If the nest is out of the way, leaving it undisturbed may be safest. For an accessible outdoor nest, do-it-yourself treatment is an option only if the exact pesticide label covers that pest and location. Hire a licensed local pest-management professional for nests in walls, high or hard-to-reach places, or near people and pets.
First decide whether the nest needs to go
Wasps and hornets can nest in the ground, shrubs or trees, under eaves, in sheds, and inside wall voids. A nest does not automatically need removal: if people and pets can avoid it and it is not creating a meaningful exposure risk, leaving it alone avoids provoking the insects and preserves their ecological roles, including preying on other insects and pollination. The University of Maryland Extension explains nest locations, benefits, and disturbance risks in Social Wasps: Yellowjackets, Hornets, and Paper Wasps.
- Leave it undisturbed if it is away from routine activity and can be safely avoided. Keep people and pets away; do not strike the nest, mow beneath it, or reach near it.
- Consider treatment or removal if the nest is in a place people or pets regularly use, or avoidance is not practical.
Choose an approach based on location and exposure
| Situation | Safer approach |
|---|---|
| Nest is outdoors, accessible, and away from routine activity | Leave it alone if it can be avoided; otherwise consider only a pesticide whose current label covers that pest and use site. |
| Nest is high, concealed, in a wall void, or near people or pets | Contact a licensed local pest-management professional. University of Maryland Extension recommends professional help for difficult nests; Oregon State University Extension discusses nests near places people or pets use in How do I get rid of a yellowjacket nest without harming my garden? |
Never reach blindly into a hole or crevice. Do not treat sealing an occupied wall-void opening as a generic fix; a concealed nest is a case for a professional.
When DIY pesticide treatment may be appropriate
Use a pesticide only when the label on the exact product you have covers both the target insect and the specific site. Labels are product-specific instructions, not interchangeable recipes. Read and follow every direction, including precautions for people, pets, and surrounding areas.

For example, an EPA-registered product label for one wasp, hornet, and yellowjacket killer, dated June 1, 2026, directs users to treat when insect activity is minimal, stand a safe distance from the nest and not directly underneath it, and wait at least 24 hours before removing the nest. The label states: “Wait at least 24 hours before removing the nest.” These directions apply to that product and scenario only; follow the label on your own product. See the EPA label for EPA Registration 101563-324.
If you cannot follow the product label safely, or the nest is not clearly accessible from outdoors, do not attempt treatment yourself. Ask a licensed local pest-management professional to assess it.

Prevent encounters around the home
Integrated pest management includes reducing access to the food, water, and shelter pests need. The CDC outlines this approach in What Is Integrated Pest Management?
- Keep outdoor food and waste managed rather than exposed.
- Reduce standing or accessible water and shelter opportunities where practical.
- Watch for nests around areas people use, and avoid disturbing them.
What to do if wasps attack or someone is stung
If several insects are attacking
Move away quickly and get indoors if possible. Do not stop to swat at the insects. The CDC / National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health gives prevention and response guidance in Insects and Scorpions at Work.
