Use the steps below to improve washing and drying, then troubleshoot based on whether one item or several loads smell.
14 ways to make laundry smell better

Wash odor-bearing items promptly
Leaving wet or sweaty clothes in a closed washer or sealed hamper can allow stale, musty odors to linger. If you cannot wash them right away, avoid storing them damp in an enclosed space.

Separate especially sweaty or soiled pieces
Wash gym wear, towels and heavily soiled items separately when needed. This can make it easier to choose a suitable cycle without crowding the load.

Do not overload the washer
Clothes need room to move through the wash. Follow the machine’s instructions for load size; a tightly packed drum can make it harder to wash items thoroughly.

Measure detergent according to its label
Use the amount recommended for your load and conditions, and choose detergent intended for your machine type. Adding extra detergent is not automatically a better way to remove odor.

Choose a fabric-safe water temperature
A warmer wash may suit durable items if their care labels allow it. Do not exceed the garment’s temperature or care instructions.

Select a cycle suited to the soil level
Use a cycle appropriate for the fabric and how soiled it is. A short or delicate cycle may not be the right choice for heavily soiled laundry.

Consider an extra rinse if residue is suspected
An extra rinse may help remove leftover wash solution when the garment and machine permit it. It does not replace correct detergent dosing.

Pretreat persistent sweat odor
Use a fabric-compatible pretreatment or soak only as its label directs, then wash the garment normally according to its care instructions.

Move clothes out of the washer promptly
Transfer washed items to the dryer or clothesline soon after the cycle ends rather than leaving them sitting wet in the drum.

Dry every item completely
Make sure thick towels, seams, waistbands and pockets are dry before folding or storing laundry. Airing or fully drying a garment is a source-removal approach, unlike adding fragrance alone. The EPA Safer Choice FAQ discusses the role of washing and airing in odor removal.

Air items when their care labels allow
Ventilation can help odors dissipate. Avoid sunlight or heat for garments whose care labels prohibit them.

Check the washer if multiple loads smell
If odor recurs across different loads, consider whether it is coming from the machine. A 2013 study by Stapleton, Hill, Day, Perry and Dean assessed malodor in four washing machines over 52 hours and investigated possible odor transfer to fabric. Those figures describe the study design; they do not show that every smelly load comes from a washer.

Maintain the washer according to its manual
Clean the drum, detergent drawer, filter and seals only as directed for your model. If the manufacturer permits, leave the door or lid open between uses so moisture can escape. EPA mold guidance advises addressing moisture and drying cleaned hard surfaces completely; it is general household guidance, not a laundry-specific treatment protocol.

Use an odor-treatment rinse additive only if needed
A rinse-cycle odor-treatment product is an option for persistent smells after you have checked washing, drying and the machine. An EPA-hosted product label documents this type of laundry use, but does not endorse a brand or establish a best product. Check the current product label and garment instructions for dosage and use.
Find the source by the pattern
- One garment smells, but the rest of the load does not: Check that item’s care instructions and try a compatible pretreatment or rewash. Soil or odor retention may be specific to the garment.
- Many garments smell after one wash: Check the load size, detergent amount, cycle choice and how long the clothes sat damp after washing.
- Several loads smell musty: Inspect the washer and address persistent moisture. The 2013 study investigated washer malodor and possible transfer, while EPA guidance recommends correcting moisture and drying cleaned hard surfaces.
- The odor returns after drying or storage: Check that items dried fully and that the storage area is dry and ventilated. If the smell persists, revisit the source instead of adding more fragrance.
Choose an odor remedy that fits the problem
Start with the likely source. Detergent is for washing soil from garments; washer maintenance addresses a machine that may be contributing odor; a rinse-cycle additive is an optional treatment for persistent odors. Check garment and product directions and where in the cycle a product is meant to be used. Fragrance can make laundry smell stronger without removing the underlying cause.

Use laundry products safely
- Follow the garment, washer, detergent and treatment labels; directions vary by fabric and machine.
- Never mix bleach and ammonia. The EPA Safer Choice FAQ warns that combining them generates toxic chloramine gas.
- Do not assume vinegar, baking soda or another homemade mixture will work for every fabric, washer or odor. EPA says homemade cleaners typically do not perform as well as formulated commercial products and can present hazards if misused.
- For extensive mold or water damage at home, EPA advises seeking professional advice rather than treating it as a laundry problem alone.
