Keep grease, hazardous chemicals, medicines, wipes and clogging solids out of household drains. These are common wastewater and plumbing precautions—not verified advice from interviews with plumbers. Local disposal options vary, so check your municipality’s current instructions for waste that needs special handling.

Why these items belong somewhere other than the drain

Some materials build up or snag in pipes; others can add hazardous substances to wastewater. A sink drain, toilet and sewer system are not disposal routes for every liquid or solid. The right alternative depends on the material and local waste services.

Grease and cooking oils

1. Fats, oils and grease

Cooking grease can cool, stick to pipe walls and accumulate, restricting wastewater flow and contributing to blockages, backups or spills. Do not rely on hot water or detergent to make grease safe to pour down the drain. Riverside Public Works and North Brunswick Township explain the buildup risk in their drain guidance and sewer-system guidance.

Let grease cool, collect it in a container, and follow local instructions for disposal. Wipe greasy cookware before washing it. Municipal recommendations differ, so use your local authority’s directions rather than assuming one disposal route works everywhere.

2. Cooking oil and pan drippings

Oil may be liquid when it goes into the sink, but it still belongs with fats and oils—not down the drain. Charlotte Water advises residents to let waste oil cool, then collect and store it for recycling or disposal where available: FlowFree Charlotte Water. Check your local waste service for accepted options.

Hazardous liquids and medicines

3. Paint, solvents and paint remover

Keep paint and products such as solvents and paint remover out of sinks and toilets. These materials can be hazardous, and their disposal requirements depend on local household hazardous-waste services and product instructions. Check your municipality’s guidance before disposing of them; do not assume they can be poured into a drain or that another city’s disposal route applies where you live. See Concord’s pipe-protection guidance and Fargo’s drain dos and don’ts.

4. Motor oil, automotive fluids and antifreeze

Do not pour motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze or similar automotive liquids into a drain. Use local collection or recycling services intended for these wastes. Riverside lists automotive fluids among items to keep out of drains, and North Brunswick also identifies them in its sewer-system guidance.

5. Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other hazardous chemicals

Keep pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and other hazardous chemicals out of drains. Follow the product label and your local hazardous-waste program for disposal instructions; the correct route is not necessarily the same in every municipality. Guidance from Riverside and Palo Alto includes hazardous materials among items residents should not send down the drain.

6. Medications

Do not flush unwanted medicines or pour them down the sink. Look for an authorized medicine drop box or collection program, and check current local or applicable regulator instructions for the available option. North Brunswick recommends medicine collection points in its pipe and sewer guidance; disposal advice should not be treated as universal when collection rules vary.

Wipes and other clogging solids

7. Wipes, including “flushable” wipes

Put wipes in the trash according to local waste rules, even when packaging calls them “flushable.” That label does not guarantee that wipes break down like toilet paper in a sewer system, and wipes can contribute to clogs. See Concord’s guidance and Portland’s flushability advice.

8. Paper towels, tissues and hygiene products

Flush only toilet paper and human waste. Paper towels, facial tissues, diapers, pads, tampons and similar products can contribute to blockages; put them in the trash under local waste rules. Municipal guidance from Riverside and Fairfax County lists these items among materials not to flush.

9. Food scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, hair, dental floss and kitty litter

These solids and fibrous materials can collect in plumbing and contribute to clogs. Scrape food debris into the trash or compost it where accepted instead of washing it into the sink. A basket strainer can catch food scraps before they enter the drain; Palo Alto recommends one in its resident guidance. It does not make grease, chemicals, medicines, wipes or other prohibited items safe for the drain.
