The six common light-bulb categories are incandescent, halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL), linear fluorescent, LED, and high-intensity discharge (HID). They are not six wholly separate technologies: halogen is a kind of incandescent lamp, and CFL is a compact fluorescent format. For most replacement decisions, start with the fixture and the light you need—not the old bulb’s wattage alone. Match the base and shape, compare brightness in lumens, choose a color temperature in kelvins, and confirm compatibility with dimmers and other controls.

How the six bulb types differ

These categories describe familiar lamp technologies and formats, not a simple ranking from best to worst. Energy use, light distribution, color options, fit, and control compatibility vary by product. A bulb that suits one fixture or task may be a poor fit for another.

Type How it produces light What to consider
Incandescent Heats a filament until it glows. Familiar warm-looking light; much of the input energy becomes heat. Choose a replacement by required lumens rather than matching watts alone.
Halogen A type of incandescent lamp. Check the product label and fixture instructions for fit and compatibility; color appearance varies by product.
Compact fluorescent (CFL) A fluorescent lamp folded or coiled into a compact form. Current through gas in the tube produces ultraviolet light, which a phosphor coating converts to visible light. Available in different color appearances. Dimming, three-way sockets, and electronic controls may require specifically compatible CFLs.
Linear fluorescent A fluorescent lamp in a tube format, commonly used with a dedicated fixture. Check the existing tube type and ballast or driver compatibility before replacing it or changing formats. Follow the lamp and fixture manufacturers’ instructions.
LED A light-emitting diode uses a microchip; the product also needs thermal management. LEDs are directional, so the bulb’s optics and diffuser affect how widely light spreads. Drivers and heat sinks can make some bulbs larger near the base.
High-intensity discharge (HID) A broad lamp category distinct from the household formats above. Specific applications and replacement advice depend on the lamp and ballast; consult the equipment manufacturer rather than assuming a household bulb is interchangeable.

Incandescent and halogen

Both produce light by heating a filament; halogen is an incandescent subtype, not a separate light-generation principle. A U.S. Department of Energy historical article gives 15 lumens per watt for 60–100-watt incandescent lamps as historical context, not a current market survey. ENERGY STAR’s older CFL guide gives 3,000 K as a typical halogen color temperature. For a replacement, use the needed lumen output and verify the lamp’s physical and control requirements.

CFL and linear fluorescent

CFLs package a fluorescent tube into a compact shape, often a spiral or folded tube. Fluorescent lamps can offer different color appearances; older ENERGY STAR guidance describes warm or soft white, cool or bright white, and daylight options. Product designs and availability vary, so use the package and fixture instructions for current compatibility rather than assuming every CFL can dim or work with a three-way socket or electronic control.

Linear fluorescent tubes are associated with dedicated fixtures. Replacing a tube is not necessarily the same as substituting a different lamp format: the tube type and ballast or driver can matter. The fixture or lamp manufacturer’s instructions are the right reference before changing formats.

LED

LED products are widely used in household lighting, but the label still matters. The diode’s directional light means the bulb’s optical design affects how evenly it illuminates a space. Integrated drivers or heat sinks can also make a replacement bulb too large for a tight fixture, particularly near the base.

LED useful life is commonly described through projected lumen depreciation: ENERGY STAR explains that output tends to dim gradually, rather than ending only when a filament burns out. Do not treat any one lifespan figure as universal; check the product’s own specification and the conditions attached to it. ENERGY STAR says LEDs can produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs; that is a general comparison, not a promise about every pair of products.

HID

HID is a useful category to recognize, but the specific lamp, ballast, and equipment determine what can be used as a replacement. Do not choose an HID lamp for a particular room or application based on the category name alone; use the fixture or equipment manufacturer’s requirements.

Choose brightness by lumens, not watts

Watts measure electrical power; lumens measure light output. As ENERGY STAR puts it, “Brightness is a description of light output, which is measured in lumens (not watts).” A familiar “60 watt replacement” label is a quick equivalence cue, but the lumen figure is the useful comparison when choosing actual brightness.

Traditional incandescent reference ENERGY STAR minimum light output DOE LED comparison
40 watts 450 lumens not stated (DOE comparison is for 800 lumens)
60 watts 800 lumens 5.9–10.5 watts for general-purpose A-type E26 LED products under DOE’s stated assumptions
75 watts 1,100 lumens not stated (DOE comparison is for 800 lumens)
100 watts 1,600 lumens not stated (DOE comparison is for 800 lumens)

The incandescent-reference lumen figures are ENERGY STAR’s minimum equivalences; the DOE watt range is specifically its comparison for general-purpose A-type E26 products, not a universal wattage for all LED bulbs. Read the package’s actual lumen and watt figures rather than treating replacement wording as a guarantee of identical performance.

Choose color appearance by kelvins

Correlated color temperature (CCT), measured in kelvins (K), describes whether light looks warmer or cooler; it is not a measure of brightness. Lower numbers appear warmer or yellower, while higher numbers appear cooler, whiter, or bluer.

Color temperature Typical description or setting in DOE guidance
2,700 K Warm; common examples include homes, libraries, and restaurants.
3,000 K Soft; examples include homes, lobbies, and restaurants. ENERGY STAR’s older CFL guidance groups 2,700–3,000 K as warm.
3,500 K Neutral; examples include executive offices and reception areas.
4,100 K Cool; examples include offices, classrooms, and showrooms. Older ENERGY STAR CFL guidance groups 3,500–4,100 K as bright or cool white.
5,000–6,500 K Daylight range in older ENERGY STAR CFL guidance.

These settings are examples rather than room rules. ENERGY STAR’s older CFL guide suggests bright white for kitchens and daylight for reading or work spaces, but the right appearance depends on the task, existing lighting, and personal preference. Labels such as “soft white 60” or “warm light 60” combine a color cue with an incandescent-equivalent shorthand; check the kelvin and lumen numbers to know what the bulb actually specifies.

Check the fixture and controls before buying

  1. Match the bulb to the fixture. Check the base, bulb shape, physical dimensions and clearance, voltage, and any fixture-specific requirements. Confirm that the bulb is rated for an enclosed fixture if it will be used in one. DOE notes that some LED bulbs can be too large for smaller fixtures.
  2. Set the required light output. Use lumens to match the brightness you need. If replacing an incandescent, use the equivalent label as a starting point and compare the actual lumen figure.
  3. Choose the desired color appearance. Compare the CCT in kelvins, not just marketing terms such as warm, soft, or daylight.
  4. Verify the controls. Check the bulb package and fixture instructions for dimmer, three-way socket, and electronic-control compatibility. Do not assume a bulb will work correctly with a control just because its base fits.
  5. Consider light spread and heat. For LEDs, check that the bulb’s design provides the distribution the fixture needs and that it fits with room for any required thermal management.
  6. For fluorescent fixtures, verify the system. Match tube type and confirm ballast or driver requirements before changing a linear lamp or switching to a different format.

For a general-purpose LED replacement, compare the base, shape, lumens, CCT, enclosure rating, and dimmer compatibility against the fixture and task. A familiar A19 shape is not enough on its own if the base, clearance, light spread, or controls do not match.
