Seven Household Devices to Check for Standby Power—and How to Measure the Difference

Some devices draw power while off but plugged in. Measure standby loads, estimate possible savings using your own electricity rate, and disconnect only what can safely lose power.

Unplugging devices can reduce electricity use when they draw power in standby, but there is no verified bill saving for the seven unnamed devices in this headline. The practical starting point is to identify what still draws power when it appears off, measure those loads, and disconnect only equipment that does not need to stay ready.

What “off” means—and when unplugging helps

The U.S. Department of Energy defines standby power as the lowest power a device uses while it remains connected to mains power. A device can therefore consume electricity while it appears switched off. Standby may also keep useful features available, such as remote readiness or a display, so cutting the power is a convenience trade-off as well as an energy decision. See DOE’s renter energy-saving guidance and its technical explanation of measuring standby power.

There is no defensible universal list of seven biggest household standby loads here: the devices behind the headline were not identified, and loads vary by product and power state. Rather than assume a device is wasting a substantial amount, check its off or standby draw.

How to estimate energy and cost avoided

For a stable load, record the device’s watts in the state you plan to disconnect. If consumption fluctuates, DOE’s summary of IEC 62301 measurement practice says to measure over time and divide energy by the measurement period to calculate average power. A single instant reading may not represent a changing load.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
  1. Measure the relevant state. Use a suitable plug-in electricity usage monitor if you want to check an individual plug-in device. Measure it while it is in the off or standby state of interest.
  2. Allow for variation. For fluctuating consumption, measure over a representative period and use average watts rather than treating one moment as typical.
  3. Estimate energy. Multiply average watts by the hours the device would be disconnected, then divide by 1,000 to estimate kilowatt-hours avoided.
  4. Estimate cost. Multiply that estimated kWh by your applicable electricity rate. This is an estimate, not proof of a bill reduction; the actual bill depends on measured use and the rates and billing period that apply to you.

A meter can help identify loads, but it does not by itself establish what your bill changed by. To demonstrate a personal bill result, compare relevant bill data across periods and account for the devices, hours, rates, and other changes involved.

Choose a safe, low-friction way to disconnect devices

Switched power strip

A switched strip can disconnect several electronics with one switch, making it useful when a group is normally used together. DOE and ENERGY STAR recommend power strips as a central shutoff point for equipment that need not remain powered. Before switching the group off, check that none of its devices needs continuous power, network availability, clock retention, charging, or scheduled operation. ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance says to use a power strip as a central “turn off” point when finished with equipment: Low- to No-Cost Tips for Saving Energy at Home.

Upgraded Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Energy Monitor 8 Display Modes
  • Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
  • Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
  • Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
  • Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings

Smart plug

A smart plug controls an individual outlet and may offer schedules or remote switching. DOE includes smart plugs among options in its renter guidance. Check the connected device’s instructions and the plug’s load rating and features, and consider whether the control device itself adds standby consumption. ENERGY STAR’s SHEMS criteria discuss plug-load monitors and controls, including smart plugs and strips, within qualifying system packages; that does not mean every standalone plug or strip is ENERGY STAR certified.

Put broad household estimates in context

DOE’s home-energy quiz attributes to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory an estimate that a typical American home has 40 products constantly drawing power, together accounting for almost 10% of residential electricity use. The quiz page does not state a publication year for the claim, and the underlying original publication was not verified here, so it should not be read as a current measurement of a particular home: DOE’s Home Energy IQ quiz.

A different figure is easy to misread: ENERGY STAR attributes to the Consumer Technology Association an estimate that 3.4 billion consumer electronic devices used about 143 TWh in 2017, roughly 10% of residential-sector electricity consumption. That is total consumer-electronics use, not standby consumption: ENERGY STAR’s home energy tips.

DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program says federal agencies must purchase products with standby power at or below 1 watt when compliant models are available. That is a federal procurement requirement, not a household rule or consumer-product label: DOE FEMP’s low-standby-power guidance.
