The Arts and Crafts Mission Sofa and Chair Woodworking Plan is one project plan for a mission-style sofa and a matching chair, with a bonus no-sew cushion-upholstery project. It is listed in downloadable and paper formats, but lumber and other build materials are not included. The key fit checks are the finished dimensions, your shop’s capabilities, and the full plan’s materials list.
What the Arts and Crafts Mission plan covers
WOOD Magazine’s plan listing describes a mission-style sofa and says the same plans can be used to make a matching chair by shortening some parts. It also lists a bonus no-sew upholstery project for making the cushions. The project first appeared in WOOD Issue 129, December 2000; the publisher page was updated January 16, 2024.
For readers researching mission sofa woodworking plans or how to build a mission style sofa and chair, note that this is a plan listing rather than a full build guide. The publisher and retailer summaries establish the project scope, but they do not provide enough detail to reproduce its complete cut list or construction specifications.
Finished dimensions and room fit
| Piece | Listed finished dimensions |
|---|---|
| Sofa | 83-3/4 inches long × 37 inches wide × 30 inches tall |
| Chair | 41-3/4 inches long × 37 inches wide × 30 inches tall |
Woodcraft’s listing repeats these dimensions. Check the drawings in the plan for orientation and measuring conventions before laying out a room or planning stock. Compare the listed footprint with doorways, access routes, and the intended placement; the dimensions alone do not establish clearance for moving the finished pieces.

Paper or downloadable copy?
Retail listings distinguish paper plans from downloadable copies. WOOD Store and Woodcraft list a downloadable version; Woodcraft and WoodworkersWorkshop also describe paper options. Check the selected listing for the format, included drawings and instructions, current price, and availability, since retailer listings can change.
Materials, tools, and what to verify before buying
Materials are not included with either format, according to Woodcraft’s listing. WoodworkersWorkshop says its plan includes building instructions, finishing guidance, and a full materials and supplies list, but that description is a retailer summary; verify the contents of the copy you purchase.
Rank #2
WoodworkersWorkshop names oak as the wood used in its example while noting that other wood choices are possible. Its summary lists a table saw, clamps, plunge router, band saw, router, drill, planer, and common hand tools. Treat this as a general indication of shop needs, not a definitive equipment checklist: the full plan should guide decisions about wood species, quantities, hardware, upholstery supplies, and tools.
