A mini pond can fit on a patio, balcony or small garden and still offer water and shelter for wildlife. Choose a vessel that holds water, position it before filling, provide an easy way in and out, then add a few compact plants suited to its depth. The steps below draw on UK guidance from the RHS and The Wildlife Trusts; plant hardiness and invasive-species rules vary by region, so check local advice before buying or sharing aquatic plants.
Choose a container that will hold water
A reclaimed sink, half-barrel, large tub, washing-up bowl or large plant pot can work. Look for enough depth and surface area for the plants you want, and consider the footprint and how the container will look in its setting. The Wildlife Trusts suggests aiming for about 20–30 cm (8 in–1 ft) of water depth for a mini pond. The RHS also gives 20–30 cm as a minimum for a few plants in its container-pond guidance.
Check for cracks, drainage holes or other leaks before you fill it. If the vessel is not watertight, line it with a flexible pond liner. Put it in its final position while empty: even a modest container can become too heavy to move safely once filled. See the RHS container pond guide and The Wildlife Trusts’ mini pond guide for build guidance.
Find a bright, safe position
Choose a spot that gets light but is not in direct sun all day. Some sunshine helps pond plants, while partial shade can reduce overheating and algae problems. Think about how easy the pond will be to see and maintain, and take particular care where young children may be present. For a small space where an open pond could pose a risk, the RHS suggests considering a thin-film birdbath or bubble fountain instead.

- [Safety Material] Koi Pond Liner is made of HDPE material, it has good softness, extensibility, 20 mil thickness liner is UV and puncture resistant, contains no plasticizers that can be used in outdoor ponds for a long time.
- [Easy Cutting] This fish pond liner has durable yet lightweight, easy to install and bend, stretched around corners to fit nearly any pond shape. You can cut it to the size you want to fit all irregular surfaces.
- [Protect the Pond] Black Pond Liner can well block soil and water. It prevents dirty substances in the soil from entering the pond and provides a good living environment for the animals and plants in the pond.
- [Wide Application] Thick pond liner has waterproof and anti-leakage function. It can be adapted to ponds of various sizes with narrow corners, contours and shelves. The pond underlayment is perfect for fish ponds, fountains, waterfalls and water gardens.
- [Please Note] Pond Liner under layment provides a flat surface for your gardenpond. Due to the high water pressure after injection, you can clean the area and add a layer of round pebbles before using. Avoid hard things affecting the life of pond liner.
Read the RHS advice on wildlife ponds and water habitats when weighing site and safety choices.
Make it easy for wildlife to enter and leave
Wildlife needs a route out as well as a way in. Set large stones, bricks or logs inside the container to create shallow ledges and a route up from deeper water. If the pond stands above ground, provide an outside ramp too. A grooved piece of wood or timber covered with chicken wire can give small animals a better grip. Add nearby cover with plants, rocks or logs.

Fill with rainwater and plant lightly
Use rainwater if available. The RHS warns that tap water can add nutrients that encourage algae. Leave enough room for plants to grow, rather than filling the surface at the outset: the RHS container guide suggests three to five plants, while The Wildlife Trusts says one or two may be enough. The right number depends on the container and how vigorous the plants are, so start with a few compact choices.
Choose species for your container’s depth, mature size and local conditions. The RHS mini-pond guide gives these examples:

The Wildlife Trusts also lists starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) and flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus). These are examples, not a universal plant list: check that a plant suits your climate and is not restricted or invasive where you live. The RHS’s pond plant selection guidance covers matching plants to pond size, planting depth and spread. It advises aiming for foliage over about half the surface, including oxygenating plants and avoiding potentially invasive choices.
Planting method and timing
Many aquatic plants are best planted in baskets using loam-based or aquatic compost. Check the required planting depth for each species rather than placing every basket at the bottom. The RHS identifies mid-spring to early summer, once the water has warmed, as a good planting period. Its aquatic planting guide explains basket planting and depth.

Let the pond develop naturally
Do not move frogs, fish, frogspawn or water from another pond into yours. The Wildlife Trusts warns that transfers can spread disease, and the RHS also advises against importing pond water or animals. Give wildlife time to find the pond on its own. What arrives will depend on the site, nearby habitat, weather and time; a particular animal cannot be guaranteed.
Keep up simple maintenance
Check the water level in hot or dry weather and top it up, using rainwater if possible. Remove fallen or fading leaves, and scoop out algae or pond weed if it starts to take over. A pump or filter is not required for a wildlife pond. The RHS mentions a mini bubble fountain as an optional way to oxygenate water; if you use a pump in a larger or adapted pond, choose wildlife protection to help prevent small animals being drawn in. See the RHS guidance on wildlife ponds and its container pond care advice.
