There is no single winter thermostat setting that is best for every home: the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says people may choose the temperature that suits them. For energy savings, DOE’s 2022 guide suggests lowering the setting by 7–10°F for 8 hours a day in fall and winter; for cold-weather travel, the American Red Cross advises leaving the heat on at no lower than 55°F to help protect pipes.
These are adaptable recommendations, not guarantees. Your comfort, heating equipment, and the location and exposure of your plumbing all matter.
How to Choose a Winter Thermostat Setting
Start with a temperature that is comfortable for the people in your home, then consider whether a scheduled setback suits your routine and heating system. DOE’s 2019 statement says Americans should set thermostats to whatever temperature they choose; its energy-saving advice is an option for people who want to reduce energy use, not a mandatory comfort setting.
According to DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver: Tips on Saving Money and Energy in Your Home, lowering the thermostat by 7–10°F for 8 hours a day in fall and winter can save as much as 10% per year on heating and cooling. DOE presents this as potential savings, not a guaranteed result for every household.

When to Use a Setback
A setback may suit times when the home is regularly unoccupied or people are asleep. A compatible programmable thermostat can automate a schedule. Choose a schedule that works for your household, and confirm that the thermostat is designed for your heating equipment.
Heat-pump owners should take particular care: DOE’s 2022 guide says not to use the setback advice without a smart or programmable thermostat designed for heat pumps. Check the thermostat’s compatibility with your system before setting a schedule.

What to Do When You Leave in Cold Weather
For an absence during cold weather, the American Red Cross advises leaving the heat on and setting the thermostat no lower than 55°F. It also advises keeping the thermostat at the same temperature day and night to help avoid frozen pipes. This is prevention guidance, not a guarantee that pipes will not freeze or a universal code requirement.
Pipe-freezing risk depends on conditions in the home. The Red Cross identifies pipes exposed to severe cold and pipes in unheated areas—such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and kitchen cabinets—as vulnerable. Pipes along poorly insulated exterior walls are also at risk.

- · High Compatibility: Forced air (gas, oil or electric), Electric furnace, Hot water steam or gravity radiant heat, Heat only systems, Heat pump w/o auxiliary or emergency heat, Millivolt, Gas fireplaces (24V), Floor or wall furnaces, Cool only systems.(TIP: Before purchasing, check to see if this thermostat is compatible with your system.)
- · Not Compatible: Heat pump with auxiliary or emergency heat, Dual fuel/hybrid heating, Electric baseboard heat (110-240 volts), Line voltage, Convectors, Radiant-ceiling heat, Mini split systems and 12V RV systems.
- · Easy to Install and Use: Large terminal blocks with universal sub-base, can be installed within 30 minutes, Large, clear, easy-to-read backlight LCD display and easy controls make for a user-friendly experience.

- · Reliability: Made by professional manufacturer and backed by over 20 years of experience, the customer service is 7*24 hrs available.
For vulnerable plumbing, consider insulating exposed pipes and improving insulation in the areas where they run. The Red Cross identifies pipe sleeves and listed heat tape or heat cable as options to consider. A thermostat setting alone cannot ensure that every pipe is protected.
Thermostat Options for Scheduled Setbacks
A programmable thermostat can put a setback schedule into practice, but compatibility with your heating system comes first. DOE specifically cautions heat-pump owners to use a smart or programmable thermostat designed for heat pumps before following its setback advice.
