The black diamonds on some tape measures mark 19.2-inch intervals, a layout aid for spacing certain engineered joists or floor trusses. They are not extra measurement units and do not mean every framing member should be installed 19.2 inches apart.
What the black diamonds mark
STANLEY says the diamonds on its marked tape blades indicate a point every 19.2 inches. The interval comes from dividing the 96-inch width of a standard 4-by-8-foot sheet into five equal bays: 96 ÷ 5 = 19.2. The marks can help a builder lay out framing to align with those bays.
STANLEY describes the marks as guides for engineered joists. West Fraser gives a more specific example: floor trusses spaced to support a 4-by-8-foot tongue-and-groove subfloor panel rated for a 20-inch on-center span. That example applies to the panel and truss system it describes, not to every floor product or framing design.
How 19.2-inch spacing differs from 16-inch spacing
The diamonds are separate from the familiar 16-inch framing marks found on many tape measures. Across 96 inches, the two intervals divide the sheet width into different numbers of bays:

| Layout interval | Bays across 96 inches | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 16 inches | 6 | Common framing layout; the Fine Homebuilding explanation compares it with the wider layout. |
| 19.2 inches | 5 | Layout aid for some engineered joists or floor trusses, as described by STANLEY and West Fraser. |
The arithmetic describes layout across a sheet; it is not, by itself, a structural recommendation. Fine Homebuilding notes that wider spacing affects allowable spans for joists and rafters and advises consulting an engineer or architect before changing a 16-inch layout. Follow the project plans and the specifications for the framing and sheathing being used.
Using the marks—and when to ignore them
For ordinary measuring, use the numbered inches and smaller graduations on the blade. The diamonds are simply a quick reference when a project calls for the 19.2-inch layout. If your plans specify 16 inches on center, the tape’s diamonds are not a reason to change that spacing.

- Integrated finger brake: For improved blade control
- Fractional blade graphics for quick and easy measuring
- Durable blade coating for longer blade life
Some tapes may show a nearby fractional marking such as 19 3/16 inches. That is a practical approximation, not an exact conversion of 19.2 inches: 19.2 inches equals 19 1/5 inches. STANLEY’s stated interval is 19.2 inches, and printed markings can vary by tape.

If you want these layout references on the blade, STANLEY’s model 30-455 product page lists both 16-inch and 19.2-inch stud-center markings on its 25-foot tape. A tape with the diamonds is optional; the marks explain a particular framing layout, not a requirement for general measuring.
