Add a mild, pH-neutral cleaner only if water is not enough and the stone is compatible. “Polishing” usually isn’t part of routine cleaning: a generic wash cannot restore an etched or worn polished finish, and aggressive pressure or acidic cleaners can damage some stone.
First, distinguish loose rocks from fixed stone
Cleaning a bed of loose decorative gravel is different from cleaning a fixed boulder, stone paving, or a wall. Advice written for stone surfaces may not work in a loose bed: a forceful rinse can shift rocks and churn up the dirt underneath. Work in small sections and use a gentle stream. If the rocks can be moved and the quantity is manageable, you can rinse a small batch separately; no particular loose-rock washing setup is established as suitable for every bed.
Where possible, identify the material before using any cleaner. Limestone and marble are calcareous stones and can be sensitive to acids; sandstone is porous and may need especially gentle treatment. If you do not know what the rocks are, ask the supplier or stick to water and gentle brushing.
A gentle cleaning sequence
- Clear loose debris. Pick out leaves and larger debris by hand or sweep gently, taking care not to scatter rocks into nearby planting.
- Test a small area. Choose an inconspicuous spot. Rinse with a hose on a gentle setting or a low-pressure sprayer; porous or softer stone calls for particular restraint.
- Brush by hand. Use a soft natural- or plastic-bristle brush to loosen dirt. The U.S. General Services Administration recommends wet natural- or plastic-bristle brushes for sandstone surfaces and advises against powered rotary brushes in that context. A soft-bristle scrub brush is a suitable tool category; no particular model is implied.
- Add a mild cleaner only if needed. For compatible stone, use warm water with a neutral stone cleaner, stone soap, or a small amount of mild dish detergent. Avoid an excessive concentration, and rinse thoroughly with clean water so residue does not remain on the stone.
- Let the rocks dry and reassess. Drying helps distinguish remaining dirt from staining, etching, or a change in the stone’s finish. Do not escalate to a harsher chemical or stronger spray without checking that it is suitable for the material.
Choose the method for the stone and the problem
| Situation | Safer starting point | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Loose decorative rocks | Clear debris, then gently rinse and brush a small section. | A strong stream can move the rocks and stir underlying soil; avoid blasting the bed in place. |
| Fixed sandstone or other porous stone | Low-pressure water and a wet, soft natural- or plastic-bristle brush. | Sandstone guidance is for surfaces, not loose gravel. Avoid powered rotary brushing and aggressive pressure. |
| Hard stone paving | Test a low-pressure rinse first; use a compatible neutral cleaner if needed. | Guidance for robust paving should not be generalized to softer stone or loose rocks. Pressure-washer use depends on the material and setup. |
| Routine dirt | Water and brushing; if needed, a compatible neutral cleaner diluted as directed. | Rinse thoroughly to prevent residue. |
| Algae, moss, or persistent staining | Identify the stone and stain before choosing a treatment. | Cleaning recommendations differ by stain and material; an oxidizing product may react with stone. Deep rust can be especially difficult to remove. |
Cleaners and methods to avoid or treat cautiously
Vinegar and other acids
Do not use vinegar or another acidic cleaner on unidentified landscaping rock. Acids can etch or dull calcareous stone, including limestone and marble; STIHL Australia also advises against vinegar on natural-stone paving. Use an acid only if the stone supplier confirms compatibility.

Bleach and oxidizing products
Advice about bleach depends on the stone and the type of stain. The Natural Stone Institute lists diluted agents for some biological stains, but that does not make bleach a universal treatment. The National Park Service warns that oxidizing cleaners can react with stone and leave salts in pores, potentially contributing to decay. Never mix bleach with ammonia: the Natural Stone Institute warns that the mixture creates toxic, potentially lethal gas.
Pressure washing
A pressure washer is not the default tool for a rock bed. High pressure can move loose stones, disturb soil, and damage softer or porous material. For fixed, hard paving, STIHL Australia advises starting at low pressure and testing first; that advice does not establish a safe setting for every stone or loose-rock installation.

- DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Attach hose to bottle, ensure it is in the "OFF" position. Turn water on and rinse surrounding plants with water. Turn to "CLEAN" or "CLEAN+" and spray surface. Wait 10 minutes and then rinse surface and surrounding plants again.
Protect nearby plants and follow the cleaner’s label and local requirements for runoff. GSA cautions against spraying near unprotected people, landscaping, and animals. A hose with a fine-spray nozzle is a more controlled starting option than a pressure washer for gentle rinsing.

Persistent rust, deep staining, or a visibly etched surface may not respond to routine washing. The Natural Stone Institute notes that deep-seated rust can be especially difficult to remove and that some etching may require refinishing. If the stone is valuable, the mark is deep, or the material is uncertain, get a stone-specific recommendation before trying a stronger product. Cleaning removes soil and some stains; it does not necessarily recreate a polished surface.
