No homemade weed killer works everywhere: vinegar and boiling water mainly damage the plant parts they touch, so established weeds can grow back. For small weeds in isolated hardscape cracks, carefully applied vinegar or boiling water may help; salt mixtures can harm soil and nearby plants, so they are not a safe all-purpose option. For many small annual weeds, hand-pulling or cultivation before they set seed is a practical alternative.
Quick comparison
| Method | Best fit | What it does | Main limits and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinegar | Small, young weeds where spray can be kept off wanted plants | Contact treatment that damages touched plant tissue | Roots may survive; it is non-selective. Stronger acetic acid can be caustic. |
| Boiling water | Young weeds in isolated patio or sidewalk cracks | Scalds the contacted portions of a plant | Can burn people and wanted plants; deep-rooted weeds and grasses may regrow. |
| Salt mixture | No broad garden-bed use is recommended | Salt can dry contacted plant tissue | Repeated use can accumulate salt and make soil harmful to wanted plants. |
| Hand-pulling or cultivation | Small annual weeds in accessible beds | Removes or disturbs weeds before they set seed | Established perennial roots may require repeated or different control. |
| Mulch | Suppressing new weeds in beds after existing weeds are removed | Blocks light and helps prevent seeds from germinating | Less effective against established weeds that spread by rhizomes or stolons. |
1. Vinegar: a non-selective contact treatment
Household vinegar is typically 5% acetic acid. UConn Extension says vinegar damages the plant parts it contacts but does not reach the roots of an in-ground plant, so regrowth is possible. It also notes that at least 10% acetic acid is needed for effects beyond tiny seedlings. That is not a reason to improvise a concentrated mixture: stronger horticultural vinegar can be caustic and needs careful handling.
Vinegar is non-selective. Spray that reaches grass, flowers, vegetables or other wanted plants can damage them too. Soap, if added, acts as a surfactant to help a spray wet foliage; it is not the herbicide. Do not assume a homemade mixture is harmless because its ingredients are familiar. UConn Extension cautions that such recipes are still pesticides intended to kill weeds.
Use and safety
- Reserve vinegar for small weeds where you can avoid contact with desirable plants.
- Do not spray in windy conditions. Wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection, and keep children, pets and pollinators away until the solution dries.
- For commercial herbicide products, follow the product label. Do not treat a concentrated or labelled product as an ordinary pantry recipe.
2. Boiling water: for isolated cracks
Boiling water is most appropriate for young, newly emerged weeds in places such as patio or sidewalk cracks where wanted plants are not nearby. It kills contacted portions, but it does not reliably reach roots. Deep-rooted weeds and grasses are more likely to return, and one application often will not kill the entire plant.

Apply carefully
- Choose an isolated spot where hot water cannot splash onto people, wanted plants or other vulnerable surfaces.
- Pour precisely and close to the weed; Iowa State Extension suggests a tea kettle as one way to control the pour.
- Plan to check the area and, if needed, retreat in 7–10 days. Take particular care with deep-rooted or grassy weeds.
Boiling water can cause severe scalds. Do not use it where you cannot pour safely or keep it away from people and desirable plants.
3. Salt mixtures: a soil risk, not a garden-bed solution
Salt can dry plant tissue it contacts, but it can also accumulate in soil. UConn Extension warns that repeated applications can harm nearby wanted plants, and UC Extension cautions that accumulated salt can make soil difficult for most plants to survive in. A household ingredient is not automatically safe for soil or the environment.

Do not present a vinegar-and-salt mixture as a harmless improvement or use it as a general treatment for lawns or planting beds. The risk of lasting soil and non-target plant damage makes salt a poor choice wherever you want plants to grow.
Alternatives that often make more sense
For many annual weeds, hand-pulling or cultivation while plants are small is an effective option. Remove weeds before they produce seed. A hoe can help with seedling annual broadleaf weeds, but no single pass should be expected to eliminate every established perennial.

Mulch can help prevent new weed seeds from germinating. Remove established weeds first, then use mulch as a barrier. It is less effective against established weeds that spread through rhizomes or stolons, which may push through or around it.
Choosing a method
- Identify whether the weed is a small annual seedling or an established perennial. Rooted or spreading weeds are more likely to return after a contact treatment.
- Consider the setting. Vinegar and boiling water are risky near plants you want to keep; boiling water belongs only where you can pour precisely and safely.
- For small annual weeds in accessible beds, consider hand-pulling or cultivation before seed set. For beds with bare soil, remove existing weeds before using mulch to suppress new seedlings.
- Avoid salt where you want healthy soil and future plant growth. If you are considering a commercial herbicide, follow its label and seek local Extension guidance when weed identification or site conditions are uncertain.
FAQ
Is household vinegar effective as a weed killer?
It can damage small weeds it contacts, but it does not reach the roots of an in-ground plant, so regrowth is possible. It can also damage wanted plants it touches.

Does vinegar kill weeds permanently?
Not reliably. It is a contact treatment, and roots of established weeds may survive and produce new growth.
Is boiling water a good choice for sidewalk cracks?
It can be useful for young weeds in isolated cracks where no wanted plants are nearby. Pour precisely to avoid scalding people or damaging plants, and expect that some weeds may need another treatment.

Is a vinegar and salt weed-killer mixture safe for garden beds?
No. Salt can accumulate in soil and harm wanted plants. Do not treat it as a harmless way to strengthen vinegar, especially where you want future plant growth.
What can I use instead of a homemade spray?
For many annual weeds, hand-pulling or cultivation while the plants are small and before they set seed is practical. Mulch can suppress new seedlings after established weeds have been removed, though it may not control spreading perennial weeds.
