The right refrigerator size is the one that fits the kitchen opening, opens without hitting nearby surfaces, can be installed with the manufacturer’s required clearances, and can reach the kitchen by the delivery route. Measure the opening and route before choosing a model, then compare those measurements with that exact refrigerator’s specifications and installation guide.
What refrigerator sizes are common?
There is no universal refrigerator size. As a general U.S. guide, Whirlpool lists common refrigerators at about 24–40 inches wide, 61–72 inches tall, and 28–37 inches deep; depth can reach about 45 inches with the door fully open. These ranges describe the market broadly, not a guaranteed fit for any particular model. Whirlpool’s refrigerator dimensions guide explains that dimensions vary by model.
Use a model’s exterior dimensions—not its capacity—to decide whether it will fit. Capacity, usually stated in cubic feet, describes interior volume; a larger-capacity model is not necessarily wider or deeper in a predictable way.
How to measure the refrigerator opening
Use a measuring tape and write down the usable height, width, and depth. Measure the actual space where the refrigerator will sit, not just the nominal cabinet or appliance opening. GE Appliances’ guidance is direct: “Measure the space where you want to place the refrigerator.” GE Appliances’ refrigerator size guide also calls attention to ventilation, hinge clearance, door opening, and delivery access.
#1 Best Overall
- Center brake to hold blade
- Diameter scale on backside of tape
- Magnetic back
- Country of Origin:China
- Package weight:0.3 lb
- Height: Measure from the finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction. Check more than one point if the floor or cabinetry is uneven. Account for projecting trim and the model’s hinge height when comparing the measurement with its specifications.
- Width: Measure between the cabinets, counter, or walls at more than one height. Note baseboards, trim, and irregular surfaces that reduce the usable opening.
- Depth: Measure from the back wall to the counter edge or other front limit. Compare that with the model’s stated case depth, door depth, and handle depth; manufacturers may present these separately.
- Room to operate: Mark where the doors, drawers, and handles will extend when used. Check the swing against a side wall, cabinets, an island, and nearby walkways.
Do not assume that a refrigerator listed as a certain depth will sit flush with the counters or that its doors will open fully within the same footprint. Samsung’s refrigerator sizing guide advises checking the specific model’s dimensions and considering doors and compartments in the open position.
Allow for ventilation and door clearance
A refrigerator can fit inside an opening and still lack the space it needs around the sides, top, or back. It may also need additional room at the hinge side for doors or drawers to open. The required gaps are model-specific: use the installation guide for the refrigerator you are considering rather than applying one manufacturer’s clearance number to another brand.

- OUTSIDE DIAMETER TAPE MEASURE - Pocket-sized, flexible, and retractable steel tape measure with both diameter (OD measurement) and standard integer measurements.
- MEASURE AROUND ANYTHING - Standard, consecutive inches on top-side to 1/16 inches; diameter measurements on underside to 1/100th inches. Perfect for measuring trees, branches, or pipe fitting.
- EASY READ TAPE MEASURE - Includes inches and metric measurements down to millimeters on both sides; High contrast, easy to read numbers.
- MAGNETIC, REFLECTIVE AND RETRACTABLE TAPE MEASURE Reflective, aluminum rotating wheel brake allows for high visibility and effortless retract control. Strong magnet on case for affixing to metal objects.
Before deciding that a model fits, compare its installation requirements with your measured opening and check whether a wall or cabinet beside it limits the hinge movement. Bosch’s refrigerator buying guide covers installation type and cutout dimensions, while Maytag’s dimensions guide notes that dimensions vary by model. Together, these are reasons to verify the actual product documents rather than rely on a general clearance rule.
Check the whole delivery route
The kitchen opening is only the final part of the fit check. Measure every doorway, hallway, stair, and turn between the delivery entrance and the refrigerator location. Include obstructions such as handrails and protruding trim, and consider whether the appliance can be maneuvered around corners.

- Built in stainless steel bottle opener to enjoy a job well done
- CONVENIENCE: Built in magnet allows for easy storage on a refrigerator or metal toolbox
- LENGTH: 9-ft Long for Use on Standard Lengths of Building Materials
- ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold ensures a firm grip at all times
- Includes (1) 9-ft Pocket Tape Measure
Ask the retailer or delivery provider what delivery configuration they require. If removing refrigerator doors is being considered, rely on the model’s official instructions and the provider’s requirements; there is no single delivery rule that applies to every refrigerator. LG’s measurement guide emphasizes accounting for uneven floors, trim, and route access.

Compare refrigerators by installation type, exterior dimensions, opening footprint, capacity, and how your household stores food. A freestanding model and a built-in model may have different installation requirements, including different cutout needs. For a tight location beside a wall, French-door or side-by-side layouts may be worth considering, but the door geometry and clearance requirements still need to be checked for the exact model.

- AUTOMATIC LOCK - Self locking mechanism allows blade to lock automatically and retract at the push of a button.
- NYLON COATED BLADE - Provides maximum blade protection.
- IMPACT RESISTENT CASE - ABS plastic with rubber over mold protects the case from accidental drops.
- STUD MARKINGS - Printed every 16 inches.
- HIGH CARBON STEEL - Provides the most durable blade and retraction spring.
Use this checklist when comparing models:
- Installation type and any required cutout dimensions.
- Exterior width, height, and depth, including doors and handles where stated.
- Required ventilation gaps and hinge-side clearance.
- Door swing, drawer extension, and clearance from an island or walkway.
- Measurements along the complete delivery route.
- Interior capacity and whether the layout suits your storage habits.
Capacity can help compare usable interior space, but it cannot establish exterior fit. Whirlpool describes capacity in cubic feet as interior volume and gives this calculation: interior length × width × depth in inches, divided by 1,728. Its example, 24 × 70 × 24 inches, works out to about 23.3 cubic feet. That is an illustrative calculation; actual usable capacity and manufacturer measurement conventions may differ. Whirlpool’s guide provides the formula and example.
