A splitter and a riving knife both sit behind a table-saw blade to help keep the cut kerf from closing onto the blade. The key difference is how they move: a conventional splitter is generally fixed relative to the table or guard, while a riving knife moves with the blade assembly and stays below the blade’s top. The right setup depends on the saw and the cut; neither device eliminates kickback risk.
How a splitter and a riving knife differ
On a table saw, the kerf is the slot left by the blade as it cuts. If the material closes around the blade, it can bind and contribute to kickback. Both a splitter and a riving knife are intended to help keep that kerf open behind the blade.
| Feature | Splitter or spreader | Riving knife |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | Commonly fixed relative to the table or guard; the actual design varies by saw. | Mounted close behind the blade and moves with the blade assembly. |
| Height | May extend above the blade, often as part of a guard assembly; geometry varies. | Stays below the top of the blade, as described by SawStop. |
| Cut compatibility | A fixed or taller component and its guard configuration can constrain some cuts. | Its lower profile can allow use for some non-through cuts or cuts where a guard cannot be used, if the saw manual permits. |
| Fit and alignment | Must suit the saw and blade arrangement. | Must match the saw and blade kerf and be aligned as the manufacturer specifies. |
Names are not always used consistently: manufacturers may call related components a splitter, spreader, or riving knife. Identify the part by its construction and your saw’s manual, not by the label alone. Neither option is universally safer or better; use the component designed for your saw and the operation.
What the riving knife’s movement changes
Because a riving knife follows the blade assembly, it remains close behind the blade as blade height or angle changes. Its lower profile can also preserve use for some cuts where a blade guard does not fit. SawStop describes that use for its products, but it is not a blanket rule for every saw: check the manual for your model and cut.

A SawStop jobsite-saw manual directs users to use the riving knife when the blade guard cannot be used, while specifying that neither the guard nor the knife can be used for dado cuts. Those instructions are model-specific. Do not assume another manufacturer’s saw has the same exceptions or setup.
Alignment, blade kerf, and replacement fit
A splitter or riving knife must be appropriate for the blade and aligned as the saw maker specifies. For its Professional Cabinet Saw family, SawStop’s February 2024 manual says the component should be parallel to the blade and within the width of the kerf. It gives an approximately 4–8 mm gap between the component’s front edge and the blade teeth and describes a quick-release clamp under the table behind the blade. These are instructions for that documented saw family, not universal adjustment dimensions. See the SawStop Professional Cabinet Saw manual.

- Ultra high safety performance: n695948 table saw riving knife is an important safety accessory for desktop saws. Its design purpose is to prevent dangerous situations such as recoil, workpiece being clamped and violently thrown backwards towards the operator.
- N695948 is made of sturdy and durable materials with a precise design. The blade is smooth and sharp, which not only improves our work efficiency, but also firmly installs on the throat plate of the table saw. The saw blade rises from behind to keep the cut open and prevent wood adhesion.
- Unique design: The riveting blade is exquisitely crafted and designed as a thin cut blade, making it suitable for replacing small table saws blade. The n695948 table saw driving knife is used to replace the cutting blade, providing a smooth and safe cutting experience.
- Purpose: Designed to directly replace worn or damaged cutting blades on compatible desktop saws, compatible with specific model DWE7485, and able to achieve perfect fit, helping us prevent recoil and improve safety when operating desktop saws.
- Easy to use: N695948; Driving knife # dwb-n695948 has very strict material requirements and fully complies with OEM factory standards. It is identical to the original rivet blade that comes with the saw, and its replacement steps are very simple. Novice carpenters can also complete the installation independently.
Do not assume a generic replacement will fit. SawStop lists a 0.090-inch (2.3 mm) riving knife/splitter thickness for specified models, and its guard-assembly information explains that particular guard and splitter configurations require matching parts. That thickness and those configurations do not establish compatibility with other saws.
- Identify the saw’s exact make and model.
- Check the current owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s parts listing for the correct knife, splitter, or guard assembly.
- Confirm the blade kerf and the component’s specified thickness and alignment requirements.
- Search for “table saw riving knife replacement” together with the saw’s make and model; confirm the part against the manufacturer’s documentation before fitting it.
Safety requirements and exceptions
Use the blade guard, riving knife, splitter, and anti-kickback devices in the combination your saw manual specifies. OSHA enforcement records describe workers exposed to table-saw kickback hazards when a riving knife or spreader was absent during rip cutting; one record cites keeping the riving knife, anti-kickback pawls, and blade guard in place and following the manual as a feasible abatement method. This is an enforcement example, not a quantified estimate of risk reduction.

A separate OSHA enforcement record quotes the hand-fed circular ripsaw requirements in 29 CFR 1910.213(c)(2): the spreader must be thinner than the saw kerf and sufficiently rigid. That provision does not require a spreader during grooving, dadoing, or rabbeting, and says it is to be replaced afterward. It is workplace regulation language in a particular regulatory context, not general consumer setup advice; consult applicable rules and your saw manual. OSHA’s sawmill regulation also defines a splitter as a “knife-type, nonrotating spreader,” a definition scoped to 29 CFR 1910.265 rather than all consumer table saws.
