The right choice depends less on a headline horsepower figure than on depth control, plunge handling, table access and accessory compatibility. Published tests offer useful historical comparisons, but they are not current retests or proof that one model is best today.
What a multi-base router kit lets you do
The motor is the shared power unit; the base determines how it is supported and adjusted. In a typical kit, the same motor fits both a fixed base and a plunge base. That gives a woodworker more than one way to guide the cutter while avoiding a second motor.
Fixed base: controlled edge work and table setups
A fixed base holds the motor at a set cutting depth once adjusted. Its generally compact form suits routing along an edge or template, and it is often the more practical base for a router-table installation. Table use still depends on the particular router and accessories: check how the motor is secured, whether height adjustment and bit changes are accessible from above, and whether the switch can be reached once installed.
Plunge base: cuts that begin inside the workpiece
A plunge base lets you lower the running bit into the work and raise it at the end of the cut. That makes it useful for cuts that do not start at an edge, such as stopped grooves. Fine Woodworking’s historical combo-kit comparison describes this functional distinction; it is a general difference between base designs, not a claim that every plunge mechanism handles equally well. What published tests say—and what they do not
The available comparisons are historical evidence, not a fresh side-by-side test of current retail models. WOOD Magazine’s “Shop Tested: Midsize Multi-Base Routers” discusses practical differences involving switches, turret stops, plunge adjustment, above-table adjustment and accessory compatibility. Its page does not provide a reliable original publication date, so its observations should not be assigned a date that the publication has not established. The models named include Bosch 1617EVSPK and MRC23EVSK, DEWALT DW618B3, Makita RF1101KIT2, Metabo HPT KM12VC, and models from Milwaukee, Porter-Cable, Hercules and Skil. WOOD Magazine’s midsize multi-base router test
A separate WOOD Magazine combo-pack review says it tested 12 kits in a comparison originally published in the July 2008 issue; the page was updated March 6, 2025. Its coverage includes Bosch, Craftsman, DEWALT, Freud, Hitachi, Makita, Milwaukee, Porter-Cable, Ridgid and Skil. The review describes the format’s versatility and potential cost advantage over separate bases, but its historic price comparison is not current pricing. WOOD Magazine’s combo-pack review

For category context, Fine Woodworking’s 2014 test evaluated eight midsize fixed-base routers rated from 1-3/4 to 2-3/10 hp. It assessed smoothness of cut, control and handling, accuracy, grip comfort, ease of handling and bit changes. That fixed-base test is not a comprehensive evaluation of every combo kit now sold. How to compare the details that affect real work
Depth adjustment and stops
Check how each base sets coarse depth, whether it offers fine adjustment, and whether that fine adjustment remains reachable with the plunge lock engaged. A depth stop or turret can make repeated stepped depths easier, but the useful question is whether its adjustment is precise and convenient for the cuts you make.

Plunge feel and lock behavior
When possible, assess whether the plunge action moves smoothly and whether the lock is easy to operate without disturbing your grip. WOOD’s comparison notes that reviewers did not agree on whether a router should default to locked or free-plunge operation. Treat that choice as a handling preference, and consider which state feels safer and more natural for your work habits.
Grip, balance, switch and visibility
Grip comfort and balance matter when guiding a router over a long edge or controlling a plunge. Look at switch placement, how easily you can see the cut line, and whether the controls remain reachable with either base fitted. Fine Woodworking’s 2014 test included handling, control, accuracy and grip comfort among its criteria; WOOD’s combo-kit comparison also discusses switch placement and handling differences.
Rank #4
- 2-1/4 HP (maximum motor HP), 12.0 Amp electronic variable speed motor provides the power to rout smoothly through the toughest hardwoods
- Electronic variable speed with full feedback control for constant speed under load from 8,000-24,000 rpm and soft start to reduce start-up torque for enhanced control

- Quick release motor latches for fast and easy motor pack removal for bit and base changes
Router-table access
If you expect to use the fixed base in a table, investigate the exact installation rather than assuming the kit makes above-table work simple. Confirm whether you can adjust cutting height, reach the switch, change bits and remove the motor while the base is mounted. Above-table adjustment is a feature of some arrangements, not a universal property of multi-base routers.
Collets and accessories
Before buying bits, guide bushings, edge guides or table accessories, verify compatibility with the motor, collet and specific base. A kit’s ability to accept accessories depends on its design; do not assume a bushing or guide that fits one router will fit another. WOOD’s test highlights accessory compatibility as a comparison point, but does not make every accessory universal.

A practical way to choose
- List your main cuts. If you regularly start cuts within a panel, make sure the plunge base feels controlled and its depth stops suit the work. For edge profiling or a table, prioritize fixed-base handling and installation access.
- Try the controls if possible. Check plunge smoothness, lock position, switch reach, grip and visibility with the tool configured as you will use it.
- Map your table workflow. Confirm whether motor removal, height changes, bit changes and switching are manageable in the table arrangement you intend to build.
- Check every accessory against the exact model. Verify collet size, guide-bushing fit, edge-guide compatibility and table hardware before purchasing add-ons.
- Compare current offers and kit contents. The historical tests do not verify present-day prices, stock or included accessories. Compare the actual package available in your region rather than relying on old rankings or price references.
