Extension tables put its heat output at roughly 20–22.6 million BTUs per cord, with generally low smoke, few sparks, and good coal quality. It gives less heat per cord than several oaks and hickory, so it is a useful option rather than a top-heat choice. The figures below refer specifically to black walnut (Juglans nigra), not every tree called walnut.
How much heat does walnut firewood provide?
Published extension tables place black walnut in a fairly consistent range, though the exact figure varies by source. These are reference values, not guarantees for every cord: moisture, how the cord is measured, and burning conditions affect the heat you get.
| Source | Black walnut heat value | Comparison from the same source |
|---|---|---|
| University of Illinois Extension, publication date not shown | 22.3 million BTUs per cord | Shagbark hickory: 28.6 million; white/bur oak: 26.5 million BTUs per cord |
| Utah State University Extension Forestry, publication date not shown | 22.2 million BTUs per cord | White oak: 29.1 million; black locust: 27.9 million; apple: 27.0 million BTUs per cord |
| Oklahoma State University Extension, publication date not shown | 20.0–22.6 million BTUs per cord | Not stated in the cited source |
| South Dakota State University Extension, updated 2021 | 22 million BTUs per cord | Not stated in the cited source |
The comparisons show why walnut is best described as moderate in heat output: it can serve well in a wood stove or fireplace, but a cord generally contains less potential heat than the cited oak and hickory options. Values are from the University of Illinois Extension, Utah State University Extension Forestry, Oklahoma State University Extension, and South Dakota State University Extension.
What is walnut like to burn?
Reference tables describe several practical strengths, but individual results depend on whether the wood is dry, the size of the pieces, airflow, and how the appliance is operated.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Bold & Hearty Smoke – Delivers rich, robust flavor for wood-fired pizzas, ribs, brisket, red meat, and game—perfect alone or blended for a custom taste.
- Kiln-Dried for Enhanced Performance – PDA-certified premium firewood dried to 15% moisture or less for quick ignition, efficient heat, and a clean, low-smoke burn.
- Ideal Size & Weight – 39.5 lb of firewood is bundled into 30–35 evenly sized 8-inch splits, pre-cut, portable, easy to store, and ready to use straight from the box for pizza ovens, grills, and smokers.
- Steady, Long-Lasting Intense Heat – Delivers high, consistent heat with minimal popping or smoke—ideal for crispy wood-fired pizza crusts, plus grills, smokers, fire pits, and campfires.
- Sustainably Harvested & Processed in the USA – Sourced from certified American forests and processed in Myerstown, PA. 100% natural, eco-friendly hardwood, crafted for premium cooking, smoking and firewood use.
- Starting: Illinois Extension describes black walnut as difficult to start. Build the fire with suitable kindling and established fuel before adding walnut.
- Splitting: Utah State Extension rates it easy to split, which can make processing more manageable.
- Smoke and sparks: The cited tables generally report low smoke and few or no sparks. That does not eliminate the need for a fireplace screen or safe stove operation.
- Coals and fragrance: Utah State describes its coal formation and fragrance as good, and rates its overall quality highly.
How dry should walnut firewood be?
Burn walnut only after it has seasoned adequately. Illinois Extension recommends firewood below 20% moisture and says fresh wood usually needs at least six to nine months to reach that level. Oklahoma State Extension also advises planning six to nine months ahead and gives 10–20% as the ideal moisture range for ready-to-burn wood. These are planning guides, not a fixed guarantee that every log will be ready on schedule.
Stack wood so air can circulate and protect it from rain. Check the actual moisture rather than relying only on elapsed time: wet wood gives less useful heat and produces more smoke and creosote. A moisture reading in the recommended range is a better readiness check than the calendar alone.

- Perfect: Tiny splits measure approximately 5 inches long and .5-2 inches wide. Ideal for cooking in ooni pizza oven, gozney roccbox, solo stove pizza oven, and heating with mini solo stove.
- Premium Kiln Dried Hardwood: quick ignite and burns hot! Temp varies from 750-1000° F. Lower moisture creates ideal cooking wood and smoker wood. Kiln dried firewood is free from mold and pests.
- Maximum Quantity: Each box is neatly hand stack to the brim. When you buy a box from us it means you are getting a genuine box full.
- Taste the Outdoors: on your dinner plate with our premium cooking wood. Cook your favorite pizza, thin crust pizza, mini pizza, meats, veggies, and more. Our favorite is panseared burgers and zucchini.
- All Natural and Sustainable: Our firewood is sourced from state forester managed timber in Northwest PA. Our kilns are fueled with virgin recycled waste wood vs the less environmentally friendly fossil fuels.
How does walnut compare with other firewood?
Heat output is only one part of the choice. Walnut’s cited heat values are lower than the listed white oak and shagbark hickory values, while Utah State’s table marks walnut as easy to split, low in smoke, and good for coals. If maximum heat per cord is the priority and those other woods are available, the cited tables favor oak or hickory; if walnut is what you have, properly seasoned wood remains a useful fuel.
Should a good walnut log be firewood?
Not necessarily. The USDA Forest Service says black walnut is durable and workable, with principal uses including furniture, cabinets, interior finishes, and veneer. A sound, high-quality log may be worth considering for lumber rather than cutting it into fuel. Suitability depends on the particular log, and the cited source does not establish local prices or mean every walnut tree should be milled. See the USDA Forest Service overview of black walnut.

Burn walnut safely
Walnut does not exempt a chimney or fireplace from routine care. Illinois Extension advises annual chimney inspection and cleaning because creosote is highly flammable. Use a screen with an open fireplace, and put cooled ashes in a lidded metal container outdoors. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s operating instructions and local fire-safety guidance.
