The best trimmer line for a STIHL is the line that fits your exact trimmer and cutting head, then suits the vegetation you need to cut. Check the approved diameter and length in the trimmer manual or the head’s instruction card before choosing a profile. STIHL describes Premium Round as a multipurpose option, but no single line is right for every STIHL setup.
Start with fit: identify your trimmer and cutting head
STIHL says to consult the instruction manual for the line diameters approved for your model. Its replacement guide also warns that not all STIHL line works with every STIHL head. For the exact diameter and line length, check the instruction card for your cutting head, then confirm the trimmer’s manual or STIHL’s compatibility guidance. The STIHL cutting-head chart lists model-and-head combinations and standard or optional line diameters; STIHL advises consulting the manual or an authorized dealer to confirm approved combinations.
Because the trimmer model and head are not specified here, a universal diameter would be misleading. STIHL lists Premium Round in .095 inch (2.4 mm), among other sizes, but that is one product variant—not a recommendation for every trimmer. Its product page shows .095-inch versions with thread lengths of 14, 41, 83, 253 and 420 meters; check the particular package variant before buying.
Choose a profile for the work
STIHL describes nine types of trimmer line in its product family. These are manufacturer use descriptions, not results from an independent head-to-head test. After confirming fit, use the intended application as a guide:

A separate Premium Round product listing gives .095 inch (2.4 mm) and multiple thread-length variants. Do not infer compatibility from a profile description or a size listing: the manual and head instructions determine whether a size fits your equipment.
Use this quick selection order
- Find the head and model. Read the trimmer model identification and identify the installed cutting head.
- Verify diameter and length. Use the head instruction card and trimmer manual; consult STIHL’s chart or an authorized dealer if the approved combination is unclear.
- Match the profile to the task. Consider round line for general-purpose trimming, or a shaped profile when its stated use better matches dense or resistant vegetation. Consider Quiet Line when noise is a concern, if it is approved for your setup.
- Check the package variant. Confirm the diameter and thread length printed on the specific product before purchase.
Replace line according to the head’s instructions
STIHL’s replacement guide says to switch off and clean the trimmer before maintenance, then identify the correct replacement line. Follow the instruction card for the installed head: STIHL provides separate loading guidance for AutoCut, AutoCut C (EasySpool), FixCut and TrimCut. Do not assume that winding or loading instructions for one head apply to another.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
STIHL’s product pages and chart establish its stated applications, product sizes and compatibility guidance. They do not establish through independent comparative testing that one profile cuts better than another in every condition, or that a claimed feature has a particular measured effect. Treat descriptions such as reduced wind noise or resistance to fraying as manufacturer claims, not quantified test results.
