You can make a custom Feather-format board either by designing a complete microcontroller mainboard or by building a FeatherWing add-on for an existing board. “Feather” here means following Adafruit’s physical and electrical conventions, not a universally governed standard. A mainboard must provide its own microcontroller support, USB, power regulation, reset, and—if it is to meet Adafruit’s core expectations—LiPo charging. A Wing uses an existing Feather’s interfaces and must stay within that board’s pin and power limits.
Choose a mainboard or a FeatherWing
Decide what you are making before choosing components: these are different electrical projects even when they share the same outline.
Custom mainboard
A mainboard contains the microcontroller or module and the supporting circuits needed to operate it. You design its USB data and upload/debug path, reset, regulated 3.3V supply, and power arrangement. Adafruit’s Feather specification also describes onboard LiPo charging and a JST 2-PH battery connector arrangement as part of its core expectations. Confirm the current specification and the selected chip and charger documentation before fixing the design.
FeatherWing add-on
A Wing adds a function to an existing Feather, such as a sensor interface or other peripheral. It ordinarily relies on the host board for the microcontroller, USB, regulation, and battery charging. Its job is to connect to the host’s pins and use available power without exceeding the board’s capabilities. Do not duplicate mainboard circuitry unless the add-on has a specific, independently designed power or interface function.

Start with the Feather-compatible outline
The classic Feather/Wing outline is 0.9 × 2.0 inches, with 0.1-inch hole spacing. Adafruit’s overview and specification describe the familiar arrangement of connectors and aligned pins. If your goal is to fit existing Feather-oriented breakouts or accessories, preserve the USB-side geometry, USB connector position, battery connector arrangement, and pin alignment. Making a mainboard wider can interfere with breakout fit. Check the actual mechanical drawings for your chosen connectors and enclosure; nominal footprint names do not guarantee physical clearance.
For prototyping spacing, 0.1-inch header strips can help check placement, but choose male, female, or stacking headers to match the intended assembly. A physical Feather board can also serve as a form-factor reference; it is not a required component of the custom design.

- SUPER STRONG EXPANSION SLOT HOLD: Includes a heavy-duty 3/4" miter bar that expands rapidly for an ironclad, slip-free grip inside standard U- and T-shaped miter slots, adjusted effortlessly via comfortable ergonomic knobs.
- DUAL 6-INCH EXTENDED TRAVEL SLOTS: Our featherboards for table saw are equipped with two 1-1/2" T-bolts (5/16"-18 thread) that fit 1/4" to 3/4" T-tracks. Deliver maximum horizontal adjustability across a variety of woodworking machinery setups.
Map pins to the chosen microcontroller
Feather boards use 3.3V logic. Adafruit’s official Feather Specification, last edited March 8, 2024, states: “All Feathers and Featherwings use 3.3V logic – so do not make anything that requires 5.0V logic.” See Adafruit’s Feather specification. A 5V peripheral therefore needs an appropriate interface or level conversion rather than a direct assumption of compatibility.
The Feather positions for UART, I2C, and SPI are fixed conventions, but the underlying microcontroller pin capabilities are not identical across every board. Before routing, consult the selected MCU’s datasheet and reference design. Check pin multiplexing, boot and debug requirements, and whether the pins you want are available for the intended peripherals. Analog inputs and general-purpose I/O need particular attention because their capabilities depend on the MCU and board implementation.

- Provides consistent tension and maximum holding pressure created by unique split rail construction
- 5/8 in. and 3/4 in. metal miter bars, that fit all standard miter slots (2 each)
- 1/4 in. t-slot bolts fit most table saws, router tables and band saws
- Dual slide motion - Side to side and forward action for quick and easy setup
- Dual Slide Motion-side to side and forward action for quick and easy setup
The ESP8266 example in Adafruit’s specification is notably constrained. Do not assume a Wing that uses several general-purpose pins will work with every Feather; verify the actual host board and required signals.
Plan USB, battery, and regulated power
For a mainboard, define the power path before laying out the board: what supplies power, how the MCU receives regulated 3.3V, how USB data reaches the MCU or USB-to-serial interface, and how reset and charging behave. Select regulator and charging components from their datasheets and check the chosen battery’s specifications. The Feather conventions are not a substitute for component limits or a battery-safety design.

- ONE-HANDED QUICK ADJUSTMENT: The patented spiral design features a single pivot knob for lightning-fast setups. Simply drop it into the miter slot, push against the wood, and tighten—saving you time and frustration compared to traditional dual-knob featherboards
- MAXIMIZE SAFETY & PREVENT KICKBACK: Maintain continuous, even pressure against the fence for cleaner, more precise cuts. The engineered polymer body absorbs vibration and stops wood from reversing, keeping your fingers safely away from the blade
- UNIVERSAL 3/4" MITER SLOT FIT: Includes a premium aluminum expanding miter bar that locks securely into any standard 3/4-inch wide by 3/8-inch deep miter slot. (Note: Please measure your slot before purchase; does not fit 5/8-inch slots)
- MULTI-TOOL VERSATILITY: The reversible design works effortlessly for both left-side and right-side feed operations. It is the perfect shop accessory for ripping boards on a table saw, resawing lumber on a bandsaw, or routing edge profiles on a router table
- SHOP-TOUGH DURABILITY: Built to withstand the demands of both professional carpenters and hobbyist makers. The impact-resistant polymer body provides optimal flex and memory, consistently outperforming and outlasting brittle plastic alternatives
USB VBUS and battery VBAT are not interchangeable guarantees. Their behavior can differ by implementation, and either may disappear when USB or the battery is disconnected. A Wing powered from one of these supplies should tolerate its removal and should not assume that the host board keeps that rail available in every operating condition. A battery is not necessary for ordinary USB-powered operation unless your design specifically requires it.
For a Wing, document which host-board rails it uses and the add-on’s expected current draw. Check the host board’s documentation and test with the intended Feather. The sources do not establish a universal current budget applicable to all boards.

Use reference designs without assuming they transfer
Adafruit publishes EagleCAD schematic and board-layout files for its Feather RP2040, as well as a more feature-rich RP2040 USB Host board. These can help you study how a real design groups circuits, places connectors, selects footprints, and routes signals:
Inspect the exact files and their licenses before copying, modifying, or redistributing them. A reference board is not proof that a modified layout, different MCU, alternate component, or new manufacturing run will work. The reviewed examples are RP2040 designs, not universal templates.
Design, manufacture, and bring up the board
- Choose the chip and architecture. For a mainboard, select the exact MCU or module and obtain its official datasheet and reference design. Compare native USB with a USB-to-serial bridge, available GPIO and peripherals, bootloader and toolchain support, radio needs, power requirements, board area, and component availability. No single MCU or bill of materials is established as universally suitable.
- Draw the mechanical layout. Begin with the outline and pin positions, then place USB, battery, and other connectors to suit the intended accessories and enclosure. Check footprints against component mechanical drawings and leave room for mating plugs and assembly.
- Complete the schematic and pin map. Account for power, reset, USB, charging if included, and each signal’s MCU constraints. Label the connector pins clearly so the actual board can be checked against the schematic.
- Run design-rule and fabrication checks. Review the board outline, drill data, copper layers, clearances, and outputs against the current requirements of the board fabricator you choose. Adafruit’s surfaced 2019 Eagle/OSH Park tutorial result does not establish current fabrication rules or detailed manufacturing steps.
- Inspect before applying power. Check component orientation, connector polarity, solder joints, and possible shorts. Measure the supply rails and, for a mainboard with charging, check charging behavior against the component and battery specifications.
- Validate the assembled revision. Verify USB enumeration and upload, reset and boot behavior, pin mapping, and representative peripherals. Test the actual mainboard and Wing combination, including its power behavior and GPIO use; compatibility is not automatic.
What compatibility does—and does not—mean
Following the Feather conventions makes interoperability more likely, but it does not establish that every Feather, Wing, and software stack will work together. Adafruit describes compatibility expectations in relation to products it tests. The actual result depends on the host board’s implementation, available pins, power behavior, physical clearances, and software support. Check those details for the particular combination rather than treating the Feather name as a guarantee.
