Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If you want to reduce conventional road salt, the best option depends on whether you need to melt ice or simply improve traction. Calcium magnesium acetate is a non-chloride deicer; calcium and magnesium chloride are colder-weather substitutes that still contain chloride; beet-derived products are generally additives to brine or salt; and sand provides grip without melting ice. None is a harmless, universal replacement. For a home walkway or driveway, clear snow first, then use only the treatment suited to the pavement conditions and the job.
What “road salt alternative” means
Road salt usually means sodium chloride. Alternatives may replace it with another chemical, reduce how much salt is needed, or avoid melting chemicals altogether. Those approaches are not interchangeable: an abrasive can help prevent slips without thawing ice, while a deicer’s effectiveness depends on the pavement temperature and the product’s instructions.
Minnesota guidance offers a useful illustration, not a universal temperature chart: sodium chloride works very slowly below 15°F pavement temperature and not at all below -6°F, its eutectic temperature, according to Minnesota LTAP. Air temperature alone does not tell you whether a deicer will work on a particular surface. Follow the temperature range on the product label.
Four alternatives, compared
| Option | Melts ice? | Chloride? | Best use and key tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) | Yes; a chemical deicer | No | A non-chloride alternative to sodium chloride. It has different environmental tradeoffs and may cost more; the sources do not establish a universal cost or performance advantage. |
| Calcium chloride or magnesium chloride | Yes; chemical deicers | Yes | Used where sodium chloride is less effective in colder conditions. Still introduces chloride and can affect vehicles and infrastructure. |
| Beet-derived additive | Not reliably on its own | Usually used with salt or brine | May help brine or salt stick and can affect freezing point. It is an additive, not a dependable stand-alone ice melter. |
| Sand or another abrasive | No | No | Adds temporary traction when melting is not the goal or chemicals are unsuitable. It needs cleanup and can enter drains and waterways. |
1. Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA)
CMA is the clearest fit if you specifically want a chemical deicer without chloride. The Minnesota Stormwater Manual discusses acetate deicers, including CMA, and their environmental effects; “non-chloride” does not mean impact-free. The material also may carry a cost premium, though the available guidance does not establish a standard price comparison. See the manual’s discussion of chloride and acetate deicers.

- Long-Lasting Protection: Time-relaxed formula stays in place longer, providing extended freeze/thaw control for better safety, efficiency, coverage, durability, reliability, and performance.
- Residue-Free & Non-Tracking: Leaves no slimy mess and won’t track onto floors, carpets, rugs, tiles, wood, or laminate—keeping your home clean, safer, and damage-free.
- Easy & Visible Application: Green-coated crystals let you see where you've spread the product, ensuring precise, efficient, cost-effective, even, controlled, and accurate use.
For a home project, check the exact product’s ingredients, temperature range, and application directions. CMA products are not interchangeable with every product marketed as “ice melt.”
2. Calcium chloride or magnesium chloride
Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are chemical deicers, not salt-free solutions. MnDOT says it uses calcium chloride or magnesium chloride at lower temperatures; that does not mean every formulation works at every temperature. Check the label and the pavement conditions rather than assuming a product will melt ice because the air feels cold. MnDOT’s maintenance FAQ describes its practices.
Rank #2
- Effective Winter Companion: Melts ice and snow at temperatures as low as -15-degree Fahrenheit, with a 100 percent salt- and chloride-free formula that's safe for pets, plants, and the environment.
- Pet-Safe Melter: Specially crafted with a pet-conscious formula to protect your furry friends from ingestion or paw discomfort, making it a perfect choice for pet-friendly households.
- Traction-Enhancing: Includes a traction agent that improves grip and prevents slips and falls on icy surfaces, keeping your family members and pets safe.
- Longer-Lasting Performance: Use less and achieve great results as this provides 3 times longer-lasting coverage versus the traditional rock salt, reducing the need for frequent reapplication.
- Versatile Application: Can be used on sidewalks, driveways, and other concrete surfaces to quickly clear away ice and snow, providing a safe path.
These products still add chloride to the environment. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency cautions that chloride salts can be more damaging to vehicles and infrastructure. They should not be described as harmless to concrete, metal, plants, pets, or water simply because they differ from sodium chloride. See the agency’s salt and sand alternatives guidance.
3. Beet-derived brine additives
Beet juice, molasses, and similar carbohydrate-rich materials are generally mixed with brine or salt. An additive may help the treatment adhere to a surface and may influence its freezing point, but beet material alone is not a reliable ice melter. The Minnesota Stormwater Manual states that carbohydrates alone do not melt snow or ice and notes potential water-quality effects when organic matter reaches waterways. Its deicer guidance explains those tradeoffs.

“Plant-based” is not proof that a product is safe for a yard, pets, or waterways. Use the full mixture according to its label, and keep it out of storm drains and water.
4. Sand for traction
Sand is for grip, not melting. MnDOT puts it plainly: “Sand doesn’t have any ice melting properties.” See its maintenance FAQ. It can help on a slick walkway when a deicer is not appropriate or effective, but the ice will remain beneath it.

Apply sparingly, especially near drains. Runoff can carry sediment into waterways, where it can harm water quality, and accumulated material can obstruct drainage. Sweep up what remains when conditions allow. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency discusses these concerns in its salt and sand alternatives guidance.

For snow-covered pavement
Remove snow mechanically before applying a deicer. Clearing first reduces the amount of material needed and exposes the ice or pavement the product is meant to treat. Avoid applying more than the label directs.

For thin ice in a suitable temperature range
Choose a deicer whose label covers the pavement temperature. CMA avoids chloride; calcium or magnesium chloride may be used in colder conditions than sodium chloride, but remains a chloride treatment. Neither choice eliminates environmental or infrastructure impacts.
When melting is not practical or traction is the priority
Use a modest amount of sand for temporary grip, understanding that it will not remove the ice. Keep it from accumulating at entrances, drains, and pavement edges, and sweep it up where practical.
Use less and keep treatments out of drainage
- Clear snow before spreading a deicer or abrasive.
- Use the smallest amount called for by the product label and its specified temperature range.
- Keep treatments away from storm drains, waterways, pets, and vulnerable plants.
- Do not rely on a generic “pet-safe” or “environmentally safe” claim without evidence for that specific product and use.
- Limit sand and sweep it up before it washes into drainage systems.
The scale of salt use helps explain why application matters. The Minnesota Stormwater Manual reports estimates of 403,600 tons per season for Minnesota and 249,100 tons for the Twin Cities metro area, citing Overbo et al.; the accessible excerpt does not state the estimate year. These are regional estimates, not national totals. See the manual’s deicer page.
