The most practical places to find firewood are local dealers, sellers near your campground, and public or community programs with current permits. Compare the full cost and wood details—not just the advertised price—and check where the wood came from. For camping, buy near the place you plan to burn it: moving firewood can spread pests and disease, and transport rules vary by location.
Where to look for firewood
Local dealers and community sellers
Start with nearby firewood dealers, roadside sellers, and local community listings. Victoria’s consumer guidance notes that firewood may be sold through social media, roadside stalls, and word of mouth. It recommends asking, “Where does your wood come from?” Ask for business details or a receipt, too. A listing with no clear source or seller information makes it harder to judge what you are buying.
Campgrounds, parks, and nearby private sellers
If you are camping, check the destination’s official website or contact the campground to ask whether firewood is sold on site. Some parks and campgrounds offer local wood, while gathering wood is prohibited in many parks. Private sellers near your destination may also deliver locally. Florida’s agriculture agency advises buying aged firewood after reaching your destination and burning it there: “Buy Local, Burn Local.”
Public-land permits and local programs
Search the current website of the state, province, county, or land manager for firewood or fuelwood permits. Conditions can specify which land is open, who qualifies, how much wood may be collected, and whether it must be for personal use.

- Michigan: The Department of Natural Resources’ 2026 program charges $20 per household for a permit on selected state-managed lands. It allows up to five standard cords, with a higher limit in specified counties; collection is restricted to dead and downed trees within 200 feet of a road. The wood is for personal use and may not be sold or traded. Check the program’s current rules and locations before collecting.
- British Columbia: The province describes a free-use permit for qualifying personal-use firewood collection on Crown land. The permit is district-specific, and collection is limited to dead or downed trees. Review the district requirements and permit terms.
- Atlantic County, New Jersey: The county lists a homeowners firewood program intended to provide residents with an inexpensive wood source. Its permit costs $25 per vehicle load, subject to program supply and conditions. Check the county program page for current availability and requirements.
These are examples of local program terms, not comparable market prices or a national estimate. Municipal and county public-works or parks pages may list other programs, but availability and conditions are local.
Private property
Collect wood from private property only with the owner’s permission. A permit issued for one land manager or property does not authorize collection somewhere else.

How to compare sellers
There is no single nationwide price or grading standard established for these sources. Ask each seller to explain the quantity and condition in their own listing, and compare the total delivered cost.
- Price: Confirm whether delivery is included and whether there are extra fees.
- Quantity: Ask exactly how the amount is measured; do not assume different sellers use the same measure.
- Condition and intended use: Ask whether the wood is seasoned or aged and suitable for your use. Request the species if it matters to you.
- Origin and documentation: Ask where the wood was cut and whether the seller can provide business details or a receipt.
- Distance: Prefer wood sourced near where it will be burned, especially when buying for a trip.
What “free firewood” really means
Free collection usually comes with conditions, and “free” does not necessarily mean no permit fee. Michigan’s 2026 program, for example, charges $20 per household for a permit; British Columbia’s described personal-use permit is free, but still applies only under district rules. A county program may charge a separate fee, as Atlantic County does for its vehicle-load permit.

Before making a trip, confirm eligibility, current supply, season, collection area, allowed quantity, and tree condition. Check whether access or equipment is restricted, and whether the wood must be used personally. A personal-use permit does not grant permission to sell or trade the wood, cut standing trees, enter private land, or ignore a fire ban.

Firewood can carry invasive insects and tree diseases. State agencies advise buying close to where you will burn it and leaving it there. Minnesota’s guidance calls this “buying firewood close to where you will burn it.” Check current quarantine, certification, and transport rules for both your starting point and destination; some places restrict or regulate firewood movement. For camping, buy near the destination and burn the wood there rather than transporting it onward.
