How to Kerf Bend Wood: A Practical Guide to Cuts, Setup, and Safe Bending

Kerf bending uses parallel cuts on the inside face of a board to create a curve. Learn how to test the pattern, control cut depth and spacing, and bend safely.

Kerf bending makes wood flexible by cutting a series of parallel slots into the face that will become the inside of a curve. The slots close as the piece bends, while an uncut layer on the opposite face holds the ribs together. Test the cut pattern on scrap from the same stock before cutting the final piece: depth, spacing, material, and target radius all affect whether it bends smoothly or breaks.

How kerf bending works

Each kerf removes material and reduces stiffness. As the board bends, the cuts on its inside face compress; the continuous outer web remains intact and forms the visible outside surface. The inside will show the repeated ribs, so account for that appearance in the finished project.

Kerf bending is one way to form a curve, alongside steaming solid stock and glue-laminating thin strips around a form. It avoids steam equipment and laminating many strips, but it removes material and does not preserve the strength of uncut stock. WOOD Magazine explains these methods and the kerf-bending mechanism in its kerf-bending guide.

Plan the bend and choose the stock

Mark which face will be inside the curve, the intended bend zone, and how you will support and secure the piece once bent. The stock’s thickness and construction, along with the curve you want, determine the cutting pattern; there is no universal kerf depth or spacing that guarantees a particular radius.

Both solid wood and plywood can be kerf-bent, but they do not behave identically. Plywood construction affects how the panel bends. For the bending-cut application it describes, Trotec advises cutting in the grain direction in solid wood and warns that cross-grain cuts can make it more prone to breaking and less bendable. Treat that as material-specific advice, not a rule for every pattern. See Trotec’s guidance on bending cuts.

Set kerf depth and spacing with a test piece

Before cutting the project part, make test cuts in scrap from the same stock. Bend each test around the intended form, checking whether it curves smoothly and whether the outer web stays intact. Adjust depth or spacing and test again rather than relying on a dimension from a different material or project. WOOD Magazine specifically recommends test pieces and cautions that cuts placed too close together can weaken the part.

Modelcraft Plank Bending Tool with Spare Blades, 180mm
  • Plank bending tool with 2 spare blades
  • For thickness over 2mm, stainless steel
  • Please use (PTK3030) plank bending tool for thickness over 1mm
  • Ideal for bending planking strips to the desired curvature
  • Excellent price with 2 blades, planking tool & plastic blade holder
  • Deeper cuts make bending easier but leave a thinner outer web, raising the risk of cutting through or breaking the piece.
  • Shallower cuts preserve more of the web but may resist a tight curve.
  • Closer spacing can distribute the bend more smoothly, but adds cuts and removes more material.
  • Wider spacing preserves more stock but may leave the curve visibly faceted.

The appropriate compromise depends on the stock and the curve. A plywood kerf-bending walkthrough from WoodWorkers Guild of America discusses repeatable depth and supported cutting: How to Bend Plywood the Easy Way.

Cut consistent, parallel kerfs

Use a stable setup that suits the size of the workpiece. A table saw is one option; a guided circular saw or another controlled setup may be more suitable for a large panel. Prioritize reliable depth control, full support, and consistent spacing rather than assuming one saw is right for every job.

  1. Set the cut depth. Adjust the tool so each cut leaves a continuous outer web. Check the setting on scrap before cutting the workpiece.
  2. Set the spacing. Use a fence or indexing jig to repeat the spacing accurately. A table-saw kerf-spacing jig is useful only if it matches the saw and workpiece.
  3. Support and secure the stock. Keep it stable throughout each cut; do not make an unstable or unsupported cut.
  4. Cut parallel slots across the bend zone. Keep depth and spacing consistent, and stop to inspect the cuts if the setup shifts.
  5. Test the bend before proceeding. If the curve is faceted, the pattern may not distribute the bend smoothly. If the outer face cracks or the web breaks, the depth, spacing, material, or target curve may be unsuitable.

Bend around a form and secure the result

A form helps guide the workpiece into a consistent curve. Bend the test piece first to confirm the pattern behaves as intended, then use the form to shape and hold the project piece. Consider how the finished part will be fixed in place; a glued backer or other reinforcement may be appropriate for some projects, but it does not make every kerf-bent part suitable for structural use.

Safety and strength limits

Follow the tool manufacturer’s manual, keep guards and safety devices in place, and secure and support the workpiece. The hazards and controls depend on the machine and setup. OSHA’s router guidance identifies flying chips and kickback as router hazards; it is not a complete safety procedure for table-saw kerfing. Consult it for router-specific context: OSHA woodworking router hazards.

Kerf cuts reduce strength, and the remaining outer web is a critical failure point. General cutting guidance cannot establish a load rating or minimum safe bend radius. Do not rely on kerf-cut stock alone for load-bearing or safety-critical work; use a design suited to the loads and seek qualified guidance where needed.
