Clean exterior windows by choosing a safe way to reach them, clearing loose grit, washing with a window-compatible mild solution, removing the liquid with a squeegee or lint-free cloth, and checking for streaks. Use a telescoping pole or safe inside access where possible; if you would need to overreach or climb unsafely, stop and call a qualified window cleaner.
1. Check the window and plan safe access
Before wetting the glass, identify the window type and check its manufacturer’s care instructions. Some glass has low-maintenance exterior coatings that need special care, and a cleaner or tool that works on ordinary glass may not be suitable for it.
Choose a method that keeps you on safe footing. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises avoiding work at height where reasonably practicable, including by using a telescopic water-fed pole or cleaning from inside. Its guidance is written for UK workplace safety, but the access principle is useful for household planning too: do not improvise a risky reach. - Ground-level reach: A telescoping pole with a suitable scrubber or water-fed attachment can help keep you off a ladder.
- Inside access: If the window is designed to open or tilt inward, clean the exterior only if you can do so from a stable, safe position and follow the window maker’s instructions.
- Difficult access: Stop if the task requires leaning out, overreaching, or using unstable equipment. Specialist access may be necessary.
2. Remove loose dirt before washing
Use a soft, dry cloth or soft brush to lift away dust, cobwebs, and loose debris. Washing over grit can drag it across the glass and may scratch the surface. Andersen recommends clearing loose debris before treating heavier grime. Andersen’s glass-cleaning guidance

3. Wash with a mild solution that suits the glass
Apply mild soapy water or a window cleaner specifically approved for your window, using a soft cloth or brush. Follow the care directions for the exact glass and frame; coatings and finishes vary, so there is no universally safe cleaner for every installation.
For Andersen products, the manufacturer warns that some low-maintenance exterior coatings can be damaged by hard or abrasive objects, and its care guidance advises against abrasive materials and metal blades for relevant products. Do not assume vinegar, ammonia, razor blades, abrasives, or pressure washing are safe for your windows unless the manufacturer explicitly permits them. 4. Remove the solution cleanly
Clear the wet glass with a squeegee or a clean, lint-free cloth. Work in manageable sections and keep the squeegee edge or cloth clean; a dirty tool can redeposit grime. Dry the glass and frame separately so water or residue from the frame does not run back across the finished pane. Check the pane for missed edges, spots, or streaks, then touch up with a clean soft cloth if needed. When possible, avoid cleaning in direct sunlight: the solution can dry too quickly and leave marks. Use only enough detergent to clean the glass; excess cleaning agent can leave a film. Leave the work area and any equipment stable and dry. If you cannot finish without unsafe climbing or overreaching, stop rather than trying to reach one last spot.
