Joint behavior | The activated binder firms the filled joint after curing. | Remains loose; stability depends on paver fit and friction. |
| Washout and erosion | Manufacturers and retailers describe better resistance when it is properly installed and cured. | More liable to migrate or wash out; inspect and replenish eroded joints. |
| Weeds and insects | May reduce opportunities for seeds and insects to enter joints, but does not guarantee a weed-free surface. | Seeds can settle in loose or eroded joints; keeping joints full helps. |
| Up-front cost | Higher in The Home Depot’s indicative 2026 estimates. | Lower in The Home Depot’s indicative 2026 estimates. |
| Maintenance and flexibility | Installation needs care; removal or repairs can take more work. | Easier to top up and can suit projects where pavers may be lifted and reset. |
| Drainage | Do not assume it is suitable where water must infiltrate through joints; check the paver system and product instructions. | May suit permeable systems when they specify permeable joint aggregate. |
| Installation | Dry pavers, clean faces, suitable joints, full-depth filling, compaction, and controlled wetting matter. | Simpler to apply and replenish, but still needs to be suitable for the system. |
The Home Depot’s 2026 guide gives indicative estimates of about $20–$40 for a 50-pound bag of polymeric sand and about $5–$10 for a 50-pound bag of regular paver sand. The comparison does not establish a location, SKU, or checkout price, so check local prices before budgeting: The Home Depot’s polymeric-versus-regular sand guide.

When should you choose polymeric sand?
Consider it when you want a firmer joint and reduced migration from erosion, and the product’s requirements match your pavers, joint width, and site drainage. It can also make it harder for weed seeds and insects to enter joints. Those benefits depend on proper installation and do not make the joints weed-proof or maintenance-free.
Product limits are not interchangeable. For example, Sakrete’s PermaSand technical data sheet specifies joints from 1/4 inch to 1.5 inches and says not to use the product in areas subject to standing water. Check the current bag and technical data sheet for the specific formula you plan to use: Sakrete PermaSand technical data sheet.

When is conventional joint sand the better fit?
Choose conventional or system-specified joint material when you need a joint that is easy to replenish, expect to lift and reset pavers, or are working with a permeable installation. Do not substitute generic loose sand for a permeable system’s specified joint aggregate. Unilock, for example, recommends jointing sand conforming to ASTM C936 in its driveway installation guidance; that is a recommendation for its guidance, not a universal specification for every paver system or jurisdiction: Unilock’s paver driveway installation guide.
What does the longevity estimate actually mean?
The Home Depot’s 2026 guide estimates polymeric sand may last 3–10 years, compared with at least annual touch-ups for regular paver sand. These are retailer estimates, not an independent comparative lifecycle study or a guarantee. Actual maintenance depends on the product, installation quality, traffic, drainage, and exposure. The reviewed sources do not establish independently measured performance statistics for polymeric sand versus conventional joint sand.

How do you reduce the risk of polymeric-sand failure?
Follow the instructions for the exact product. Sakrete’s PermaSand requirements are product-specific, not universal rules for every polymeric sand.
- Check the site and forecast. PermaSand calls for a sound drainage base and says not to apply if rain is forecast within 24 hours. Do not use it in areas subject to standing water.
- Prepare the joints. For an existing patio, Sakrete advises removing old joint material to the full depth. Make sure joint width and depth fit the product instructions.
- Wait for dry pavers. The data sheet says pavers must be completely dry; damp or wet pavers can be stained by polymer residue.
- Fill and compact. Sweep material into joints to full depth, compact the dry material as directed, and clear dust from the paver faces before wetting. A broom is useful; a low-setting leaf blower may help with dust where appropriate.
- Wet carefully. Use a controlled spray, such as an adjustable hose nozzle. Too little water can leave material at the bottom of a joint uncured; excess water can float polymer onto the surface and cause staining. Use a pressure washer only if the preparation task and product instructions call for it.
- Protect the cure. Sakrete specifies protection from rain for 24 hours after application and says setting may take 48 hours or longer depending on temperature, humidity, and substrate conditions. Follow the current product directions for site access and cure time.
Will polymeric sand stop weeds?
No jointing sand can promise that. A hardened joint may discourage seed establishment, but it does not kill deep or extensive roots. Sakrete notes that severe infestations can return from roots beneath the pavers. If weeds are already established, address the infestation and its source rather than expecting new joint material alone to eliminate it.
